SCALING THE RANKINGS
Despite having its six-game winning streak snapped at home last Tuesday during a 14-9 loss to then seventh-ranked North Carolina, the Ducks jumped up to No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse Division I Top-20 Media Poll released on Monday. It is the highest ranking for Oregon in its four-year history. The Ducks, now 7-2 on the season, are joined by conference foe Stanford in the poll as the Cardinal (6-2) is ranked at No. 14.
SERIES HISTORY
Johns Hopkins and Oregon have met just two times previously, with the Blue Jays winning both meetings. This is the second time in the series that the two have met in a neutral site. JHU and Oregon played the first ever varsity lacrosse game in Hawaii in 2006. The two met in Baltimore last season.
JOHNS HOPKINS TIDBITS
Johns Hopkins is hitting the road for the first time in nearly a month to take on Oregon in San Diego, Calif. The Blue Jays last game was a 16-8 loss to second-ranked Maryland. Seniors Lauren Schwarzmann and Kirby Houck, along with sophomore Sam Schrum combined for six goals in the defeat on Monday.
Johns Hopkins enters this weekend with a 2-4 record, led by Houck’s 12 goals and one assist. Sam Schrum also had 13 points with 10 goals and three assists.
NATIONAL ATTENTION
With a 7-2 record and No. 12 national ranking, Oregon is beginning to garner some national attention and exposure. Currently the Ducks have one of the more explosive offenses in the nation, as Oregon ranks ninth nationally in scoring, totaling 157 points (114 goals, 43 assists) this season.
Denver, an MPSF opponent of Oregon, currently leads the nation with 186 points (122 goals, 64 assists.)
TEAM LEADER
A major reason Oregon’s offense has so many opportunities is junior Ilsa van den Berg. Currently leading the team in scoring with 23 goals and six assists, her 29 total points this season ties for 22nd in the nation.
Those numbers rank fourth in the MPSF, behind Denver’s Steph Coyne (48 points), UC Davis’ Katie McMahon (35 points) and Denver’s Megan Carver (30 points). Coyne’s 19 goals and 29 assists lead the nation, while McMahon falls at 13th and Carver 21st.
FINDING BALANCE
Oregon’s offensive attack has been so successful this season because of the numerous options on the field for the Ducks.
Ilsa van den Berg is the only player to score a goal in every game this season, but seniors Jana Bradley and Jen May, as well as freshman Alex Breiner, have each either recorded a goal or an assist in each of the Ducks’ nine games.
THE ROOKIES
Freshman Alex Breiner is having a substantial rookie season for Oregon. The Alexandria, Va., native, is third on the squad in goals scored this year. She has put 14 in the back of the net for the Ducks, while adding two assists for a total of 16 points. Breiner has played in all nine games for Oregon this year, penetrating the starting lineup for Oregon’s last two games.
Anna Swicklik has also made a fine first impression, providing four goals and six assists early on. The Baltimore, Md., native has played in eight games and has made seven starts.
LOOKING AHEAD
While 2008 isn’t even underway yet, the Ducks inked 16 signees for the 2009 class in November. The new class will usher in the second era of Oregon lacrosse, as this year’s senior class departs after playing four years since the inaugural 2005 season. The class has representatives from seven different states, led by Maryland (4) and California (4).
“We are thrilled to welcome this dynamic group of student athletes into our program and anxious to continue building on our solid foundation for the Oregon lacrosse program” head coach Jen Larsen said. “This class brings in a wealth of experience from all across the country and will continue our quest to national excellence on the field and in the classroom.”
