Over 100 University of Oregon student-athletes gave back to the community by participating in Quackin’ Action, an event designed to teach local children the benefits of “being a good Duck.”
The event was held Sunday, June 1st from 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. in the indoor Moshofsky Center and featured an introduction from current University of Oregon Athletic Director, Pat Kilkenny. Volunteers hosted about 250 children from the Springfield elementary area.
Quackin’ Action provided local children the opportunity to meet and greet with University of Oregon student-athletes and participate in a series of fun stations set up around the Moshofsky Center.
Rotating every 20 minutes, the kids learned the five most important ways to “be a good duck,” including stops at fitness, safety, sportsmanship, teamwork and nutrition stations. Each station had a designated student-athlete captain and a team of volunteers to assist him or her. To meet each child’s needs, the elementary school children were divided up into age groups of kindergartners, 1st graders, 2nd & 3rd graders, and 4th & 5th graders.
Matt Jacobsen, a men’s golfer at the University of Oregon, helped reorganize the event this year, “Quackin’ Action has always been a great event. This year, though, we wanted to step it up and do something even better.” Jacobsen collaborated with University administrators to restructure the event. He also secured the involvement of Springfield Fire and Police Departments for the safety station.
Quackin’ Action was free to the invited Springfield Elementary children.
