Centrowitz Runs to Men?s 1,500 Meter Final

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Matthew Centrowitz ran a seasonal-best 3:40.14 in his first round race of the 1,500 meters Friday at the USA Track & Field Championships. The sophomore from Arnold, Md., automatically advanced to Sunday’s final.
Centrowitz was just a half step behind Leonel Manzano of Nike, who won in 3:39.88.
A.J. Acosta was third in his 1,500 heat in 3:40.91, but the junior from Oceanside, Calif., was the fastest non-qualifier for the final.
Jordan Hasay continued her quest to double at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships by winning her heat in the women’s Junior 1,500 meters. The freshman from Arroyo Grande, Calif., ran a conservative 4:34.21 to advance to Saturday’s final.
Hasay has already qualified for the World Junior meet, which begins July 19 in Moncton, Canada, in the 3,000 meters by virtue of her USA runner-up finish in that race Thursday.
Elijah Greer finished strong to take fourth in his 800 meter semifinal heat in 1:47.62. The freshman from Lake Oswego, Ore., just missed advancing to Sunday’s final. Former Duck Matt Scherer was eighth in 1:52.22
Former Duck Rachel Yurkovich finished second in the women’s javelin with a throw of 184-9. Kara Patterson won the javelin with an American record mark of 218-9.
Becca Friday finished fifth in the finals of the Junior women’s 800 meters. The freshman from Bellingham, Wash., ran 2:09.53.
Senior Nicole Blood had a solid first half of the women’s 5,000 metes, but was unable to finish the race.
Freshman Tanner Harris fouled on his three attempts in the Junior men’s hammer.
