PORTLAND
Portland and Oregon are familiar foes with the two teams squaring off earlier this year at the Rose City Invitational. The Pilots (15-11, 1-2 WCC) shut out the Ducks, 4-0, for the first and only time this season back on Mar. 20 at PGE Park. Despite Oregon freshman lefthander Tyler Anderson dealing a season-high 12 strikeouts. Portland’s Scott Burris pitched six innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three base runners on two hits and one walk. The Pilots begin this week after dropping their conference opening series, 2-1, at Saint Mary’s last weekend. Bryant Kraus continues to lead Portland at the plate, batting .389 with 25 RBI and 16 extra-base hits. Lefty Ed Wakefiled is expected to make the start for Portland. He has made 10 appearances this season, pitching a total of 11 and 2/3 innings with an 0-0 record and 3.09 ERA.
STANFORD
In his 33rd second season at the helm of the Stanford baseball program, head coach Mark Marquess is one of two coaches Oregon will face this season that coached against the Ducks before the program was disbanded in 1981. The Cardinal (7-11, 3-3 Pac-10) enter the week with two mid-week games on the schedule before making the trek to Eugene. Stanford dropped its conference-opening series to cross-bay rival California, 2-1, but rebounded with a 2-1 series win over Washington last week at Sunken Diamond. In Pac-10 games, Stanford has improved it average from .254 to .302, led by Jake Schlander (.391).
CIVIL WAR RECAP
Oregon played its first Pac-10 game in 28 years last weekend, hosting in-state rival and two-time College World Series champion Oregon State. The Beavers took game 1, 7-1 at PK Park on Friday, pulling away with four runs in the top of the ninth. The Ducks then evened the series in dramatic fashion the following evening with a 10th-inning 3-2 victory at PGE Park in Portland in front of a Pac-10 record crowd of 15,540. John Adamson belted the first pitch he saw pinch hitting in the 10th over the head of OSU’s right fielder to score Caleb Tommasini for the game winner. Drew Gagnier held OSU scoreless over the final two innings to set up the win, and Oregon starter Erik Stavert pitched 6 and 2/3 innings of one-run baseball to keep the Ducks in the game. The rubber game was decided by Oregon State’s Jorge Reyes on Sunday in front of 13,709 at PGE Park. Reyes tossed seven innings of one-run (unearned) baseball to defeat Oregon, 8-1.
500 AND COUNTING
Oregon’s exhilarating 3-2 comeback victory in the 10th inning over Oregon State last Saturday not only served as the Ducks first Pac-10 victory in 28 years, but was also the 500th Division I victory for head coach George Horton. In his 12th year coaching at the Division I level, Horton is 500-224-1.
WALKING OFF
John Adamson’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th during Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Oregon State was the third game to end in dramatic fashion this season. In addition to Adamson’s game-winner scoring Caleb Tommasini last Saturday, senior Andrew Schmidt’s ninth-inning walk-off single gave the Ducks a historic 1-0 victory over the defending College World Series champion Fresno State Bulldogs on Feb. 27 - to christen PK Park. Freshman KC Serna has the honor of Oregon’s second game-winning hit, coming in the bottom of the 13th inning in a 3-2 victory over Santa Clara on March 8.
SPEEDY TOMMASINI
Entering the week on an eight-game hitting streak, Oregon senior Caleb Tommasini was the backbone of Oregon’s offense last week batting a team-leading .444 at the plate with a .611 slugging percentage and .545 on-base percentage. Tommasini currently leads the team in average (.340), slugging percentage (.447), on-base percentage (.436), runs scored (16), hits (32), triples (2), total bases (42), hit by pitch (5) and stolen bases (13). After starting the first 21 games of the season in the leadoff spot, Tommasini was moved to the third spot of the lineup last Wednesday vs. Sacramento State. The Tenmile, Ore., native then made the move from left field to center in the Civil War series opener last Friday.
WHERE’S THE D?
After beginning the season with some great defensive efforts, Oregon hit a low last weekend, committing eight errors (935 fielding %) in its series against Oregon State. The Ducks had five miscues alone in Friday’s 7-1 loss, matching a season high set in a 6-5 loss at Nevada on March 12. The Ducks .962 fielding percentage is seventh in the Pac-10.
EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF
One of Oregon’s biggest struggles this season has been scoring runs. Its no surprise that Oregon’s eldest are leading the team in crucial situations. Fifth-year seniors Caleb Tommasini and Andrew Schmidt lead the Ducks with runners in scoring position, hitting .471 (8-for-17) and .444 (8-for-18), respectively.
IN THE CLUTCH
While Andrew Schmidt and Caleb Tommasini have come through in the clutch offensively, sophomore Drew Gagnier has handled the pressure on the mound. Last Saturday in front of over 15,000 at PGE Park in Portland, the redshirt sophomore entered the game at the start of the ninth inning after his team had come back from a two-run deficit to even the game in the bottom of the eighth. The Santa Cruz, Calif., native allowed only one base runner facing seven batters in the final two innings, including striking out the side in the 10th. His performance help set up John Adamson’s game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th, and earned him his first win of the year. Gagnier also has four saves to his credit this year, and is managing a 1.29 ERA in 10 appearances and 14.0 innings pitched.
DELIVERING
In six starts this season, junior righthander Erik Stavert has a 3-1 record and leads the starting staff with a 2.92 ERA, 40.0 innings pitched and 32 strikeouts. While the Livermore, Calif., native has not earned a win in each of his starts, Stavert has done his best to set up Oregon for victory, as the Ducks have been victorious in each of his last five starts. His one hiccup was a 6-3 loss at Saint Mary’s in his first start for Oregon. Last Saturday, Stavert pitched 6 and 2/3 innings of one-run baseball to keep the Ducks in the game against Oregon State, eventually leading to the Ducks 3-2 extra-inning victory.
BACK IN ACTION
Oregon pitchers Justin LaTempa and Zack Thornton made their first appearances of the 2009 season at the Rose City Invitational two weeks ago. Both pitchers were recovering after suffering shoulder injuries prior to making their way to Oregon. Thornton pitched the final inning of Oregon’s 3-1 loss to Hawai’i last Saturday, retiring the side in order and striking out one. He has made two appearances since, vs. Sacramento State and Oregon State last week. LaTempa pitched the ninth in Oregon’s 5-1 loss to Washington last Sunday, facing the minimum and striking out one.
