Bristow in Second in UNLV Invite First Day

LAS VEGAS ? Junior Cathryn Bristow led the No. 49-ranked University of Oregon women’s golf team Monday in first-round action in the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational, held at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in nearby Boulder City, Nev.
Bristow was tied for second with a 3-under 69, and freshman Kendra Little also ranked top 15 (14th-tied, 72). Sophomore Felicia Eastick (39th-tie, 75) and freshman Erica Omlid (45th-tie, 76) rounded out UO’s scoring, and Oregon’s other entrant was sophomore Kate Hildahl (65th-tie, 78).
From the second through 10th holes, Bristow carded eight pars and two birdies, then had four more birdies on four of the final seven holes. Overall, her birdies came on the third, ninth, 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th holes; her bogeys were on the first, 11th and 14th holes; and she shot par on the nine other holes (second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 15th and 17th holes).
As a squad, the Ducks shot a season best four-over 292 and were only eight strokes out of the lead.
The host, No. 54 UNLV, led the 18-team field with a four-under 284, and was followed by No. 55 Washington State (second, 285) and No. 51 San Francisco (third, 291).
Oregon was tied in fourth place with No. 48 Texas Tech (fourth-tie, 292), and was followed closely by No. 35 BYU and No. 52 Washington (sixth-tie, 293), No. 43 Indiana (eighth, 295), No. 57 UC Davis (ninth, 296) and Campbell and Idaho (10th-tie, 297).
Other teams in the field included Sacramento State (12th, 299), Fresno State (13th, 301), Colorado State (14th, 304), New Mexico State (15th, 305), Kansas State (16th, 311), Long Beach State (17th, 321) and Eastern Washington (18th, 322).
On the individual front, Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima owned a one-stroke advantage over Bristow atop the leader board with her four-under 68, while San Francisco’s Christina Stockton, and the Washington State pair of Diana Hong and Tracy Broders were tied for second place. Three others were tied for sixth place with a two-under 70.
Looking ahead, the Ducks return for second round action Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. and final round action follows Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
