Walker's Pace: Rupp Runs Eighth at World Championships
Monday, August 17, 2009, 2:45 p.m.
Recent Oregon graduate Galen Rupp finished eighth in the 10,000 meters Monday at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
That's undeniably a good showing for an American distance runner as he put on a strong closing kick to post his best finish yet at a world championships.
What's perhaps more impressive is that Rupp ran a season-best time, 27:39.29, at the end of a long, yet remarkable year. Going back to the Pac-10 cross country championships a little less than 10 months ago on Oct. 31, Rupp won six NCAA titles, a pair of Pac-10 titles and the U.S. 10,000 meter title. Along the way, he collected the American indoor record at 5,000 meters (13:18.12) and the American Collegiate Record in the indoor 3,000 meters (7:44.69). He also set the school record in the indoor mile (3:57.86) and ran the anchor leg on Oregon's American record mile relay team (16:03.24).
Oh and by the way, he was chosen as the NCAA Division I Academic All-American of the Year.
So the Pace sends a hearty salute to Galen for taking us on an incredible journey and letting us come along for the ride.
