SETTING THE STAGE
The No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (30-11, 2-7) adds another chapter to its most-prolific rivalry this weekend and welcomes Oregon State (18-16, 1-8) to Howe Field for a three-day, three-game series.
Friday’s second game of the series will be televised live by the Oregon Sports Network NW on Comcast Sports Net – the Ducks’ third and final televised regular season game on its schedule. Longtime Duck softball announcer Terry Jonz will handle the play-by-play.
Sporting the third-most overall wins in the Pac-10 this week, UO looks to get back on the winning track after last week's trip to then-No. 13 California (28-8, 5-4). The Pac-10’s leader in wins, strikeouts and ERA – senior Jolene Henderson - blanked the Ducks, 5-0 and 2-0, then relieved in the 5-2 finale that cemented the series sweep.
The Beavers also had a rough weekend in the Bay Area, and were swept at No. 11 Stanford (29-8, 5-4) by 7-0, 8-1 and 3-1 scores.
Already this season, UO has beaten six top-20 teams, including a pair of top-10 Pac-10 rivals – then-No. 3 ASU and then-No. 6 Washington. In those victories, UO one-hit the Sun Devils, 2-1, while Oregon’s 8-0 win at the Huskies tied the largest win in the series dating back to 1993.
The Pac-10 continues to confirm its reputation as the Conference of Champions with three teams already topping the national polls this season - Arizona, ASU and UCLA. UO is one of seven league members ranked top 20 nationally this week, and the eighth and final program (OSU) received a vote in the national poll last week.
As expected before the season, the fight for the league crown continues to be tightly-contested. No. 7 Arizona (36-8, 7-2) continues to hold a one-game lead in the league race over No. 2 Arizona State (39-5, 6-3). Four more teams – No. 9 Washington, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 UCLA and No. 12 California - are tied for third place (at 5-4).
SERIES HISTORY
Last year in Corvallis, UO claimed its first Civil War series since 2007 and went 2-1 after the Duck offense sported a .411 average (20-for-95).
In the finale, left fielder Allie Burger
drilled her first career home run, a three-run shot, in the seventh inning and lifted UO to a 6-5 victory, while UO won the first contest, 8-3, after banging out a school-record 19 hits. In the second game. OSU won, 7-6, after UO scored three runs in the seventh inning to almost tie the game.
Head Coach Mike White
served as an assistant coach twice vs. Oregon State in his two-year tenure in 2003 and ’04, and his former pitching pupils Amy Nyhus and Amy Harris each won a pair of games in ’04 (9-8, 2-0) and ’03 (2-1, 10-2), respectively.
RECENT DUCK HEROES
Last week at No. 13 California, freshman lead-off hitter Courtney Ceo
upped her team lead in multi-hit games (17) with a pair of 2-for-4 efforts. On the season, the team’s hit leader (51) has hit safely in 30 of 38 games, and has not been held hitless more than one straight game.
Frosh Kailee Cuico
also went 2-for-3 twice, and knocked in two runs with a first-inning single Sunday. For the series, Ceo (.455, 5-for-11) and Cuico (.444, 4-for-9) paced the team in hitting, and sophomore Samantha Pappas
also topped .300 (.375, 3-for-8). On the mound, senior Britany Rumfelt logged a 0.00 ERA in her two relief appearances, and struck out seven in her five innings.
SEASON SCORECARD
In the first three weeks of Pac-10 play, UO went 1-2 in its first two series vs. a pair of top-10 teams - then-No. 3 Arizona State (W 2-1, L, 2-0, 10-5) and at then-No. 6 Washington (W, 8-0; L, 3-2, 4-2), then dropped all three games at No. 13 Cal (5-0, 2-0, 5-2).
In other top-20 tilts, UO opened the year with wins vs. then-No. 16 BYU (5-0) and then-No. 19 Texas A&M (3-2). In Las Vegas the next week, it handed World Series returnee and then-No. 9 Hawai’i its first loss of the season (13-5, 5 innings). Two weeks later in Orlando, it split with then-No. 1 Alabama (10-0 loss, 5 innings) and then-No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette (5-2).
Against 2010 NCAA tourney returnees, UO is 9-9 overall this season with added wins vs. Illinois (2-1), Illinois State (6-0, 6 innings) and North Carolina (1-0), and a loss to Virginia (3-2).
BEAVER SEASON REVIEW
So far this season, Oregon State (18-6, 1-8) has finished above .500 in two series with its 4-1 season-opening Kajikawa Classic trip, and in its 4-0 spring break series vs. Utah State (9-0, 8-1) and Weber State (8-0, 5-0).
The OSU pitching staff has balanced its innings equally between the trio of sophomore Marina Demore (7-5, 3.03 ERA), sophomore transfer Tina Andreana (5-7, 2.52) and junior Paige Hall (6-4, 3.15 ERA), while the latter pitched 222 of the team’s 352.1 innings last year. Hall ranks top-10 in the league in games in relief (second, 15), games finished (third, 13), appearances (eighth, 24), and Demore stands eighth in opposing batting average (eighth, .194)
At the plate, Beavers ranked top-10 in the league this week include sophomore Lea Cavestany (doubles, seventh-tie, 10), sophomore transfer Desiree Beltran (hit by pitch, fifth-tie, 7), junior Nikki Chandler (sacrifice bunts, second-tie, 6) and sophomore Maggie Doremus (sacrifice bunts, second-tie, 6).
Among various NCAA team rankings, the Beavers rank top 100 nationally in fielding (19th, .973) and ERA (95th, 2.90), and two individuals stand likewise – Hall (walks, 62nd, 0.64 p/g) and Doremus (fewest strikeouts, 40th, once every 19.3 at-bats).

Last year at Oregon State, freshman left fielder Allie Burger

HOME SWEET HOWE
With its 2-1 win vs. then-No. 3 ASU in early April, the Duck beat their fourth, top-10 ranked team at Howe Field in as many Pac-10 series (going back to 2010). Earlier this season, UO went 4-0 in nonconference action vs. Weber State (6-1, 6-2) and Utah State (11-3, 9-0).
In 2010, the Ducks went 14-5 in the friendly confines after it rattled off a 12-0 start, then staked at least one win in every home series against the nation's top conference. Oregon's perfect early season run included its first-ever sweep of then-No. 13 Cal in April. The following weekend, UO beat its first top-ranked team, then-No. 1 Washington, 4-0, since 2004 when it topped the returning national player of the year Danielle Lawrie. Oregon’s other league home victories came vs. then-No. 3 Arizona (2-1) in nine innings when Neena Bryant
hit a two-run shot off another of the nation’s top pitchers, Kenzie Fowler.
FURTHER UP DOWN THE ROAD
Next week, Oregon looks ahead to its final away Pac-10 series at eight-time national champion Arizona (Fri.-Sun., April 29-May 1), while the Ducks close the regular season at home with three-game sets vs. Stanford (Fri.-Sun., May 6-8) and UCLA (Thu.-Sat., May 12-14).

In this week’s 11th NFCA and USA Softball polls of the season, the Ducks were tabbed No. 19 and No. 21 nationally in the USA Softball and NFCA national polls released Tuesday.
Oregon has now been ranked for 23 straight editions by USA Softball and 18 straight polls by the NFCA. UO's week-by-week NFCA/USA SB rankings this year follow: 4/12 (17/17), 4/5 (15/16), 3/30 (14/15), 3/23 (15/16), 3/16 (16/15), 3/9 (15/14), 3/2 (13/13), 2/22 (13/13), 2/15 (14/14), Preseason (14/14).
Among this week's two editions, nine Duck foes were ranked top 25 (USA SB / NFCA) - Arizona State (2/2), Alabama (3/4), Arizona (7/7), Washington (10/9), Stanford (11/10), UCLA (13/11), California (12/12), Louisiana-Lafayette (17/17) and Texas A&M (21/19).
Three other Duck opponents – BYU, Hawai’i, and Pacific - received vote(s) in at least one poll.
Overall in both editions, Michigan became the seventh team this season to be ranked first after it went 4-0 last week with wins over Western Michigan and Central Michigan by 6-1 and 3-0 scores, and at Illinois, 8-6 and 9-7.
The previous No. 1 – now-No. 2 Arizona State (37-4, 4-2) - went 2-1 at home vs. UCLA with 2-0 and 5-0 wins and a 4-1 loss. Among other teams ranked top five Tuesday - No. 3/4 Alabama went 3-0 last week, while No. 4/3 Georgia, No. 4/6 Tennessee and No. 6/5 Texas sported 4-0 marks.

POWER SURGE
Oregon’s long-ball bats have continued to spark the offense as 12 players have combined to sock 49 homers (for a 1.04 home run per game ratio). Compare that with last year’s total (51) by 13 players that ranked fourth-most overall in school history. From a historical standpoint, UO’s highest overall total (69) came in a 69-game season in 1999 (for a 1.0 per game ratio).

The current record belongs to the same staff last year (470, 381.2 innings (1.23 K/Inning)) that easily topped the former mark (394, 432.2 innings, 57 games) set by head coach Mike White

PICKS OF THE PAC-10
In early March, sophomore Jessica Moore
became only the second Duck hurler to stake multiple Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors in her career and 34th overall all-time (including pitcher and player honors).
The Stockton, Calif., native went 3-0 the week before in the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. In the four-game tourney, she led UO in wins (3), strikeouts (19), ERA (0.00), innings (16.0) and opponent batting average (.115); and allowed three hits or less in all three of her starts
Moore is one of four Ducks on the current roster that have scored previous honors, as the quartet of senior first baseman Monique Fuiava
and sophomore outfielders Allie Burger
and Samantha Pappas
all staked honors last year.
Last year, Moore picked up her first honor after she helped the team to a 6-0 record vs. Idaho State, Seattle and at Portland State. Altogether that week, Moore went 3-0, averaged more than two strikeouts per inning (29 / 14 innings), and led the team in strikeouts (29), opposing batting average (.082), ERA (0.00), innings (14.0), appearances (3) and starts (2). She also combined with Samantha Skillingstad
on a five-inning perfect game in the second Idaho State meeting, also the 18th no-hitter in school history.

HONOR ROLL
Last May, Oregon’s talented ‘Fab Four’ freshman class was rewarded
for its impressive debut seasons with a host of All-Pac-10 and
All-Region honors.
In the vote by league head coaches, right fielder Samantha Pappas
picked
up UO’s second Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honor, and was one of only
two first-year players named to the 15-person All-Pac-10 First Team.
Pitcher Jessica Moore
was chosen to the All-Pac-10 Second Team and
became UO’s second freshman pitcher to receive All-Pac-10 acclaim after
Katie Wiese was a first-team pick in 1989.
Altogether, UO has staked 18 first-team and 34 second-team honors in the award dating back to 1988.

were named to the 12-person All-Region Second Team.
Dating back to 1988, UO has staked 13 first-team and 21 second-team
All-Region laurels. Its three-player tally in 2010 matched its
third-highest count ever, and was its most since four players received
similar honors in 2007 (while its all-time high (5) came in 1989).
DOUBLE YOUR FUN
The Ducks again sport a pair of twins on their roster in 2011 – all four of whom have frequently started the past two seasons.
The fraternal set of seniors Ashley Kivett
and Cortney Kivett
sisters have combined to start 294 games (137/157) in the infield their first three years. Cortney paced the Pac-10 in steals as a freshman with UO’s fourth-most ever in a season (33), while Ashley was one of the team’s leading hitters in Pac-10 play in ’10 with her .273 average and ranked second in the Pac-10 in runners picked off (4).
The identical sophomore pair of Kelsey Chambers
and Lindsey Chambers
have combined for 30 homers (21 / 9) in their careers, including eight and three, respectively, this season. They saw the most action among newcomers as freshmen when Kelsey started in right field the first half of ‘09, then started 24 games in the remainder at second base (and had two more at shortstop), while Lindsey’s starts came in the left side of the infield with 18 at third base and 22 at shortstop.
TOP DUCK PROFILE
Second-year head coach Mike White
is widely regarded as one of finest-ever U.S. National Team players and pitching mentors. The 2009 International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame selection, also is well-known in the area as an integral part of two of Oregon’s greatest teams in 2003 and ‘04 and one of the West Coast’s top prep coaches.
In his prior Duck stint as an assistant coach, the Ducks lowered their ERA from 3.01 the season prior to his arrival to 2.12 and 1.68, respectively, while its strikeout totals of 347 and 394 – then the best two in school history – far outdistanced its 223 total from 2002.
His first-year pupils included then-freshman Amy Harris who set a single-season strikeout record (180) his first season, while senior Andrea Vidlund led the nation in saves and set a Pac-10 record (11). The next season, newcomer Ani Nyhus was an All-Pac-10 First Team and NCAA Regional All-Tournament choice and two-time conference pitcher of the week. The junior college transfer notched 20 wins (25-12), rewrote the program’s single-season strikeout record (202) and pitched a no-hitter vs. Utah State. Catcher Jenn Poore was also an All-American and All-Pac-10 Second Team honoree in ’04 and drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league.
Since then, he continued to live in Eugene with his family and remained active as an assistant coach for one of the nation’s top programs at Marist High School during the 2008-09 seasons. The program ended 2009 ranked 22nd nationally by USA Today and won consecutive 4A state titles after identical 29-1 seasons. He also coached the Northwest Thunder and Northwest Bullets Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) youth club teams and served as a private instructor for various elite players of all levels.
As a player, the New Zealand native became a U.S. citizen in 1994 and helped the two national teams claim two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze in his four trips with New Zealand and two with the United States
In 2000, he helped guide the USA to a bronze medal in the World Championships when he went 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In 1999, the U.S. won the silver medal at the Pan Am Games, and he was 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 35 strikeouts. He also played on three silver medal Pan-American Games teams in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Among other honors, the multiple Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) MVP pitcher and All-American helped lead teams to five ASA national titles and five ISC World Club Championships, and was the 2002 ASA Player of the Year.
MORE LOVE FOR THE DUCK STAFF
Oregon’s highly-regarded staff also includes three other talented coaches that sport equally impressive playing resumes.
Second-year Duck coach and former UCLA All-American Lisa Dodd
has earned similar respect as a Nevada assistant coach after she helped them to WAC conference title, top-20 rankings and NCAA bid in 2008. As a pitcher and infielder, the 2007 NFCA Second-Team All-American helped the Bruins to three straight WCWS trips and a Pac-10 title in 2006. She went on to play professionally in Italy in 2007 and ’08, while as a prep she was tabbed the 2003 Gatorade National Prep Player of the Year.
White first shared the field with first-year assistant coach Blake Miller
when the latter was a top infielder for the U.S. National Team. As a collegiate coach the past 10 years, Miller has worked with two All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans, and guided four teams to regional bids and one Junior College World Series trip. His resume includes stops as a head coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville the past three seasons and at Darton College (2006-07) and as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State (2005), Missouri Western State (2004) and Mesa State (2001-03).
The Ducks rounded out one of its most experienced coaching staffs ever with the addition of Julie Strand
as a volunteer assistant coach. The Eugene native joined the program after serving the last two seasons as the head coach at Southern Utah (2009-10) and four seasons as its assistant coach (2005-08). In that stretch, she helped the Thunderbirds advance twice to the NCAA Tournament (2006-07) after three Mid-Con Conference tourney championships (2005-07) and a pair of regular season league titles (2005-06). She also served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Colorado, and was a two-time all-league catcher for Colorado State University-Pueblo.

PAC-10 PRESEASON POLL
In the annual Pacific-10 Conference Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, defending national champion UCLA and runner-up Arizona tied for first place after they each received 46 points and four-first-place votes. Arizona State followed in third place with 30 points, and was trailed by California (fourth-tie, 26), Washington (fourth-tie, 26), Stanford (sixth, 22), Oregon (seventh, 21) and Oregon State (eighth, 7).
THE ‘CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS’
The Pac-10’s moniker is validated by the fact the eight Pac-10 schools have combined to win 23 of the 28 softball NCAA national championships, including the last five by four different teams. Last year, the Pac-10 advanced six teams to the 16-team Super Regional level, including three of the eight World Series qualifiers (national champion UCLA, runner-up Arizona and defending champion Washington).

TICKET INFORMATION
In 2011, the Ducks will host 16 home games on 14 dates at Howe Field. UO swept its two non-conference doubleheader dates early in the schedule vs. Weber State (Sat., March 19, 1 p.m.) and Utah State (Sun., March 20, Noon), then went 1-2 vs. then-No. 3 Arizona State, April 8-10.
In three weeks, UO caps its home slate vs. returning national champion UCLA, Friday-Sun., May 12-14. The Ducks also have a three-game slates against Oregon State (Thu.-Sat., April 21-23) and Stanford (Fri.-Sun., May 6-8).
Varsity sport tickets are available through the Oregon Athletic Ticket Office (1-800-WEB-FOOT, 541 346-4461 locally), and tickets are for general admission seating are $5 for Adults and $3 for Children (2-18) and Seniors (62+). Groups of 10 or more that arrange for tickets in advance can purchase GA tickets for $2 each.
