Omlid Caps Run in OGA Amateur Championship

CANBY, Ore. – University of Oregon junior Erica Omlid became UO’s third Oregon Amateur Championship finalist in as many years with her appearance in Saturday’s event finale.
The Springfield, Ore., native and 13th-seeded Duck lost to seventh-seeded Monica Vaughn of Reedsport, 8 and 6, in the 36-hole match play final hosted by the Willamette Valley Country Club.
Vaughn won five of the first 11 holes to take a 5 up lead after her par on #1, birdie on #2, par’s on #6 and #8 and birdie on #11.
After two more ties on holes on #12-13, Omlid won her first and only hole with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole. After four more ties on holes #15-18, Vaughn won four of the last 12 holes with a par on #19, double-bogey on #24, par on #28 and birdie on #30, the last hole of the event.
Glancing at her scorecard, Omlid ended the day with four birdies (#12, 14, 20, 23) and 17 par scores (#2-5, 10-11, 13, 15-18, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29-30).

Omlid had won her four previous match play contests that had included a pair of Friday wins in the quarterfinal over fifth-seeded Kailin Downs of Corvallis, 3 and 2, and against 16th-seeded Tiffany Schoning of Portland, 3 and 2, in the semifinal.
On Thursday, Omlid advanced in the Round of 16 over fourth-seeded Caitlin McCleary, 5 and 4, and in Wednesday’s opener over 20th-seeded Ashley King of Blue River, 7-5. Also on Wednesday, 21st-seeded teammate and senior Kate Hildahl lost 2-up to 12th-seeded Kristen Svicarovich of Hillsboro.
Vaughn had advanced to Saturday’s final thanks to a pair of upset wins Friday over second-seeded and former Duck coach and player Lara Tennant in the 19-hole quarterfinal and against third-seeded Amanda Jacobs of Portland in the 22-hole semifinal.
The Duck duo competed on the same course Monday and Tuesday in the opening rounds of stroke play and shot scores of 154 and 160 to tie for 11th and 21st, respectively, in the 40-person field. In the overall standings, returning event champion Amy Simanton (72-72-144) topped the field by two strokes in the 36-hole competition, and was followed by Tennant (second, 72-74-146).
Omlid followed the lead of Duck teammate and junior Kendra Little who in 2009’s finale lost 1 up to Simanton, and Hildahl topped former Duck Karly Mills to win the ’08 event.
