DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE PROS
Oregon had four players – Justin LaTempa, Drew Gagnier, Zack Thornton and Eddie Rodriguez – drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.
Drew Gagnier inked his contract with the Detroit Tigers on June 17. Coincidentally, he’s headed back to the stadium where he threw his last pitch in an Oregon uniform on June 6 against Florida State at the Norwich Regional. Dodd Memorial Stadium is home to the Connecticut Tigers (New York-Penn League), the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
Zack Thornton signed his contract with the Oakland A’s on June 11, and www.GoDucks.com will alert fans of his club for the summer as soon as the information is available.
Former Oregon right-hander Erik Stavert is scheduled to start for the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League today.
A seventh-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Stavert is scheduled to start Tri-City’s home opener today against the Eugene Emeralds at Gesa Stadium according to The News Tribune.
The Dust Devils is a Class A Short Season affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
Stavert is set to make a return to PK Park when Tri-City travels to Eugene for a five-game series against the Eugene Emeralds beginning on July 13.
Stavert, the 211th overall pick in the 2009 draft, was Oregon’s ace during its reinaugural season in 2009, recording over 1/3 of the Ducks’ victories with a 5-6 record and a 3.04 ERA. The Livermore, Calif., native was named Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention after starting 14 games, pitching a staff-leading 94 and 2/3 innings, allowing just 40 runs (34 earned) and dealing a staff-best 82 strikeouts. He also held opposing batters to a .230 clip.
