Oregon Golf Ranked No. 1

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon men’s golf team, fresh off its second win of 2010, has a No. 1 ranking for the first time in program history.
The Ducks are rated No. 1 among 285 NCAA Division I schools by Golfstat.com based on head-to-head standings and have compiled a 12-1 mark against teams ranked in the top 25. Oregon also leads the nation in adjusted scoring average at 71.49.
Since the first of the year, head coach Casey Martin’s squad has team victories at the USC Invitational and Oregon Duck Invitational, a runner-up finish at the Mauna Lani Invitational and a fourth-place showing at Fresno State’s Lexus Golf Classic. Oregon’s impressive run began in the fall, placing among the top 3 in four tourneys played.
The Ducks have also taken individual medalist honors twice this year with Eugene Wong’s record-setting 10-under par performance at USC and Daniel Miernicki’s victory at the Duck Invitational. Wong, the runner-up at yesterday’s home event, is the No. 3-rated individual according to Golfstat.com.
Oregon’s first event as a top-ranked team begins Thursday at the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State on the par-72, 7,300-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif.
