ISF Jr. Worlds - Playoff Game 2 Play-by-Play Recap (Chinese Taipei 2, Canada 1)
(Cape Town, South Africa) The Canadian Junior Women’s National could not improve on their result from 2007 as they finished in fifth place at the 2011 ISF IX Junior Women’s World Championships after losing a tough 2-1 decision to Chinese Taipei and were eliminated with a 6-3 record.
Canada outhit Taipei 6-4 and had at least one runner on base in each of the seven innings but could only manage a first inning run. Taipei managed to put two hits back-to-back and scored both their runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Canada scored their only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) led the game off with single up the middle and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON). Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) walked and Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) followed with a soft line drive down the left field line to score Gilbert. With two runners on, Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) stepped up and drilled a line drive right at the Taipei left fielder for the second out. Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) ended the inning with a ground ball to second base.
Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) started for Canada and gave up a first inning walk but got the next two outs to end the inning. In the top of the second, Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) drew a one-out walk but was thrown out trying to steal second. Taipei hit a one-out triple that landed on the right field line, but Schreyer got the next two batters to ground out to end the threat.
In the third, Canada got a two-out single from Polidori but could not move her any further. In the bottom of the inning, Taipei scored their two runs. They led off with a ground ball single off Schreyer and scored their first run on a double to left center field. After a sacrifice moved the runner to third, Jaycee Affeldt came in the pitch for Canada. Unfortunately, the next play would end up being Canada’s downfall. Taipei tried a squeeze and missed the bunt, and Natalie Wideman fired the ball to Carey-Leigh Thomas who got the Taipei runner in a rundown. The runner tried to dive back to third in which Thomas looked like she had made the tag before the runner had gotten back to the bag but the umpire called the runner safe on a very close play. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the runner from third and Taipei took a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Canada got a leadoff single from Thomas who was moved to second by a Wideman bunt, but Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON grounded out to second and Noble lined out to center field to end the threat. Affeldt sent Taipei down in order in the fourth.
Canada loaded the bases in the fifth. With one out, Gilbert was hit by a pitch, Hayward singled to left center field and Polidori popped up to second before Affeldt flew out to right field on a full count pitch but the 20-second clock had expired and a ball was called to put Affeldt on first and load the bases. Thomas came up to bat and flew out to right field to end the threat.
Affeldt sit Taipei down in order again in the fifth, and in the sixth Canada got a two-out single from Noble but Brigitte Aizprua, (Terrebonne, QC) flew out to right to end the inning. In the seventh, Affeldt got the first two outs but gave up a single and hit the next batter. Shannon Davidson then made a nice play at short on a ground ball to get the force out at second.
Canada again got a runner on with two outs in the seventh as Polidori’s hard hit ground ball could not be handled by the Taipei third baseman and she was safe at first. Affeldt came up and ended the game with fly ball to right field.
Schreyer took the loss with relief help from Affeldt. The duo gave up four hits and struck out three while issuing one walk. Canada had six hits from six different players.

ISF Jr. Worlds - Game #8 (Playoff Game 1) Play-by-Play Recap (Japan 7, Canada 1)
(Cape Town, South Africa) Canada’s Junior Women’s National Team found out why Japan is considered one of the top softball countries in the world as they were beaten by a score of 7-1 in their first playoff game. Japan outhit Canada 12-3 but Canada stayed in the game with some great defensive plays to get themselves out of several jams. Canada will now play Chinese Taipei, who defeated China 5-0 earlier in the day, at 7:30am EST on Friday. Canada is now in a must-win situation from here on out. The winner of the game between Canada and Chinese Taipei will face the winner of Australia (who lost 7-3 to the USA) and New Zealand (defeated Brazil 8-0) at 12:30pm EST.
Japan took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning that was full of action. With one out, Japan hit a line drive to the fence in right field and the player tried to stretch it into a triple but Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) hit the cutoff person Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) who threw a perfect strike to Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) at third base who put the tag on the runner. Starting pitcher Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) walked the next batter and then hit the Japanese cleanup hitter. A two-strike single through the right side of the infield scored the first runner as she just beat the Gilbert throw to catcher Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) at the plate. The second run came after a wild pitch that Wideman couldn’t handle.
Canada threatened in their half of the inning when Gilbert bounced a slap over the first baseman’s head but it was an omen of what was to come as Victoria Hayward’s (Toronto, ON) slap was partially touched by the pitcher just enough to slow the ball down in time to force Gilbert out at second. Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) then forced a walk and Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) hit a slow roller to the Japanese second baseman who attempted to tag Polidori and then threw to first to retire Affeldt. It looked like the Japanese second base player missed Polidori but the second base umpire called her out on a close play. Instead of runners on second and third with two out, the double play ended Canada’s inning.
In the second, Japan hit a one-out double before Cater got the next two outs to end the inning. Canada went down in order in its own at-bat. In the third inning, Cater got into trouble giving up a single to center field and a walk. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) relieved Cater and the first batter she faced hit a hard ground ball past third baseman Carey-Leigh Thomas but shortstop Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) made a great play to come up with the ball and flip it to Thomas for the out. The next batter singled off Hovinga’s glove and loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly ball to center field scored Japan’s third run. Hovinga hit the next batter to load the bases again before Thomas got the third out by snaring a line drive.
In Canada’s half of the third, Kristy Noble hit a long drive off the fence to lead off the inning for a double. Brigitte Aizprua (Terrebonne, QC) lined a shot off the first baseman’s glove and was thrown out at first but Noble moved up to third. Gilbert was hit by a pitch and Hayward followed with a deep drive to left field to score Noble and cut the lead to 3-1. Affeldt ended the inning with a fly to left.
In the fourth, a one-out triple by Japan put a runner on third but was picked off by Canada’s catcher Natalie Wideman as Japan tried a squeeze and missed the ball and Wideman snapped a throw to Thomas at third who made the tag to get Canada out of trouble. Wideman hit a two-out single for Canada’s third hit but Davidson grounded out to second to end the inning.
Japan added four more runs on six hits in the fifth as the first batter grounded out to third and the second singled to left field. Wideman promptly picked her off at first for the second out but Japan had five straight hits to score four times before Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) came in to get the third out.
Canada and Japan never threatened after the fifth as Schreyer shut down Japan’s offense.
Cater took the loss going two plus innings allowing three runs, four hits and two walks. Hovinga pitched two and two thirds innings giving up four runs on eight hits and Schreyer finished with two and a third innings allowing no hits and striking out two. Noble doubled with singles going to Gilbert and Wideman.

ISF Jr. Worlds - Game #7 Recap (Canada 11, China 1)
(Cape Town, South Africa) Canada’s Junior Women’s National Team started off slowly today as the Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead into the third inning, but the red and white got on track by scoring a nine run inning for the second time in as many days as they beat the Czech Republic 11-1 on the run rule. Canada finished in second place in Pool A with a 6-1 record behind the United States (7-0). Canada will now have double-life in the playoff round and will play Japan (7-0) – the first place team from Pool B – at 12:30pm EST on Thursday.
The Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when they hit a homerun off starting pitcher Natalie Becker (Waterloo, ON), who would later earn the win in the pitcher`s circle for Canada. The Czechs held Canada to two walks over the first two innings before the red and white exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third. Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball before Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) slapped a ball past the first baseman that the Czech right fielder misplayed, allowing Loewen to score. Gilbert ended up on second after losing her footing going around first base, and Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) was then issued an intentional walk. Gilbert stole third base and Hayward moved up to second before Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) hit a hard line drive that handcuffed the Czech shortstop and ended up in left field to score Gilbert. Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) lined a single to center to score Hayward and put Canada up by a score of 3-1. Affeldt was replaced by pinch runner Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, BC), and Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) drew a walk to load the bases before Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) hit a ground ball to the shortstop who threw to home to force out Polidori. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) followed by driving in Franklin and Thomas with a single to right field. Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) then stepped up and lined a double to right-center field to score Wideman and Davidson. Loewen walked and Gilbert drilled another single to right field to score both Noble and Loewen. Hayward flew out to end the inning as Canada sent 12 batters to the plate.
In the top of the fourth, Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) came in relief for Becker. She walked the first batter she faced and was able to get an out before allowing a single to put runners on first and second. After Schreyer struck out the next batter for the second out, catcher Natalie Wideman caught the Czech runner too far off first base and Canada got the third out in a rundown between second and third. Canada then scored two more runs to end the game on the run rule when Polidori was safe on another Czech error, Affeldt doubled to left-center to move Polidori to third and Thomas ended the game with a double off the left field fenced that drove in both runners.
Canada registered seven hits but hit a number of hard balls as the Czechs made four errors to help Canada’s cause. Gilbert and Affeldt each had two hits while Affeldt had three runs batted in. Thomas and Noble both doubled with two runs batted in each and Davidson added a two-run single. Becker picked up the win as the duo of Becker and Schreyer combined to allow one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
With the preliminary round now completed, the playoff round will begin on Thursday. In elimination games, New Zealand (5-2; 3rd in Pool A) will take on Brazil (4-3; 4th in Pool B) at 5:00am EST and Chinese Taipei (5-2; 3rd in Pool B) will take on China (3-4; 4th in Pool A) at 7:30am EST. Then, the double-life teams will play as the United States (7-0; 1st in Pool A) takes on Australia (6-1; 2nd in Pool B) at 10:30am EST followed by Canada (6-1; 2nd in Pool A) against Japan (7-0; 1st in Pool B).

ISF Jr. Worlds - Game #6 Recap (Canada 12, China 3)
(Cape Town, South Africa) At the ISF IX Junior Women’s World Champions in Cape Town today, the Canadian Junior Women’s National Team started off a little slow but scored nine runs in the top of the fifth on route to a 12-3 run-rule win against China. Canada is now sitting in second place in their division with a 5-1 record behind the USA (5-0). Canada will play the Czech Republic (3-2) in their last preliminary round game at 5:30am EST on Wednesday. The playoff round will begin on Thursday.
Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) led Canada’s 12-hit attack by going three-for-four with six runs batted in, including a grand slam homerun. Starting pitcher and Oregon freshman Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) went four innings, only giving up two hits, to pick up the win.
Canada got off to a good start as they scored once in the first inning. With two outs, Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) hit a shallow fly ball that dropped in for a single down the left field line, Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) walked and Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) hit a ground ball through the left side of the infield to score Polidori. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) lined out to center field to end the inning. China got that run back in the bottom of the inning as they led off with a single and Canada’s shortstop Davidson bobbled a ground ball and threw the ball past Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) at second to allow the first Chinese run to score. Hovinga then walked the next batter and with runners on second and third, catcher Natalie Wideman tried to pick off the runner at third and the throw got past Canada’s third baseman Carey-Leigh Thomas. Left fielder Erika Polidori was covering on the play and made a perfect throw to Wideman at the plate to get the runner out at home. Hovinga struck out the next batter to end the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, Canada threatened in the top of the third. With one out, Hayward beat out a drag bunt, and with two out, Thomas drilled a single to left field, moving Hayward over to third. However, with two runners on, the next batter struck out swinging. In their half of the third, China drew a walk but the runner was quickly retired by Wideman when the base runner attempted to steal second base.
Canada took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. With one out, Kristy Noble singled up the middle, Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) hit a slap to third and China tried to force Noble at second but they dropped the ball with both Noble and Loewen being safe on the play. Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) hit a hard shot to the Chinese second baseman who could not handle it as Canada loaded the bases. With two outs, Hayward lined a single to center to score Noble and Loewen, and moved up to second on the throw to home. With two on, Thomas hit a hard ground ball to short but was thrown out at first. In China’s half, they were able to get a one out double, but Hovinga forced a ground out and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the fifth, Canada sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine times to take a big 12-1 lead. With one out, Davidson drew a walk, Noble drilled a line drive to center and Loewen walked to load the bases. Brigitte Aizprua (Terrebonne, QC) hit a single to left-center field scoring Canada’s first two runs of the inning. Gilbert was safe on a drag bunt when the China second base player dropped the throw to load the bases. Hayward stepped up and hit a high and deep fly ball down the right field line for a grand slam homerun. With the bases cleared, Polidori singled to right field, Thomas was hit by a pitch, Wideman hit a line drive to center to score Polidori and the ball went through the Chinese outfielder’s legs to allow Thomas to score as well. Wideman then scored on a Davidson ground out to first base. Noble followed with her third single of the day before Loewen grounded out to second to end the inning.
Natalie Becker (Waterloo, ON) came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth but got into trouble as Canada seemed to lose focus. Becker gave up a leadoff triple and Canada committed two errors on infield ground balls to allow China to score a run and have runners on second and third. Becker hit the next batter and gave up a single that scored one more. Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) relieved Becker with the bases loaded and no one out and promptly struck out the first two batters she faced and got a force out at second to end the game.
The trio of Canadian pitchers combined to allow four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Hayward led Canada with three hits and six runs batted in, while Noble also had three hits. Wideman registered two hits and two runs batted in with Polidori chipping in with two hits and singles going to Aizprua – with two runs batted in – and Thomas.

Canada banged out 13 hits, including four runs batted in by Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON), but ran into a South African team who played some inspired softball in front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd. South Africa made several key defensive plays to keep Canada off the scoreboard for the first two innings.
Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) led off the first with a slap single, but Canada could not advance her any further. In the second, Canada threatened as with one out, Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) singled to center with a soft liner and Kirsten Grant (Oakville, ON) drilled a single past the third base player to move Davidson over to second. Taylor Beck (Vancouver, BC) hit a hard ground ball that the shortstop made a nice play on to force Davidson out at third. Brigitte Aizprua (Terrebonne, QC) drew a walk to load the bases, but Hayward ended the inning with a fly out to center.
Cater struck out the side in the top of third before Canada finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) hit a slap single into left field and moved to second on a one-hopper by Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) that the pitcher snared. Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) was safe on a drag bunt that moved Loewen to third and took second when South Africa left the base open after their throw to first. Carey-Leigh Thomas stepped up and drilled a line drive to deep right center field for a two-run double. Thomas was left on second as Davidson and Beck both flew out to end the inning.
Canada left another runner on base in the fourth as Aizprua singled up the middle with one out, but was thrown out at third trying to go first to third on a line drive slap single to left field by Loewen. In the fifth, Canada added two more runs as Polidori singled to center field and moved to third on a slap single by Gilbert. Polidori scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Thomas. Davidson then drove in Gilbert with a double to left center field that was almost caught by the South African center fielder who could not hold on to the ball when she hit the ground.
In the sixth, Canada added three runs to beat South Africa on the run rule. With one out, Hayward was safe on a slap single and took second on the throw back to the pitcher. Hayward scored on a slap single by Loewen. Polidori grounded to second to move Loewen to third base, and Gilbert was hit by a pitch. Gilbert tried to steal second and stopped when the ball was thrown to the base. Loewen scored on the throw and Gilbert ended up on second when South Africa misplayed the rundown. Thomas ended the game with her second hit and fourth run batted in of the game.
Thomas, Hayward, Loewen, Gilbert and Davidson each had two hits with singles going to Polidori, Grant and Aizprua.
Play-by-Play
Outcome: Game won by Canada 7-0 in the 6th inning. Pitcher Jocelyn Carter pitches a no hitter facing one more batter than the minimum in 6 innings. Striking out 11 and conceding one walk in the process.

ISF Jr. Worlds - Game #4 Recap (Canada 7, New Zealand 1)
(Cape Town, South Africa) Canada’s Junior Women’s National Team earned their third win of the tournament with a come from behind 7-1 win over New Zealand. Canada now has a record of 3-1 after losing their first game to the United States, and will face the host team from South Africa Monday at 12:30pm EST.
Canada spotted New Zealand a 1-0 second inning lead as winning pitcher and Oregon freshman Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) gave up two of the three hits she allowed in the game during the second inning. Hovinga was sharp in the pitcher`s circle as she controlled the game allowing only three hits while striking out seven and not allowing a walk. New Zealand had only three runners left on base.
Canada’s Jennifer Gilbert (Saskatoon, SK) started the game with a slap single through the right side of the infield but was forced out at second when Victoria Hayward’s (Toronto, ON) drag was played to second. Hayward took second on some heads up base running as New Zealand left second base uncovered on the play, but Canada was unable to bring her in to score. Hovinga sit down the New Zealand hitters in order.
Canada threatened in the top of the second when Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) drew a walk. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) hit a ground ball that was misplayed by the New Zealand second baseman and the ball bounced into centre field. Thomas tried to advance to third but stumbled going around second and was thrown out in a close play at third. Davidson advanced to second on the throw. However, the next batter struck out to end the threat.
In the New Zealand half of the second inning, they scored their only run of the game as Hovinga gave up a one out single and with two out gave up a line drive single that dropped just in front of left fielder Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON). Hovinga ended the threat with a ground out to short.
After a scoreless third, Canada got back on even terms with New Zealand with two outs in the fourth. Carey-Leigh Thomas hit a line drive well over the center field fence to give Canada its first run of the game. Davidson then drew a walk, but Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) flew out to center field to end the inning.
The top of the fifth, New Zealand made a pitching change and Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, BC) was walked to lead off the inning. Franklin was thrown out at second after Gilbert laid down a bunt. Victoria Hayward then slapped a single up the middle to move Gilbert to second, before Polidori grounded out to second to move both runners ahead. Gilbert scored on a passed ball to give Canada the lead. Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) drew a walk and was replaced by Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) to pinch run. Loewen attempted to steal second and was thrown out to end the inning. New Zealand got a runner on in the bottom of the fifth when a one out line drive went off third baseman’s Carey-Leigh Thomas glove. With a runner on second, Hovinga got the third out with a strikeout.
Canada busted the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth. Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) drilled a single to right field to get things started, Thomas singled to centre and Shannon Davidson’s sacrifice bunt was dropped at first base allowing Wideman to score with Davidson and Thomas moving up to second and third. Pinch hitter Taylor Beck (Vancouver, BC) drew a walk to load the bases and Franklin was reentered to replace her on the bases. Jennifer Gilbert then fouled off three full count pitches and finally hit a monster homerun that landed over the center field fence for a grand slam. Hayward beat out a drag bunt, Erika Polidori singled to left field, Tessa Loewen was thrown out trying to beat out a drag bunt and the tenth hitter of the inning Wideman flew out to centre field to end the inning.
Hovinga sent New Zealand down in order in the sixth with two strikeouts and a ground out. Thomas got her third hit of the day in the seventh on a soft liner to right field but was stranded at first. Hovinga got the first out in the bottom of the seventh but gave up New Zealand’s third hit – a ball that went over Polidori’s head in left field. Polidori overthrew the relay person but Noble went to the ball in time to relay her throw to Thomas at third, who made the tag for the second out. Hovinga ended the game with her seventh strikeout.

Shannon Davidson’s (Whitby, ON) three-run walk off homerun in the bottom of the fifth ended the game on the run rule as Canada recorded a 7-0 victory. Canada got some good pitching today as Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) picked up the win with relief help from and Oregon freshman Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) as the duo allowed four hits with four strikeouts and four walks in the five inning game.
In the first inning, Schreyer was able to work herself out of a jam as Puerto Rico had two runners on, but Schreyer was able to get a strikeout to get out of it.

Karissa Hovinga relieved Schreyer with one out and the bases loaded and forced two infield pop ups to get out of the inning and leave Canada with a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Polidori reached base as she drilled a single off the Puerto Rican pitcher’s glove. She moved to second on a passed ball and to third on an Affeldt groundout to second. Natalie Wideman hit a grounder to second and Polidori was thrown out at home trying to score. Wideman then stole second base before Thomas drew a walk to set up the Davidson walk off homerun.

ISF Jr. Worlds - Game #1 Recap (USA 11, Canada 4)
* Click HERE for a Game 1 boxscore (PDF).
(Cape Town, South Africa) Canada`s Junior Women’s National Team opened their ISF Junior Women’s World Championships schedule with an 11-4 loss to the United States. The game was a sloppy one, as Canada’s pitchers struggled by issuing 12 walks and a hit batter, and the USA made four errors in the field. Canada will try to even its record to 1-1 tomorrow when they face Botswana who lost an extra inning 8-7 decision to South Africa in their opener on Thursday.
Canada’s starting pitcher and Oregon freshman Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) got into trouble in the first inning when she gave up two hits to lead off the inning before Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON) made a nice play at short when she was able to make a tough play on a ground ball and flip to Taylor Beck (Vancouver, BC) at third base for the force out. Hovinga then walked the next two batters to force in a run before Canada made their first of three double plays when second baseman Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) fielded a ground ball, tagged the base runner and threw to first to get Canada out of a bases loaded jam. In the top of the second, Canada threatened when Davidson walked with two outs and Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) hit a flare down the left field line to put two runners on. Taylor Beck then lined a shot that the USA pitcher knocked down and was able to recover to throw Beck out at first. Davidson later gave Canada their second double play when after a leadoff walk, she was able to convert a double play on a grounder to second.
In the bottom of the third, the USA added five runs as they sent 10 batters to the plate to take a 6-0 lead. Hovinga gave up four hits and four runs while getting one out before Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) relieved her and faced four batters walking two, hitting one and allowing a hit. With the bases loaded, Natalie Becker (Waterloo, ON) was called upon and promptly induced a double play from pitcher to home to first on a ball hit back to her to give Canada its third double play of the night.
Canada got two runs back in the top of the fourth, as Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) led off with a slow roller to short that she beat out and advanced to second on a bad throw by the American shortstop. Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) reached base on an error and was replaced on the bases by Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford, BC), and Thomas hit a fielder’s choice as Polidori was out at third. With two out, Wideman hit a ground ball to third that was thrown away at first and allowed both Affeldt and Thomas to score.
In the top of the fifth, Canada scored two more times to cut the lead to 6-4. With two out, Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) drew a walk, moved third when a grounder by Polidori went through the USA shortstop’s legs. Affeldt then scored both with a single up the middle. Affeldt moved to third when Thomas’ fly ball to centre was dropped to put the tying run on base, but Davidson ended the rally when she grounded out to short.
The USA put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the inning, as Becker gave up three hits and a walk and was replaced by Affeldt who could not stem the tide as she gave up two walks and two hits and walked the final run in to give the USA the run-rule victory with two outs.
Four Canadian pitchers gave up 11 hits, 12 walks, one hit by pitch with two strikeouts as Hovinga took the loss. Canada had four hits, two by Affeldt and singles to Polidori and Wideman as the USA pitchers struck out four Canadian batters.
