EUGENE ? The Duck softball team (32-24, 4-13) makes a final push for the postseason this weekend with its final four games of the regular season at home. UO first faces 10-time national champion UCLA, then takes on Northwest rival and No. 24 Washington in a doubleheader Friday and a single Fox Sports Northwest-televised game Saturday.
On Sunday night, Oregon will then tune into the NCAA selection show at 7 p.m. on ESPN-U. UO has made postseason appearances four of the past five years under sixth-year head coach Kathy Arendsen and has advanced to the regional final each of those trips.
Last weekend, the Ducks went 3-2 with wins over then-No. 22 California (4-1), OSU (2-1) and Portland State (8-4), and losses to then-No. 8 Stanford (6-0) and then-No. 22 Cal (6-1).
QUICK QUACKS
Senior pitcher Alicia Cook hurled two Pac-10 complete game wins last week with her 4-1 victory over then-No. 22 California and 2-1 decision vs. Oregon State ? the former of which came three days after being hit by a fly ball that forced her eye swollen shut. ... Sophomore centerfielder Neena Bryant continues to rank top 10 in four Pac-10 offensive categories this week - stolen bases (fourth-tie, 19), hits (seventh, 59), RBIs (seventh-tie, 42) and total bases (ninth, 96) . ... Freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett’s 33 steals still paces the Pac-10 and ranks fourth all-time in a season for UO. She’s one of three Ducks ranked top five in Pac-10 steals in ’08 with Sari-Jane Jenkins (second, 28) and Bryant (fourth-tie, 19).. ... Jenkins, the school career stolen base owner (76), scored three runs last week and now has 108 in her career to rank ninth for UO, and she had two doubles and three walks in that span. ... Last week, senior shortstop Lovena Chaput’s 21st career home run put her ninth all-time for UO and her 7 RBIs put her 10th career-wise (89).

SENIOR DAY
Before Saturday’s season finale, a special on-field recognition will honor Oregon’s senior class ? shortstop Lovena Chaput, pitcher Alicia Cook, third baseman Joanna Gail, right fielder Kayleen Hudson, catcher Amie Morris and manager R.J. Matagora.
IN A LEAGUE OF HER OWN
Head Coach Kathy Arendsen became the first Duck skipper to stake 200 wins at the end of February in Las Vegas. The week before, the sixth-year head coach became the all-time wins leader among Duck softball coaches after she passed Tami Brown (192-172, 1990-96). Arendsen’s career winning percentage (.611, 215-137) is also a school best, ahead of Teresa Wilson’s mark (.548, 126-104, 1986-89). The 18th-year collegiate coach Arendsen sports a 587-412 overall record after prior stops at Mississippi State, Yale, Eastern Illinois and Western Connecticut.
LAST WEEK’S LEADERS
In UO’s five games in Oregon last week, senior shortstop Lovena Chaput hit at a .455 clip (5-for-11, 1 run, 1 double 1 home run, 7 RBI) and had a two-RBI single and an RBI double in UO’s split with No. 22 Cal, and her fifth home run of the season vs. PSU. Others that batted .270 or better included sophomore first baseman Carlyn Re (.400, 4-for-10, 2 runs), junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins (.333, 5-for-15, 3 runs, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 4 walks), sophomore right fielder Blair Williamson (.333, 2-for-6, 3 runs) and freshman catcher Ashley Kivett (.273, 3-for-11, 1 run, 1 double, 3 walks).
MORE BATTING NOTES
Three weeks ago, junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins broke the school stolen bases record, and her 76 career swipes moved her past former teammate and current undergraduate assistant coach Suzie Barnes (second, 72). This week, Jenkins ranks second in the Pac-10 in ’08 in stolen bases (28), third in triples (2) and ninth in walks (28). In the 17 conference games this season, she tops UO in hits (12), stolen bases (8), walks (12) and on-base percentage (.431) and ranks second in batting (.267) among starters.
On the season, sophomore centerfielder Neena Bryant paces Oregon in batting average (.341), hits (59), doubles (10), slugging (.555), RBI's (42), home runs (9), total bases (96), and ranks top three in on-base pct. (second, .363), runs (second, 26) and stolen bases (third, 21). She had a 10-game hitting streak broken last weekend, and her season-long streak (11) came in the final weeks of the non-conference slate in March. She also had an eight-game streak the opening month of the season.
Freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett has led the Pac-10 in steals all season (33), and her 55 hits stands second for UO this year. Her 33 thefts rank fourth all-time in a season for UO and ninth all-time on the career charts and one behind eighth (34). The Yucaipa, Calif., native had a 15-game hitting streak ended in the Mid-March’s Cascade Clash opener, then proceeded to go 7-for-21 the next three games and hit safely in nine of her next 11 games. Hitting in one of UO’s top two slots in virtually every game, she ranks second for UO in batting average (.314) and third in runs (20). She had a season-high four hits in her first collegiate game (4-for-4) with a double and a stolen base.
Twin sister Ashley Kivett is tied for the Duck during the Pac-10 slate in doubles (2) and home runs (1), and ranks third in RBIs (3) and walks (5) and fourth in hits (7). She hit .273 in last week’s five games (3-for-11, 1 double, 3 walks), and paced the team in batting three weeks ago in the three games vs. Oregon State and Portland State (.600, 3-for-5, 1 RBI).
Altogether, six Ducks have homered this year, and five have four or more. The power parade includes four returnees ? Bryant (9), Joanna Gail (7), Lovena Chaput (5) and Kayleen Hudson (4) ? and two freshmen ? Monique Fuiava (6, including a grand slam) and catcher Ashley Kivett (2). Fuiava hit a dinger vs. then-No. 1 Arizona State the last weekend in April, then was part of back-to-back bashes with Lovena Chaput vs. Portland State ? the third time UO has hit back-to-back homers this year. The Ducks combined for 10 round-trippers in the eight Cascade Clash games in late March, courtesy of Bryant (5), Gail (3), Chaput (1), and Hudson (1), while Kivett added another homer vs. Oregon State to open April. UO’s 10th-best individual season home run mark is 10 ? a mark that Bryant achieved last year as a freshman and is one away from. As a team, UO stood fifth in the Pac-10 this week in homers (33).
This season, Fuiava, Gail and Bryant are the first Ducks to hit multiple homers in a game ? and their pairs of round-trippers are one shy of the school record (3 in a game). Bryant was the most recent honoree with a pair of solo home runs in her 3-for-3 day vs. UC Davis in UO’s 7-2 Cascade Clash win. Gail cleared the fence twice in her 3-for-3 afternoon vs. Cal State Bakersfield earlier in the month at San Diego State. Fuiava’s effort vs. Colorado State the opening weekend included a grand slam, and her 6 RBI’s is a team high in ’08, and only one off the school record (7) that four share. Others on the team with grand slams from prior seasons include Gail (2) and Hudson (2).
Among current Ducks the career home run leader is Chaput (21) who ranks ninth all-time and is one away from eighth (22). Other Ducks with +10 career homers include Bryant (19), Gail (17), Hudson (16) and redshirt Jenn Salling (14).
UO’s 16 hits in its 10-6 win over Southern Utah (3/7/08) broke the school record (15) that UO initially matched in its 3-2 season-opening loss vs. Colorado State.
The Ducks’ 14 RBIs vs. Cal Poly broke the school record (13) that it had staked three times before, the most recent in a game vs. Cal State Northridge in ’06.
Oregon’s seven stolen bases in a 13-2 win vs. Northwestern State (2/15) broke the old mark by one (6) that was performed six times in school history, the most recent being vs. Utah Valley State last year.
Lovena Chaput’s four runs in a 13-2 win vs. Northwestern State tied a team record shared by four others.
Ashley Kivett’s two doubles vs. Cal Poly and Blair Williamson’s pair vs. Arizona State rank second all-time for UO, as did sister Cortney Kivett’s four hits in her debut vs. Colorado State.
Oregon’s 14 runs vs. Colorado State was the second-most under sixth-year head coach Kathy Arendsen (behind last year’s 15-8 win last year vs. College World Series qualifier and then-No. 8 Texas A&M). That 14-run tally was three shy of the school record (17 vs. Rutgers, 17, 1999).

MISC. DUCK NOTES
The Duck defense is fairly new look in '08, even for the returnees. Five players started multiple games the first weekend in the same tournament that didn’t do so in ’07 ? freshmen Monique Fuiava (1B-DP), Ashley (C) and Cortney Kivett (2B), sophomore Carlyn Re (1B) and redshirt senior Kayleen Hudson (RF-DP). Sophomore Blair Williamson (RF) started multiple games in a tournament only once last year, while three of UO’s starters have done so than at different positions than they did in the non-conference slate in ’07 ? Chaput (SS in ?08, LF in ?07), Jenkins (LF in ?08, CF in ’07) and Bryant (CF in ?08, RF in ’07).
Three Ducks have started all 56 games this year ? Bryant (CF), Chaput (SS) and Jenkins (LF). Three others have started at least 54 games - Joanna Gail (3B, 55), Kivett (2B, 54), and Fuiava (DP-1B, 54) ? and the latter has played all 56 including two as a reserve.

ALL-TIME VS. UCLA / WASHINGTON
The Ducks are 12-63 all-time vs. UCLA and 13-39 all-time vs. Washington. UO’s last win vs. UCLA was in 2005, a 3-0 win by Amy Harris at Westwood (5/12), and UO won its final meeting of 2006 vs. UW, 2-1, at home with a win by Melissa Rice (5/7/06). UO won season series vs. Washington in 2004 (2-1) and ’03 (2-1) in Arendsen’s first two seasons in Eugene. Earlier this season, the Ducks lost 2-0 at then-No. 1 UCLA in late March on a two-hit complete game by Melissa Rice, and 12-0, the next day. UO has yet to play UW this season since their season opener was snowed out in Seattle, March 28.
BRUIN BITES
Last week, No. 3 UCLA (43-6, 15-3) went 2-1 at home and split with then-No. 1 Arizona State (5-0 win, 5-2 loss) and beat returning national champion and then-No. Arizona (2-1). Senior pitcher Anjelica Selden entered the season as UCLA’s all-time strikeout leader and was a First-Team All-American in ’06. She was also a Second-Team All-American as a freshman in ’05 and a Women’s College World Series All-Tournament Team pick. Senior outfielder Krista Colburn was a Second-Team All-American last year and an All-Pac-10 and All-Region First Team choice. In 2007, current second-year head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez guided UCLA to a 37-18 record and a third-place tie in the Pac-10 (12-9). She served 13 years prior as a Bruin assistant coach and helped the team win three national championships, and also started as a catcher on three other national championship UCLA squads.

RECENT DUCK RECAPS
5/4 ? Oregon 4, No. 22 California 1, Eugene, Ore.
Senior Alicia Cook made a gritty return from an injury to pitch a two-hit, 4-1 complete game win over No. 22 California Sunday at Howe Field. Cook (15-10) came back from an injury suffered Thursday in practice when a fly ball struck her in the face and left her eye swollen shut for the next day. Besides her black and blue eye, the Elmira, Ore., native showed little effects from the injury in her second Pac-10 victory of the week and fourth in league play this season. She struck out four, walked one, gave up two hits, and her only run allowed was unearned en route to her team-leading 16th complete game of the year. On offense, the Ducks combined on a five-hit, four-run third inning - its biggest run-scoring inning of the Pac-10 slate. In the third inning, UO’s first three hitters - freshman Monique Fuiava and sophomores Carlyn Re and Blair Williamson - led off with singles to load the bases. After junior Sari-Jane Jenkins knocked in the first run on a groundout to first base, freshman Cortney Kivett slapped a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the infield for an RBI single that knocked Cal starter Brittany LaRosa out of the game. Two batters later, senior Lovena Chaput lined a two-out, two-run single down the right field chalk for Oregon’s final two runs.
5/3 ? No. 22 California 6, Oregon 0, Eugene, Ore.
The Ducks accounted for its run in the sixth inning when senior Lovena Chaput knocked in junior Sari-Jane Jenkins on a two-out double to the right center field gap. The Tualatin, Ore., native Chaput’s double was her seventh of the year ? third-most on the team ? and 35th of her career. She stands fourth all-time for UO in the career category, and only one behind the third position. Chaput’s 23rd RBI of the season gives her 91 for her career ? one shy of 10th all-time for UO (92). Other Ducks that collected hits included freshman Ashley Kivett who made her second appearance in the second spot in the batting order (1-for-2, 1 walk), Chaput (1-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 walk) and sophomore Blair Williamson (1-for-1). On the mound, freshman left-hander Brittany Rumfelt (6-4) pitched her seventh complete game this season and fourth in Pac-10 play. She struck out one, walked two, gave up seven hits and six runs ? five of which were earned.
5/2 ? No. 8 Stanford 6, Oregon 0, Eugene, Ore.
After a scoreless first four innings, the Cardinal (43-10, 8-8) scored single unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then added four more runs in the seventh inning. UO junior Sari-Jane Jenkins walked a season-high three times in the lead off spot. Five others hitters hit safely, including the lower four hitters in the lineup who each went 1-for-3 ? senior Joanna Gail, freshman Ashley Kivett, senior Kayleen Hudson and sophomore Carlyn Re. Freshman pinch hitter Katilin Vitek also hit safely in the seventh inning for her third pinch hit of the year. Junior Duck starter Melissa Rice pitched her 10th complete game of the season, and struck out four, walked three, allowed 11 hits, and three of her six runs allowed were earned.
4/30 ? Oregon 8, Portland State 4, Eugene, Ore.
In its first home game in more than three weeks, UO (31-22, 3-11) celebrated two homers in a six-run second inning to help beat Portland State, 8-4. UO scored its first two runs in the first inning before the scoring flood gates opened with a season high six more in the second to force PSU to use three pitchers that inning. The Vikings answered in the top of the second inning with two runs, and added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the first inning, junior Sari-Jane Jenkins led off with an infield single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and fielder’s choice, and scored on a bunt by senior Lovena Chaput that also scored sophomore Neena Bryant from second base after the pitcher’s errant throw to first base. The Ducks sent 10 hitters to the plate in the second inning, and knocked out opposing starter after a three-run homer by Chaput and a solo shot by freshman Monique Fuiava on the next pitch ? the third time this season Ducks have homered in back-to-back at-bats in an inning. Chaput’s fifth round-tripper of the season and 21st of her career helped her tie her season-high in RBIs (4), and also took on greater significance historically. She moved to ninth all-time for UO in career home runs and tied her with former great Katie Mackey. Fuiava’s sixth home run of 2008 and second in four games ranked her third overall on the team behind Bryant (9) and Joanna Gail (7). In the fifth inning, senior Kayleen Hudson almost treated the home crowd to a third homer with her towering double that bounced just in front of the left center field wall. Sophomore Carlyn Re added a double to begin UO’s offensive explosion in the second inning, one of three in a four-batter stretch that was followed by two-baggers by Jenkins and freshman Ashley Kivett. The latter shot was another near-home run and bounced on the left field warning track, approximately 200 feet from home plate. In the leadoff spot, Jenkins (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) had a season high three hits for the fourth time this season. Others that had a part in UO’s 10 hits included Ashley Kivett (1-for-1), Chaput (2-for-3, 4 RBI, 1 run), Fuiava (1-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Hudson (1-for-3) and Re (2-for-3, 1 run). On the mound, Duck starter Brittany Rumfelt (6-3) pitched the first five innings, walked one, struck out none, gave up seven hits, and all three runs allowed were earned. Junior Melissa Rice came in the final two innings and struck out one, walked none, allowed four hits, and her run allowed was earned.
4/29 ? Oregon 2, Oregon State 1, Corvallis, Ore.
Senior Alicia Cook staked her 14th complete game of the season to lift the Ducks over Oregon State, 2-1, at the OSU Softball Complex. The Ducks scored runs in the third and fifth innings, then relied on Cook’s composure to hold off the Beavers in the seventh inning when baserunners reached second and third base with no outs, as she forced a pair of outs to third base and strikeout to end the game. UO’s first run was initiated by a leadoff walk by freshman Ashley Kivett in the third inning. After a fielder’s choice, junior Sari-Jane Jenkins lined her third double of the season down the left field line, and the run came home on the next at-bat on a two-out wild pitch. Oregon’s last run came in the fifth inning after Cook bunted and got on via a throwing error by the pitcher, as did the next hitter junior Blair Williamson on a sacrifice bunt. After OSU threw out the lead runner at home on an infield grounder by Sari-Jane Jenkins, Williamson later scored from third on freshman Cortney Kivett’s chopper and beat the throw home by the pitcher. Ducks that hit safely included Jenkins (2-for-4), Lovena Chaput (1-for-3) and Gail (1-for-3). Williamson scored both of UO’s runs, and two Ducks walked ? junior Neena Bryant and Gail. On the mound for UO, Cook (14-10) struck out six ? two off her season high - walked two, and her run allowed was unearned.

UO SEASON PREVIEW
In 2008, the Ducks seek their fifth postseason trip under sixth-year head coach Kathy Arendsen, buoyed by the memories from an often-magical ’07 season. UO racked up 44 victories ? second most in school history ? and a school record 18-game early season win streak that put the Ducks in the top 10 in the national polls in the opening months of the schedule.
IN THE POLLS
In the national preseason polls, UO held its place among the country’s elite programs with 20th and 23rd ?place rankings in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and USA Softball polls, respectively. Returning national champion Arizona led both rankings and was among seven Pac-10 teams spotted, and their rankings follow: Arizona (1st / 1st ), Arizona State (3rd / 2nd), UCLA (14th / 10th ), Washington (11th / 14th), Stanford (19th / 17th) and Oregon State (18th / 19th).
A RIGOROUS SCHEDULE
The Ducks typically play one of the nation’s tougher schedules, and do so again in ?08 with 37 games against 21 returning NCAA qualifiers from last season. Not surprisingly, those opponents include five regional champions, three World Series participants and both championship participants.
UO’s current RPI rating is 50th nationally ( http://warrennolan.com/softball/2008/rpi ), and especially climbs every week in the conference slate thanks to the quality of the Pac-10 Conference ? the nation’s premier softball league that has combined for 20 of the 26 previous NCAA titles.

TOP DUCK RETURNEES
The Ducks welcome back many of last year’s stars from one of its deepest teams ever (with 2007 stats in ()). Junior outfielder Sari-Jane Jenkins (.396, 82 hits, 27 RBI, 38 SB) and senior third baseman Joanna Gail (.281, Defensive MVP .971) were All-Region Second Team picks. Jenkins’ sophomore season totals in hits (82), stolen bases (38) and doubles (16) ranked second most in school history and her hits and doubles totals ranked third and first in the Pac-10 last year.
In ’07, the Salem, Ore., product Jenkins was also a Pac-10 Second-Team pick, while Gail and sophomore outfielder Neena Bryant (.309, 14 doubles, 10 HR’s, 46 RBI) were honorable mention all-league selections. Bryant led the gold-medal winning U.S. junior national team in batting (,571) last summer in the World Junior Championships, and had several top-10 season all-time marks for UO (see end of release).
Senior shortstop Lovena Chaput was an All-Pac-10 Second Team pick in 2005 and an ASA All-America shortstop two summers ago. Redshirt senior Kayleen Hudson missed last year, and had a career high .293 average in ’06 and ranked second on the team in slugging (.455) and third in on-base (.362) and home runs (4).
Arendsen’s pitching staff returns both of last year’s 20-game winners - senior Alicia Cook (23-5, 10 shutouts, 125 strikeouts) and junior Melissa Rice (21-14, eight shutouts, 114 strikeouts) ? the first duo to notch the feat in school history.
NEW FACES
The Ducks have welcomed six newcomers who have challenged for immediate duty ? freshmen Monique Fuiava (first base), twins Ashley and Cortney Kivett (catcher / second base), Brittany Rumfelt (pitcher) and Kaitlin Vitek (catcher) and junior transfer Shelley Deadmond (outfield). Cortney Kivett has started nearly every game and has replaced All-Pac-10 second baseman Suzie Barnes, and Rumfelt won her first four starts this year. Fuiava has shared duties at first base with sophomore Carlyn Re, and Ashley Kivett and Vitek have stabilized UO’s future behind the plate and have rotated with senior and two-year starter Amie Morris. Deadmond was an all-league honorable mention at Butte Junior College and is one of the team’s top pinch runners and could play any outfield position.
SISTER ACT
Freshman Kivett twins ? Ashley and Cortney ? aren’t the only Ducks with sibling connections. Senior pitcher Alicia Cook is the younger sister of former Duck great Jennie Cook. The elder Cook lettered from 1996-99 and ranks top 10 for UO in games (second, 140), wins (third, 59), complete games (third, 82), innings (fourth, 720). The younger Cook, Alicia, has already passed her sister in shutouts (Alicia, fourth, 19; Jennie, eighth, 9) and strikeouts (Alicia fourth, 416; Jennie eighth, 241), and for comparison here are Alicia’s other career stats and UO all-time rankings: 116 games (#6), 543 innings (#7), 54 wins (#4), 55 complete games (#7) and 19 shutouts (#4).

Fans can call (541) 346-6148 for home game updates that may be rescheduled because of inclimate weather.
ON THE AIR
A broadcast of every home game for the remainder for the season will be also streamed online at the www.GoDucks.com website for O-Zone members. Oregon’s season finale vs. Washington, Saturday, May 10 at noon will be broadcast by Fox Sports Northwest. A pair of conference games in early April vs. then-No. 1 and then-No. 8 Arizona were televised by the Oregon Sports Network on Oregon Comcast Cable systems on Channel 37.
2007 DUCK SEASON REVIEW
The Ducks advanced to the regional final for the fourth time under Arendsen last May after opening round wins in the postseason vs. Penn State (4-0) and South Carolina (8-4), then lost twice afterwards to the host Gamecocks. UO soared through the non-conference stretch and climbed as high as 10th and 11th, respectively, in the national polls thanks to a 24-3 start that included a school record 18-game winning streak. Afterwards, UO continued to fly high en route to a 44-19 record and second-most wins in school history.
Individually, the Ducks amassed a school record seven All-Pac-10 honors, led by NFCA Player of the Year finalist and redshirt sophomore shortstop Jenn Salling. The first-year Duck also nabbed UO’s first Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year award after she ranked second nationally in batting (.481), and added school records in RBI (73), slugging (.873) and walks (46). A pair of then-seniors ? Suzie Barnes and Ann Marie Topps - were tabbed to the Pac-10 All-Second Team. Barnes handily broke season records for stolen bases (41) and runs (64) and Topps crushed 19 home runs, three more than the previous Duck all-time best.
SUMMER FUN
After last year’s record-breaking collegiate season, the Ducks continued to shine on the club, national and international stages. Last August, redshirt sophomore shortstop Jenn Salling started at shortstop and hit in the middle of the Canadian National Team’s lineup in the China Cup in Beijing, China. Afterwards, the Port Coquitlam, B.C. native was selected to Canada’s Olympic Team ? one of the top medal hopefuls this August. Senior Joanna Gail started at third base for the Greek National Team in their Europe-Africa Olympic qualifying tournament as the squad finished tied for fourth and celebrated wins over numerous countries, including the Czech Republic, England and Holland. The Poway, Calif., native made her Olympic debut back in ’04 in Athens before her freshman season. Sophomore Neena Bryant was one of the top hitters on the gold-medal U.S. team at the World Junior Championships last June. The U.S. team was unbeaten (10-0), and the outfielder from Placentia, Calif., led the team in batting (.571) in her nine games and her other offensive numbers follow: 7-for-12, 1 double, 1 triple, 8 RBI, .545 slugging. In the summer season, Gail and Jenkins started for the ASA national champion Brakettes team (Stratford, Conn.), and Jenkins was an All-America choice.
TOP DUCK
Sixth-year UO head coach Kathy Arendsen has directed Oregon to its most successful stretch in school history. She entered the 2008 season ranked first all-time among Duck softball mentors in winning percentage (.612, 183-116), followed by Nancy Plantz (.588, 20-14, 1980) and Teresa Wilson (.548, 126-104, 1986-89). The current Duck mentor now has 214 wins and moved past former all-time leader Brown in early March (192-172, .527, 1990-96).
Arendsen’s first season in ’03 was one of UO’s greatest when the Ducks tied for third in the Pac-10 (37-19, 10-11) and had one more Pac-10 win than the previous three years combined. UO continued to shine with several other of its finest seasons in 2004 (42-21, 10-11) and 2005 (36-25, 7-14), then raised the stakes even higher in ’07 (44-19). UO sprinted out to a 24-3 start thanks to a school-record 18-game win streak and top-10 national ranking, and later reached the regional final for the fourth time in her five seasons.
Prior to her arrival to Eugene, she resurrected the Mississippi State program in 1997 after a 10-year hiatus, and her Bulldogs twice made the regional final. She spent four seasons prior as the head coach at Yale as its winningest coach (90-73), and two seasons at Eastern Illinois (46-36, 1990-91) and one at Western Connecticut (18-10, 1983).
As a player, she initially staked her name as one of the greatest pitchers in collegiate and U.S. history in a career that included 4,038 strikeouts, three Broderick (National Player of the Year) Awards and national titles for Texas Women’s University in 1979 and ’80. Afterwards, she pitched for the Raybestos Brakettes (Stratford, Conn.) and went 338-26, and staked 79 no-hitters, 42 perfect games, 265 shutouts and a 0.15 ERA. After her retirement, the Deerland, Mich., native was elected to the International Softball Hall of Fame, ASA Hall of Fame, Softball Hall of Fame, Cal State Chico Hall of Fame, Texas Women’s University Hall of Fame, Michigan ASA Hall of Fame and Grand Rapids Hall of Fame.
MORE LOVE FOR THE DUCK STAFF
Oregon’s recent success can also be tied to the continuity of one of the nation’s top staffs that includes associate head coach J. Gaudreau, Arendsen’s top assistant the past 14 seasons, and assistant coach Mick Hokanson who returns for his third season in Eugene and 17th overall in the collegiate ranks. The squad also added former pro centerfielder and Nebraska All-American Kim (Ogee) Harris as a volunteer coach just before the start of the season. A pair of All-Pac-10 picks from last year, Suzie Barnes and Ann Marie Topps, will serve as undergraduate coaches this year as they finish their degrees and help expedite the transition for a new class of Duck stars.
