Walker's Pace: 4xMile Leads Tuesdays in Track Town; Pac-10 AOW Announced
Monday, May 3, 2010, 2:40 p.m.
The popular "Tuesdays in Track Town" series resumes tomorrow (May 4) at 7 p.m. at the Bowerman Building with a literal wagon wheel (or two) of featured speakers.
The Ducks' victorious 4xMile team from the Penn Relays - Michael Maag, Matthew Centrowitz, A.J. Acosta and Mac Fleet - will be on hand to talk about Oregon's first ever victories in the 116-year-old track classic. Eight-time All-American Nicole Blood will repersent the women's team.
Also featured will be Oregon Track Club Elite athletes Jemma Simpson, who won the women's 1,500 meters at the Oregon Relays over the weekend in an impressive 4:12.72, and Chris Thompson.
WHEATING, HOSTETLER HONORED BY PAC-10
In other track-related news from Monday, Andrew Wheating and Cyrus Hosterler have been selected as the Pac-10 track and field athletes of the week, repectively.
Here's the announcement from the league office:
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: ANDREW WHEATING, OREGON (Sr., Norwich, Vt.)
Wheating won the 800 and 1,500 meters at the Oregon Relays. He broke the meet record in the 1,500 by nearly three seconds, running 3:37.83. Friday, he came from the back of the field over the last 200 meters to beat New Mexico’s Lee Emanuel, who was the 2010 NCAA indoor mile champion. Wheating’s time was the fastest in the 1,500 in the nation this season and ranked fourth all-time at Oregon. Saturday, Wheating came back and won the 800 meters in 1:47.71. That was the third-fastest time in the NCAA
this season.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: CYRUS HOSTETLER, OREGON (Sr., Newberg, Ore.)
Hostetler took the national lead in the javelin with a winning throw of 256-6/78.19m on his third and final attempt Saturday at the Oregon Relays. Hostetler’s throw was nearly five feet farther than the previous national leader, Sam Humphreys of Texas A&M
(251-8).
FOOTBALL 60 TO BE HELD AT THE TWILIGHT MEET
And finally, a handful of Oregon football players will be running an exhibition 60 at this Saturday's Twilight Meet, which starts at 5 p.m. Look for more information on the "Football 60" from Duck Feed's Andy McNamara in the next day or so.
On a related note, watch for running back Kenyon Barner to join teammates LaMichael James and Talmadge Jackson III in the 100 meters and on the 4x100 relay team at the Twilight Meet.
