Duck Feed: Ward First Duck Taken in NFL Draft

Ward First Duck Taken in 2010 Draft
Friday, April 23, 4:30 p.m. PDT
The first “Whap” is spoken when he makes contact. The second is uttered when the opposing player hits the ground. After Friday, Oregon safety T.J. Ward will take his trademark greeting to the National Football League.
Ward earned the distinction of being the first Oregon player taken in this year’s NFL Draft, going to the Cleveland Browns with the sixth pick of Round 2 ( 38th overall). As if having your name read at the podium early in the second round wasn’t enough, Ward’s selection was announced by legendary Browns running back and NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown.
The fourth Pac-10 player and first defensive back from the conference taken in the draft, Ward played 37 games for the Ducks and had 190 tackles, five forced fumbles and three interceptions.
Oregon has now sent three defensive backs to the NFL in the last two drafts - all in the second round. Last year, Patrick Chung was the 34th overall pick by New England and All-Pro safety Jairus Byrd went 42nd to the Buffalo Bills.
