Wilson Named New Assistant Soccer Coach

EUGENE, Ore. -- Head coach Tara Erickson announced recently that Mac Wilson will join the University of Oregon women’s soccer program as an assistant coach. Wilson will oversee the program’s academics and camps, while assisting with day-to-day operations and on-field coaching.
“We are excited to add Mac to our staff,” Erickson said. “I love his ties to the community and local soccer scene.”
Wilson has spent the last 15 years working in the Eugene/Springfield area, serving both as head coach and soccer pioneer.
“This is an incredible opportunity for me to continue developing as a coach,” Wilson said. “Being part of the UO women’s staff (with Tara and Lauren) is the perfect place for me to be.”
Wilson was the founder of the Eugene Metro Futbol Club where he served as both Director of Coaching and as a head coach from 2005-08. Wilson was recognized as the 2006 Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA) Girls Coach of the Year for his work with the U-14 Eugene Metro FC squad.
He has coached in Oregon’s Olympic Development Program for the last five years, working with both boy and girl players from around the state. Wilson, who was a 2008 Region IV ODP staff coach, is currently completing his duties as head coach of the Oregon ’95 girls team.
“He has earned the respect of area club coaches, which is very important in our recruiting efforts,” Erickson said. “His work with regional ODP will help to serve our recruiting needs as well.”
Wilson was head coach of the boys soccer team at Sheldon High School from 1997-2004, where 17 of his former players went on to compete at the NCAA Division I and II levels. In 2002, Wilson led the Fighting Irish to a 4A State Championship en route to earning Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Coach of the Year honors.
As a player, Wilson was a four-year starter (1988-91) at the University of Tampa under legendary coach Tom Fitzgerald. Wilson helped lead the Spartans to four consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament berths, including an Elite Eight appearance as a senior. He graduated from Tampa in 1992 with a degree in business management.
Wilson, a native of Miami Beach, Fla., earned a master’s degree in special education from the University of Oregon in 1995. He and his wife Kerry have two sons, Nic and Bailey. Wilson has a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "A" coaching license.
