Five Ducks Tapped for Pac-10 Softball Honors

EUGENE ? Five University of Oregon softball players were honored by the Pacific-10 Conference to all-conference teams in an announcement by Commissioner Tom Hansen.
Sophomore Neena Bryant was honored to the All-Pac-10 Second Team, and seniors Lovena Chaput, Alicia Cook and Joanna Gail and junior Sari-Jane Jenkins were tabbed as honorable mention choices.
The Placentia, Calif., native Bryant was one of the Pac-10’s top threats at the plate and ranked top 10 in four main Pac-10 offensive categories this week - stolen bases (fifth, 22), RBIs (sixth, 45), hits (eighth, 62) and total bases (eighth, 102). On the season, the team’s MVP and centerfielder paces Oregon in batting average (.337), hits (62), slugging (.554), RBIs (45), home runs (10), total bases (102) and multiple hit games (16), and ranks top three in on-base pct. (second, .361), runs (second, 27), doubles (second, 10) and stolen bases (third, 22).
Chaput, the team’s recent defensive MVP honoree, also ranked third offensively for UO this season in doubles (8), total bases (57), RBIs (26) and fourth in batting (.277), hits (46) and home runs (6). Those numbers helped the shortstop from Tualatin, Ore., climb various UO top-10 career lists in doubles (third, 36), triples (seventh, 7), home runs (eighth, 22) and RBIs (10th, 94).
Gail had career best numbers in homers (7), RBIs (27) and doubles (11) this season. That latter total for the third baseman from Poway, Calif., is a team best in ’08 and only one shy of UO’s 10th-best mark ever (12) ? a four-way tie that includes Chaput’s tally from 2006.
Cook recently claimed the team’s top pitcher award after she staked all five of UO’s Pac-10 wins vs. four different national caliber squads. She paced the team in wins (16), ERA (2.22), shutouts (5), saves (4) and strikeouts (15). The Elmira, Ore,. native is also well represented on UO’s career lists, including fourth-place rankings in wins (55), strikeouts (426) and shutouts (20).
Jenkins broke UO’s career steals record (77) the past month, and her 29 swipes this season ranks second in the Pac-10 in ’08 and fifth all-time in a season for UO. The left fielder from Salem, Ore., also has a team-best 32 walks this year and ranks sixth in the Pac-10 and fifth all-time for UO. Career-wise, her 108 runs ranks ninth all-time for the Ducks, and her 182 career hits is three away from the 10th-best all-time mark (185).
Going back to past All-Pac-10 teams, Chaput was also an All-Pac-10 Second Team choice in 2005, Jenkins was one of three second-team picks last year, and Gail was an honorable mention in ?07.
Looking ahead to this weekend, the Ducks (33-27, 5-16) make their 14th postseason appearance in school history. The Ducks take on No. 10 seed Oklahoma (55-8, 14-4) on the Sooners’ Marita Hynes Field Friday in the teams’ opening games of the NCAA Tournament.
