Blood Earns Third Straight Academic All-America Award

EUGENE, Ore. ? Distance standout Nicole Blood, the 2010 Pac-10 champion at both 5,000 and 10,000 meters, has been named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American for the third time in her career, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
The senior from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., joins Kathy Hayes (1983-85) as the only women’s track and field student-athletes in school history to earn All-America honors in both the classroom and on the track three years in a row.
The career nine-time All-American on the track was a second team academic All-America selection in 2010 for her 3.47 grade point average in journalism.
In addition to her two wins at the 2010 Pac-10 track meet, she was also the 2009 Pac-10 cross country champion, and placed third in the 10,000 meters at the 2010 NCAA Championships. She is also the school record-holder for the indoor 5,000 meters (15:51.59).
At the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, Blood put forth a truly impressive performance by winning both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. She broke Carol Gray’s 22-year-old meet record in the 10,000 meters, winning in 33:28.28 and then became the first woman since Oregon’s Stephanie Wessell in 1990 to win both the 5,000 and the 10,000 when she captured the 5,000 in a season-best 16:06.74.
She will be competing Friday at the USA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, in the 5,000 meters.
