Oregon Continues Play At Pac-10 Championships
OJAI, Calif. ? The Oregon men’s tennis team continued its competition at the Pac-10 Championships on Friday, focusing on doubles play.
In the Men’s Doubles Championship bracket, Oregon’s top team of Alex Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco advanced to the quarterfinals after an 8-1 victory over Ted J. Kelly and Blake Muller of Stanford. The sophomores’ run ended short of the semifinals, as Cornelissen and Verdasco lost 8-4 to TJ Bellama and Matt Brooklyn of Arizona State, the bracket’s No. 2 seed.
Also in the championship bracket, the team of Geoff Embry and Romeo Mortera fell 8-3 in the Round of 16 to Cal’s Geoffrey Chizever and Pedro Zerbini. The Bears’ duo was the No. 4 seed in the bracket.
In the Doubles Invitational bracket, Oregon’s team of Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert are the only Ducks remaining after two wins on Friday afternoon. The tandem first defeated Washington’s team of Bradley E. Bator and David Chu, 8-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. Gallardo and Wiechert moved onto the semifinals after the No. 1 seeded team from USC, Andrew E. Piotrowski and Jaak Poldma, was disqualified.
Gallardo and Wiechert are set to face the bracket’s No. 3 seed, Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarav of California, at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
Freshmen Duncan MacDonal-Korth and Doug Mayeda also participated in the Invitational, bracket, falling 8-4 to Martin Kidahl and Tobi Obenaus of Washington, the bracket’s No. 4 seed.
