The last time the Oregon and UCLA men’s track & field programs squared off
in a traditional dual meet was one-year after the Ducks last won the NCAA men’s
national outdoor championship. Following a 22-year hiatus, the pair of
traditional collegiate track icons will collide head-to-head for the first time
since 1985.
Oregon’s Associate Athletics Director and Director of Track
& Field Vin Lananna released the schedule for the meet, which will get
underway at 12:30
p.m. Saturday, April 19.
The compact slate will
conclude with the start of the 4x400 relay at 2:50 p.m.
The Bruins dominated the
proceedings in the early going en route to accumulating a 10-4 series
advantage, before Oregon claimed victories in the team-scoring meet with four
consecutive triumphs from 1978-1984. UCLA redeemed itself with a 100-63 victory
in the latest reunion in 1985.
Oregon will take this weekend off from competition but moved
into the national team rankings this week for the first time this year, joining
the Top-25 at No. 16. UCLA is ranked third in the country.
The Ducks’ women are ranked
sixth in the country and will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., next week.
Oregon senior Phil Alexander
(Keizer) has run the second-fastest collegiate 200 meters in the country thus
far, posting a mark of 20.74, while sophomore Ashton Eaton (Bend) ranks third
nationally in the decathlon with 7,792 points.
On the women’s side, sophomore
Nicole Blood (Simi
Valley, Calif.) owns the nation’s second-best 5,000-meter mark (16:16.58),
while junior Rachel Yurkovich (Newberg) is second in the javelin (183-11).
