White Tapped to U.S. National Team Staff

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – USA Softball announced that University of Oregon softball head coach Mike White was named to the coaching staff for the U.S. Women’s National Team for various 2011 events.
The second-year Duck head coach will be a part of the staff that is headed by Ken Eriksen, and also includes Tairia Flowers and Stacey Nuveman.
White looks ahead to a busy summer that kicks off with the Women’s National Team Selection Camp, June 13-17 in Chula Vista, Calif.
His other appearances will include National Team Tour events at Plant City, Florida (6/25) and Salem, Virginia (6/29), the Canadian Open Fast Pitch Women’s International Championship (7/9-17), World Cup of Softball VI (7/21-25), Japan Cup (7/28-31), and also potentially the Pan American Games (10/17-23).
In his 30-year playing career, White was widely regarded as one of finest-ever U.S. National Team players. The New Zealand native became a U.S. citizen in 1994 and helped the two national teams claim two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze in his four trips with New Zealand and two with the United States
In 2000, he helped guide the USA team to a bronze medal in the World Championships when he went 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In 1999, the U.S. won the silver medal at the Pan Am Games, and he was 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 35 strikeouts. The 2009 International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame selection also played on three silver medal Pan-American Games teams in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Among other honors, the multiple Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) MVP pitcher and All-American helped lead teams to five ASA national titles and five ISC World Club Championships, and was the 2002 ASA Player of the Year.
Next week, the No. 14 Ducks (18-4) look ahead to their home opener at Howe Field against Weber State, Saturday, March 19, 1 p.m. UO then faces Utah State in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 20 at noon.
Both games are Bi-Mart 2 for 1 Ticket days. Fans that show their Bi-Mart card at the Howe Field ticket window will receive two general admission tickets for the price of one. Fans can stay after the game to get autographs from the Oregon Softball Team.
