Stavert Selected By Colorado In Seventh Round

SECAUCUS, N.J. - Oregon junior right-hander Erik Stavert was
selected by the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round of the 2009 Major League
Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
Stavert, the 211th overall pick, was Oregon’s ace during its
reinaugural season in 2009, recording over 1/3 of the Ducks’ victories (14)
with a 5-6 record and a 3.04 ERA. The Livermore, Calif., native was named
Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention after starting 14 games games, pitching a staff-leading 94
and 2/3 innings, allowing just 40 runs (34 earned) and dealing a staff-best 82
strikeouts. He also held opposing batters to a .230 clip.
In the regular season, Stavert ranked in the top-10 of three conference
categories; ERA (3.04, 9th), innings pitched (94.2, 4th) and strikeouts (82,
9th).
In conference action, Stavert finished the year with a 2-5 record and 2.93 ERA
(third in the Pac-10). In nine starts, he pitched a total of 61 and 1/3
innings, striking out 54 batters (9th Pac-10) and holding opponents to a .225
average (6th Pac-10).
The 6-foot-2 right-hander picked up several signature victories during the
season, his first coming in a 7-1 win over defending College World Series
champion and then 15th-ranked Fresno State. Stavert held the
Bulldogs to one run in 6 and 1/3 innings on the mound. He won decisions in his
next two starts over Santa Clara, 12-3, and Nevada, 6-5.
Stavert tossed eight innings of two-run baseball and struck out eight, helping
Oregon to its first Pac-10 victory on the road, defeating California, 5-3, on
April 18. He also led the Ducks to a 3-2 victory over UCLA on May 1, holding
the Bruins to one run on six hits while striking out eight.
The Ducks’ ace also pitched his first complete game of the season, holding
Washington to two runs on six hits while matching a career high with 10
strikeouts on April 25. Stavert dealt 10 strikeouts in three different outings
this year; against Santa Clara, Washington and Arizona.
During a seven-start stretch from March 28 - May 9, Stavert recorded a 2-3
record and maintained a 1.95 ERA, pitching a total of 50 and 2/3 innings, while
holding batters to a .205 average and dealing 43 strikeouts.
Prior to attending the UO, Stavert played the 2007 and 2008 seasons at Chabot
College in Hayward, Calif. He was named first team all-Coast South Conference
in 2007 after ending the year with a 9-1 record in 15 starts. He was selected
in the 42nd round (1,278 overall selection) by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the
2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Stavert is a 2006 graduate of Livermore High School in California.
