Oregon Receives No. 16 Seed to NCAA Men?s Golf West Regional

EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon men’s golf team is headed to the postseason for the second straight season.
The Ducks received the No. 16 seed to the NCAA West Regional, which will be contested May 15-17 at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash. The top 10 teams from the 54-hole West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-31 in West Lafayette, Ind.
"It’s a very good seed and a very good situation for a young team like Oregon that plays three freshmen," said head coach Casey Martin. "We’ve done a lot of work to get here and now the guys have the chance to relax and let it fly and see where that takes us."
Overall, this is Oregon’s 14th bid to the NCAA West Regional and second straight. The Ducks qualified for seven consecutive regionals from 1997 through 2003. Oregon has advanced out of the regional to the NCAA Championships four times, most recently in 2003.
The Ducks were one of eight Pac-10 teams to receive a bid to the West Regional. USC was the top seed in the West and No. 2 overall.
The Trojans were followed by UCLA, Florida State, Stanford, Clemson, Nevada-Las Vegas, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Central Florida and Pac-10 champion Arizona State to round out the top 10.
The next 10 seeds were San Diego State, Texas, Louisiana State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Oregon California, Saint Mary’s, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
The final seven teams included in the field were host Washington, Oklahoma, Kansas State, San Diego, Denver, Navy and Columbia.
Oregon will be paired with California and Saint Mary’s for the first two rounds.
Last year, the Ducks finished 19th at the NCAA West Regional played in Tempe, Ariz. Joey Benedetti was Oregon’s high finisher, tying for 62nd at 213. The Ducks’ other senior, Derek Sipe, tied for 86th in last year’s regional at 217.
Along with Benedetti and Sipe, Oregon is expected to compete freshmen Jack Dukeminier, Sean Maekawa and Isaiah Telles.
