O Heroes and Delta Tau Delta

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Bleed Purple Volleyball Tournament took place Saturday, May 9, at Autzen Stadium on a beautiful day filled with fun, food, and intense competition. There were 37 total teams, including two UO student-athlete teams and one UO Athletic Department staff team.
The tournament raised over $5,000 for Bleed Purple, a foundation created by members of the University of San Diego Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Bleed Purple provides medical and academic scholarships to college students with cancer.
“The event was a hit and everyone had fun. We hope this is the start of a continued partnership for Delta Tau Delta and the athletic department,” said fraternity member and event organizer Demic Tipitino.
The UO Athletics staff team and a UO student-athlete team, with representatives from men’s basketball, baseball, and volleyball, each won four matches en route to a head-to-head battle in the semifinal round.
The UO staff squad took game one, but the student-athletes came back to win game two. Fatigue finally took its toll on the much older staff squad, and the student-athlete team took the decisive third set, 17-15, advancing to the title match with the victory.
“The staff team was pretty good,” Oregon men’s basketball player Drew Wiley said. “When we dropped that first game, I thought we were going to be in trouble. Thankfully we were able to rally and pull out the win.”
The UO student-athlete team, worn down by that three-game slugfest with the undermanned but inspired staff team, lost in the championship match in two games to a very skilled campus squad.
Despite the loss in the final, UO men’s basketball player Garrett Sim was glad he participated. “It’s nice to bring the different parts of the campus community together with such a fun event,” Sim said. “It was for a good cause, so I am glad I could be a part of it.”
Several members from the Duck football team also competed in the hot dog eating contest.
As for the final results, there is still some question over who actually won the event. Nevertheless, there were both proud and disgusting efforts displayed by the football players.
