Dunn Upsets #1 Seed in Pac-10 Day 1

EUGENE - UO redshirt junior Ryan Dunn thrilled the McArthur Court home crowd Sunday night with a 6-2 win at 133 pounds to cap first-day action in the Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Championships.
The fourth-seeded native of Estacada, Ore., took a 2-1 lead over Cal State Fullerton's T.J. Dillashaw with a takedown with only six seconds remaining in the scond period, then added two more takedowns in the final 20 seconds of the third and final period to win 6-2 over his junior foe ranked 15th nationally this week.
Earlier in the day, Dunn opened with a 6-4 win over Borislav Novachokov of Cal Poly.
Others Ducks that advanced to Monday afternoon action with a chance to advance to the third-place match included redshirt junior Cody Moulton (141), sophomores Kyle Bounds (157) and Zack Frazier (165) and redshirt freshman heavyweight Charlie Alexander (285).
Moulton, the No. 8 seed from Redmond, Ore., lost his opener to the nation's top-ranked wrestler, senior Chad Mendes of Cal Poly, then scored a comeback 12-8 win over fifth-seeded junior Heinrich Barnes of OSU. Moulton overcame an 8-3 deficit with a minute remaining in the second period, thanks to a takedown and two- and three-point near-falls in the final 25 seconds for a 12-8 decision over his Beaver rival who won their match-up two weeks prior, 9-5.
Bounds, the No. 4 seed from Vancouver, Wash., posted a 4-1 win in his opener over the fifth seed, freshman Devan Velasquez of Fullerton, then lost to top seed and No. 13-nationally ranked sophomore Chase Pami of Cal Poly, 8-1. Bounds will next face Oregon State's Tim Patrick Monday afternoon.
Fifth-seeded Frazier began the day with a fall at 3:46 over fourth-seeded senior Daniel Atondo of Bakersfield. The Gresham, Ore., native Frazier followed with an 8-3 loss to ASU senior and returning league champion Patrick Pitsch. Frazier will next face seventh-seeded freshman Teddy Bristol of Fullerton Monday afternoon.
Alexander, the No. 3 seed from Central Point, Ore., posted a 9-5 win in his opener over sixth-seeded freshman Ricardo Alcala, then lost to OSU senior Travis Gardner, 4-0. Alexander's next foe Monday afternoon is Quinton Pruett of Arizona State who opened the consolation bracket earlier Sunday with a 7-5 win over No. 4 seed Kurt Klimek of Fullerton.
Two other UO wrestlers - redshirt senior Joey Lucas (125) and redshirt sophomore Ron Lee (174) - will wrestle in seventh-place matches Monday afternoon.
Lucas, the No. 6 seed from Hillsboro, Ore., lost his opener by major decision to third-seeded junior Brandon Zoeteway of Bakersfield, 14-0, then lost his next match to seventh-seed Jake Gonzalez of OSU, 3-2. Lucas returns for his final collegiate match Monday in the seventh-place contest vs. Allen Bartelli of Boise State.
Lee opened the day with a 4-2 win over Arizona State junior Rick Renzi, then lost his next two matches to third-seeded junior Tyler Bernacchi of UC Davis, 2-0, and and second-seeded junior Luke Feist of Stanford, 8-5. His final opponent of the tourney Monday afternoon is Oregon State freshman Christopher Platt.
Other Ducks that wrestled Sunday but lost both of their matches were redshirt senior Elliott Tracy (141) and redshirt juniors Jeremy McLaughlin (184) and Shaun Dee (197). McLaughlin, fifth in last year's Pac-10 Championships at 149 pounds, had wrestled at that same weight much of the season, before he moved up 35 pounds to 184 Sunday to fill the team's absence at that weight.
Overall in the team race, Boise State continues to lead with 128 points, ahead of Arizona State (second, 94), Oregon State (third, 83 1/2), Cal Poly (fourth, 79), Cal State Bakersfield (fifth, 77 1/2), Stanford (sixth, 75), Cal State Fullerton (seventh, 72), UC Davis (eighth, 66 1/2), Oregon (ninth, 55 1/2) and Portland State (10th, 17).

Looking ahead, Monday's Third Session starts at 3 pm with the consolation semifinal matches. Fifth- and seventh-place matches follow from 4:30-6 p.m., followed by an intermission from 6-7 p.m. Championship and third-place matches will be held from 7-9 p.m.
After this weekend’s league finale, the top three finishers from the 10 weight classes (30) and eight more wild cards will earn bids to the NCAA Championships, March 20-22 in St. Louis, Mo. More NCAA meet information is available at the www.ncaasports.com website.
