Four Ducks Receive All-MPSF Honors

WOODLAND, Calif. ? The 2008 all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women’s Lacrosse team was announced by the league on Friday, after being voted on the MPSF’s six coaches.
Oregon had three players; Alicia Burkhart, Jen May, and Ilsa van den Berg, named to the 17-member team. In addition, freshman Alex Breiner was named one of three MPSF Newcomers of the Year.
This is the second year in a row that Burkhart has received the honor. A junior midfielder for the Ducks, Burkhart has started all 20 games this season. The native of Eldersburg, Md., is second on the team with 35 ground balls, while also winning 26 draw controls (third on the team) and causing 16 turnovers. With three seasons under her belt, Burkhart’s mark of 97 draw controls ranks second all-time. She has also totaled 112 ground balls (third all-time) and 57 caused turnovers (third all-time).
May becomes the first and only player in Oregon history to be named to the MPSF all-conference team each of her four seasons. This year, May has pieced together one of her best efforts yet, with 37 goals and 14 assists. She also has led the team in three categories: ground balls (48), draw controls (51) and caused turnovers (31).
The Reisterstown, Md., native, will end her career at Oregon at the top of five career statistical categories; points (185), goals (126), ground balls (162), draw controls (209), and caused turnovers (142).
Van den Berg put together a record-breaking season in 2008, setting single-season records for goals (46) and points (64). This is the second consecutive season that van den Berg has received the all-conference nod, after leading Oregon in points for 2007 and 2008. This season, van den Berg has totaled 14 multiple-goal scoring games, including scoring a point in all 20 games this year.
Breiner shares her 2008 MPSF Newcomer of the Year award with Denver midfielder Tulley Stapp and Stanford midfielder Karen Nesbitt. Breiner, mostly used off the bench this season, was one of only two underclassmen on the Oregon roster to play in every single game of 2008. The native of Alexandria, Va., has scored 22 goals during her freshman season, along with five assists, 27 draw controls and 12 ground balls. May is the only other player in Oregon lacrosse history (2005) to earn the honor.
Denver senior defender Kelly O’Connell was named the MPSF player of the Year, while Cal’s Theresa Sherry was named Coach of the Year in her first season with the Bears.
Denver and Stanford each had five players named to the team, followed by Oregon (3), Cal (3) and UC Davis (1).
