Walker's Pace: Rupp Named USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year

Rupp Named USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year
Monday, March 2, 2:30 p.m. PST
It's a good thing Galen Rupp wasn't in a movie in 2008 because he might have swiped the best actor Oscar from Sean Penn.
The latest honor for Rupp came down Monday when the USTFCCCA named him the 2008 Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year. The senior from Portland, Ore., has a 3.91 grade point average in business administration.
For those keeping track at home, here's the impressive list of Rupp's accomplishments related to the 2008 cross country season:
NCAA Individual Champion
USTFCCCA Athlete of the Year
USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete of the Year
NCAA West Regional Individual Champion (second straight)
USTFCCCA West Regional Athlete of the Year
Pac-10 Individual Champion (second career)
Pac-10 Athlete of the Year
Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year
What Rupp has done in a single season would be a remarkable career for most. And then there's that whole "team-player" aspect to consider, too, as he led the Ducks to their second straight Pac-10, regional and NCAA national championships in 2008.
Folks, make your plans now to GET TICKETS and see this guy run one last season in an Oregon uniform while you still can.
Nicole Blood (left) and Alex Kosinski were named to the USTFCCCA all-academic team on Monday.
Kudos should also go out to Nicole Blood and Alexandra Kosinski on the women's team who joined Rupp on the USTFCCCA all-academic team.
Also on a busy Monday, the IAAF announced that the Nike Prefontaine Classic will be part of a prestigious new circuit of elite track meets known as the "IAAF Diamond League", starting in 2010.
No doubt that will be a hot topic at the first "Tuesdays in Track Town" town hall meeting, which will take place tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Bowerman Building. That event is free and open to the public.
