Verdasco Receives Pac-10 Accolades

EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore Marcos Verdasco received Pacific-10 Men’s Tennis all-conference honorable mention accolades, it was announced Wednesday.
Verdasco was the Ducks’ No. 1 player the majority of the season, finishing with an 8-18 record overall and an 1-6 mark in the Pac-10.
The native of Madrid, Spain, played some of the toughest competition in the Pac-10 and the country, competing against nine ranked players during the 2008 season.
Verdasco earned his first victory of the season over a ranked opponent when he defeated 30th-ranked Harel Srugo of UCLA on March 29.
In doubles action, Verdasco finished with a 13-14 record, again facing some of the stiffest competition in the nation as part of Oregon’s No. 1 doubles team. Verdasco formed a partnership with sophomore Alex Cornelissen, and the duo helped the Ducks win the doubles at Stanford on April 12 with an 9-8 win over the team of Blake Muller and Richard Wire.
Cornelissen and Verdasco also defeated the team of Ted Kelly and Muller in the first round of the Pac-10 Doubles Championship.
Verdasco entered spring 2008 after a successful fall, where he posted a 6-3 record in singles action.
Oregon finished the 2008 season with an 11-14 record. The year included a 5-1 upset of then 63rd-ranked UC Irvine on Feb. 23, as well as disappointing back-to-back, 4-3, losses to No. 27 Washington and No. 59 Denver. Oregon also enjoyed the success of a five-match winning streak that spanned from March 7-24, and included victories over Pacific, Nevada, Portland State, Portland and UC Riverside.
Stanford freshman Alex Clayton received two honors, and was named both the Pac-10 Player and Newcomer of the Year.
USC’s team of Kaes Van’t Hof and Robert Farah was named the Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year, while Arizona State’s Lou Belken was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year.
