SETTING THE STAGE
The No. 16 University of Oregon softball team (33-11, 5-7) travels to No. 9 Arizona (36-11, 7-5) this weekend to try and beat one of the nation’s most respected teams for the fourth straight season.
Last weekend at home, UO topped Oregon State, 7-1, 7-4 and 8-1, for its first Civil War sweep since 1994 (and fourth since the first series in 1974).
Sporting the third-most overall wins in the Pac-10, UO heads to the Wildcats’ den after a pair of wildly divergent series last weekend. The returning national runner-up was without its top pitcher – sophomore Kenzie Fowler - and the former Pac-10 leader lost all three games at home to then-No. 2 ASU by scores of 4-0, 13-10 (5) and 6-1.
Already this season, UO has beaten six top-20 teams, including a pair of top-10 Pac-10 rivals – then-No. 3 ASU and then-No. 6 Washington. In those victories, UO one-hit the Sun Devils, 2-1, while Oregon’s 8-0 win at the Huskies tied the largest win in the series dating back to 1993.
The Pac-10 continues to confirm its reputation as the Conference of Champions with three teams already topping the national polls this season - Arizona, ASU and UCLA. UO is one of seven league members ranked top 16 nationally this week, and the eighth and final program (OSU) received a vote in the national poll two weeks ago.
As expected before the season, the fight for the league crown continues to be tightly-contested with ASU (42-5, 9-3) now in the lead by two games. No. 8 UCLA (31-10, 7-5), No. 9 Arizona (36-11, 7-5) and No. 9 California (30-9, 7-5) are tied for second place, one game ahead of No. 11 Washington (31-8, 6-6) and No. 13 Stanford (32-10, 6-6), with No. 16 UO (33-11, 5-7) another game back.
SERIES HISTORY
The past two years at home, a pair of Duck then-freshmen staked 2-1, extra-inning complete game wins. Last year, Jessica Moore
struck out 13 in 11 innings, while Samantha Skillingstad
fanned eight in her 10-inning decision two years ago.
UO also beat UA twice in ’09 to take its second series in the rivalry and first since 1989 when it owned a 4-2 advantage. Overall since their first meeting in 1984, UA owns a 78-14 edge with six of UO’s wins coming since 2004 (and five of those coming in Eugene).
The Ducks also staked single wins in 2005 in Eugene (3-0) and ’04 in Eugene (1-0) when first-year head coach Mike White
served as a Duck volunteer coach and assistant coach, respectively.
RECENT DUCK HEROES
Against the Beavers last week, two freshmen hit .500 and went 4-for-8 – the Pac-10’s top freshman batting-wise - Courtney Ceo
(1 HR, 4 RBI) - and Alexa Peterson
(2 2B, 3 RBI). Three others topped .300 – and sophomore Samantha Pappas
(.444, 3 RBI) and seniors Kaitlin Vitek
(.429, 3 HR, 4 RBI) and Monique Fuiava
(.364, 1 HR, 4 RBI).
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore (17-6) won the first and third games, and saved the other en route to a 0.57 ERA and six strikeouts.
Team-wise, UO dominated the series comparisons in hitting (.329-.218), runs (22-6) and ERA (1.67-6.22).
SEASON SCORECARD
In the first three weeks of Pac-10 play, UO went 1-2 vs. a pair of top-10 teams - then-No. 3 Arizona State (W 2-1, L, 2-0, 10-5) and at then-No. 6 Washington (W, 8-0; L, 3-2, 4-2) - then dropped all three games at No. 13 Cal (5-0, 2-0, 5-2).
In other top-20 tilts, UO opened the year with wins vs. then-No. 16 BYU (5-0) and then-No. 19 Texas A&M (3-2). In Las Vegas the next week, it handed World Series returnee and then-No. 9 Hawai’i its first loss of the season (13-5, 5 innings). Two weeks later in Orlando, it split with then-No. 1 Alabama (10-0 loss, 5 innings) and then-No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette (5-2 win).
Against 2010 NCAA tourney returnees, UO is 9-9 overall this season with added wins vs. Illinois (2-1), Illinois State (6-0, 6 innings) and North Carolina (1-0), and a loss to Virginia (3-2).
ARIZONA SEASON REVIEW
Before last weekend’s sweep by now-No. 1 ASU at home, No. 9 UA opened Pac-10 play by sweeping Stanford on the road (8-0, 6-1, 2-0), then went 2-1 at Oregon State (L 3-1, W – 4-1, 6-3) and at home vs. Washington (W 3-0, 13-5, L 6-1).
Splitting the No. 1 ranking nationally entering the season with UCLA, UA went 29-6 in the non-conference slate. Its lone losses were to Oklahoma (11-1, 5-3), Georgia (8-0), Baylor (3-2, 6-0) and Michigan (8-0), and it wins against returning NCAA qualifiers came against Texas A&M (6-3), LSU (4-1), Virginia (9-3), San Diego State (5-0), Louisiana-Lafayette (10-2) and DePaul (7-1).
Among various NCAA team rankings this week, Arizona ranks top 12 nationally in slugging (fifth, 0.570), home runs (sixth, 1.45 pg), batting (ninth, .334) and scoring (11th, 6.60 rpg).
Wildcat hitters ranked top 40 nationally this week include:
- senior outfielder Brittany Lastrapes (batting, 11th, .459; on-base pct., 13th, .555; doubles, 33rd, 0.32 p/g)
- redshirt senior catcher Stacie Chambers (home runs, eighth, 16; RBI, ninth, 1.23 p/g)
- sophomore third baseman Brigette Del Ponte (triples, ninth, 0.38 pg; RBI, 24th, 1.13 p/g; home runs p/g, 29th, .320; slugging, 34th, .804).
- senior outfielder Lauren Schutzler (runs, 21st, 1.06 p/g)
Among pitchers nationally, sophomore Kenzie Fowler ranks top 60 in wins (15th, 21), ERA (41st, 1.61), shutouts (35th, 6) and strikeouts (51st, 176, 7.9 p/7 innings),
Fowler and Lastrapes made the top-25 cut for USA Softball Player of the Year consideration announced recently, and were All-Pac-10 First-Team choices last year with Chambers, while Del Ponte and Schutzler were Second-Team honorees.
Twenty-sixth-year head coach Mike Candrea sports an impressive 1267-270-2 record, including a 138-40 postseason mark that includes 21 straight World Series trips and eight national titles (1991, ‘93, ‘94, ‘96, ‘97, 2001, ’06, ‘07).
WILDCAT BEATERS
In UO’s 2-1 win last year over No. 3 UA, then-senior Neena Bryant
drilled a two-run, 11th-inning home run off Kenzie Fowler that moved her up Duck all-time career categories in home runs (second, 34), RBI (second, 141) and hits (sixth, 208).
In the same game, then-freshman Jessica Moore
held the nation’s top run-producing offense scoreless until the top of the 11th inning en route to 13 strikeouts – the fourth-most in school history.
For the series, two Ducks logged multiple hits – Kaylan Howard
(2-for-8, 1 walk) and Bryant (2-for-9, 3 walks), and Samantha Pappas
also walked three times and also hit safely once.
In ’09, Monique Fuiava
hit safely once in all three games. Kelsey Chambers
and Ashley Kivett
went 2-for-4 in the team’s 2-1 win in the finale, while then-freshman Samantha Skillingstad
struck out eight, walked four and withstood 10 hits to win 2-1 in 10 innings.
HOME SWEET HOWE
In mid-April, UO raised its home season record to 8-2 after its first sweep of Oregon State since 1994. Two weeks before, Oregon’s 2-1 win vs. then-No. 3 ASU in early April marked its fourth, top-10 ranked victim at Howe Field in as many Pac-10 series (going back to 2010). Earlier this season, UO went 4-0 in non-conference action vs. Weber State (6-1, 6-2) and Utah State (11-3, 9-0).
In 2010, the Ducks went 14-5 in the friendly confines after they rattled off a 12-0 start, then staked at least one win in every home series against the nation's top conference. Oregon's perfect early season run included its first-ever sweep of then-No. 13 Cal in April. The following weekend, UO beat its first top-ranked team, then-No. 1 Washington, since 2004, with its 4-0 victory against the returning national player of the year Danielle Lawrie. Oregon’s other league home victories came vs. then-No. 3 Arizona (2-1) in nine innings when Neena Bryant
hit a two-run shot off another of the nation’s top pitchers, Kenzie Fowler.
FURTHER UP DOWN THE ROAD
Next week, the Ducks return home to its final two Pac-10 series at Howe Field for three-game sets vs. Stanford (Fri.-Sun., May 6-8) and UCLA (Thu.-Sat., May 12-14).
The NCAA 64-team selection show follows on ESPN-U on Sunday, May 15 between 7:30-8 p.m. PT on ESPNews.
Each weekend of the postseason is double-elimination play with 16, four-team regionals held Thursday-Saturday, May 19-22; eight, two-team, two-day Super Regionals held Thursday-Sunday, May 26-29, and the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., Thursday-Wednesday, June 2-8.

POWER SURGE
Oregon’s long-ball bats have continued to spark the offense as 12 players have combined to sock 55 homers (for a 1.25 home run per game ratio). Compare that with last year’s total (51) in 57 games by 13 players that ranked fourth-most overall in school history. From a historical standpoint, UO’s highest overall total (69) came in a 69-game season in 1999 (for a 1.0 per game ratio).
With her three homers against Oregon State, Kaitlin Vitek
is tied for the team lead in 2011 with junior Kelsey Chambers
(8) – only three away from the 10th-best mark in school history. Other Ducks that have cleared the fences include sophomore Samantha Pappas
and senior Monique Fuiava
(7), junior freshmen Courtney Ceo
and Kailee Cuico
(5), Christie Nieto
(4), junior Lindsey Chambers
and freshman Alexa Peterson
(3), sophomores Kaylan Howard
and Jessica Moore
(2) and sophomore Allie Burger
(1).
On the career list, Fuiava is tied for sixth all-time for the Ducks (26), while Pappas hit 11 homers last year and tied for eighth all-time for UO in a season.
AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH

On the individual front in ‘10, outfielder Allie Burger ranked 72nd in batting (.387), and right fielder Samantha Pappas stood 82nd nationally in batting (.383), 88th in RBI (0.84 per game), 90th on-base percentage (.472), 123rd in slugging (.641) and 131st in home runs (11).
Jessica Moore was equally easy to find last season on the final NCAA pitching stat charts in strikeouts (36th, 8.7 per 7 inning average), total strikeouts (46th, 238), ERA (52nd, 1.86) and fewest hits allowed (160th, 6.38 per 7 innings). The Sutter, Calif., native ranked 11th nationally in saves (4), and was followed by teammate Brittany Rumfelt (101st-t, 2).
PICKS OF THE PAC-10
In early March, sophomore Jessica Moore
became the second Duck hurler to stake multiple Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors in her career and 34th overall all-time (including pitcher and player honors).
The Sutter, Calif., native went 3-0 the week before in the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. In the four-game tourney, she led UO in wins (3), strikeouts (19), ERA (0.00), innings (16.0) and opponent batting average (.115); and allowed three hits or less in all three of her starts
Moore is one of four Ducks on the current roster that have scored previous honors, as the quartet of senior first baseman Monique Fuiava
and sophomore outfielders Allie Burger
and Samantha Pappas
all staked honors last year.
Last year, Moore picked up her first honor after she helped the team to a 6-0 record vs. Idaho State, Seattle and at Portland State. Altogether that week, Moore went 3-0, averaged more than two strikeouts per inning (29 / 14 innings), and led the team in strikeouts (29), opposing batting average (.082), ERA (0.00), innings (14.0), appearances (3) and starts (2). She also combined with Samantha Skillingstad
on a five-inning perfect game in the second Idaho State meeting, also the 18th no-hitter in school history.
HONOR ROLL
Last May, Oregon’s talented ‘Fab Four’ freshman class was rewarded for its impressive debut seasons with a host of All-Pac-10 and All-Region honors.
In the vote by league head coaches, right fielder Samantha Pappas
picked up UO’s second Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honor, and was one of only two first-year players named to the 15-person All-Pac-10 First Team. Pitcher Jessica Moore
was chosen to the All-Pac-10 Second Team and became UO’s second freshman pitcher to receive All-Pac-10 acclaim after Katie Wiese was a first-team pick in 1989.
Altogether, UO has staked 18 first-team and 34 second-team honors in the award dating back to 1988.
Freshman left fielder Allie Burger
, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers
, sophomore pitcher Samantha Skillingstad
, and senior center fielder Neena Bryant
added All-Pac-10 honorable mention acclaim, and the latter player claimed her second All-Pac-10 honorable mention nod after she received All-Pac-10 Second Team acclaim the last two seasons (2008, ’09).
All three aforementioned first-year Ducks (Burger, Moore and Pappas) were tabbed to the All-Pac-10 Freshman Team, and second baseman Kaylan Howard
was chosen as an honorable mention.
On the NFCA All-Pacific Region squads, Pappas was tabbed to the 12-person All-Region First Team, and pitcher Jessica Moore
and left fielder Allie Burger
were named to the 12-person All-Region Second Team.
Dating back to 1988, UO has staked 13 first-team and 21 second-team All-Region laurels. Its three-player tally in 2010 matched its third-highest count ever, and was its most since four players received similar honors in 2007 (while its all-time high (5) came in 1989).
DOUBLE YOUR FUN
The Ducks again sport a pair of twins on their roster in 2011 – all four of whom have frequently started the past two seasons.
The fraternal set of seniors Ashley Kivett
and Cortney Kivett
sisters have combined to start 294 games (137/157) in the infield their first three years. Cortney paced the Pac-10 in steals as a freshman with UO’s fourth-most ever in a season (33), while Ashley was one of the team’s leading hitters in Pac-10 play in ’10 with her .273 average and ranked second in the Pac-10 in runners picked off (4).
The identical sophomore pair of Kelsey Chambers
and Lindsey Chambers
have combined for 30 homers (21 / 9) in their careers, including eight and three, respectively, this season. They saw the most action among newcomers as freshmen when Kelsey started in right field the first half of ‘09, then started 24 games in the remainder at second base (and had two more at shortstop), while Lindsey’s starts came in the left side of the infield with 18 at third base and 22 at shortstop.
NEW TO THE FOLD
The Ducks will say farewell to five seniors after this season, yet will welcome a six-person newcomer class next fall. The group of prep seniors includes pitcher Karissa Hovinga (Ralston, Neb.), outfielders Alyssa Gillespie (Hillsboro, Ore.), Sara Goodrum (Red Mountain, Ariz.) and Janie Takeda (Placentia, Calif.), and infielders Hannah Melick (Auburn, Wash.) and Jamie Rae Sullivan (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
An all-state first-team pick in 2009 and ’10 and second-team choice in ’08 for Glencoe High School, Gillespie helped lead her team to the state title the last three seasons, and also played for the Northwest Blaze club team, the 2009 ASA national tourney champions.
Goodrum was an All-Class 5A state team honorable mention as a junior, and a 5A All-Region East Valley pick the last two seasons for Red Mountain High School.
Hovinga has been an all-class all-state first-team choice the last three seasons, and helped her Pappillion team to the state title last fall and also as a freshman, to go along with four district titles and two conference crowns (2008, ’09).
Melick was a South Puget Sound League First-Team pick as a freshman and junior, and Second-Team choice as a sophomore for Auburn High School, and has played for the Washington Ladyhawks club that placed third in the 2010 Champions Cup.
Sullivan was a Sunset-League First-Team pick as a junior for Marina High School and an All-CIF Second-Team choice as a sophomore, while her Firecrackers 18 Gold club team won the Canada Cup and Colorado Fireworks Tournament in 2009 and 2010.
Takeda is a three-time all-league first-team pick for El Dorado High School and was her team's MVP last spring and an All-County Second-Team honoree, while her OC Batbusters club took third place in the 2010 Premier Girls Softball Tournament.
TOP DUCK PROFILE
Second-year head coach Mike White is widely regarded as one of finest-ever U.S. National Team players and pitching mentors. The 2009 International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame selection, also is well-known in the area as an integral part of two of Oregon’s greatest teams in 2003 and ‘04 and one of the West Coast’s top prep coaches.
Sporting a program-best 69.7 winning percentage as its head coach, White has compiled a 69-32 mark already after leading the Ducks to its first-ever Super Regional trip last season.
In his first year at the helm, Oregon went 36-21 in 2010 – nearly reverse the previous year’s mark (16-34) – and staked its most Pac-10 wins (8) since its 10 in 2003 and ’04. Oregon beat five different Pac-10 teams – No. 1 Washington, No. 3 Arizona, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 13 California (3 times and its first-ever sweep in the series) and OSU (2) – for the first time since topping all seven in ’04.
The Ducks opened the postseason by upsetting then-No. 7 ranked / No. 8 seeded Georgia Tech twice in Atlanta in the regional, and ultimately ended the year ranked 14th nationally in both polls.
In his prior Duck stint as an assistant coach, the Ducks lowered their ERA from 3.01 the season prior to his arrival to 2.12 and 1.68, respectively, while its strikeout totals of 347 and 394 – then the best two in school history – far outdistanced its 223 total from 2002.
His first-year pupils included then-freshman Amy Harris who set a single-season strikeout record (180) his first season, while senior Andrea Vidlund led the nation in saves and set a Pac-10 record (11). The next season, newcomer Ani Nyhus was an All-Pac-10 First Team and NCAA Regional All-Tournament choice and two-time conference pitcher of the week. The junior college transfer notched 20 wins (25-12), rewrote the program’s single-season strikeout record (202) and pitched a no-hitter vs. Utah State. Catcher Jenn Poore was also an All-American and All-Pac-10 Second Team honoree in ’04 and drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league.
Since then, he continued to live in Eugene with his family and remained active as an assistant coach for one of the nation’s top programs at Marist High School during the 2008-09 seasons. The program ended 2009 ranked 22nd nationally by USA Today and won consecutive 4A state titles after identical 29-1 seasons. He also coached the Northwest Thunder and Northwest Bullets Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) youth club teams and served as a private instructor for various elite players of all levels.
As a player, the New Zealand native became a U.S. citizen in 1994 and helped the two national teams claim two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze in his four trips with New Zealand and two with the United States
In 2000, he helped guide the USA to a bronze medal in the World Championships when he went 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In 1999, the U.S. won the silver medal at the Pan Am Games, and he was 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 35 strikeouts. He also played on three silver medal Pan-American Games teams in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Among other honors, the multiple Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) MVP pitcher and All-American helped lead teams to five ASA national titles and five ISC World Club Championships, and was the 2002 ASA Player of the Year.
MORE LOVE FOR THE DUCK STAFF
Oregon’s highly-regarded staff also includes three other talented coaches that sport equally impressive playing resumes.
Second-year Duck coach and former UCLA All-American Lisa Dodd has earned similar respect as a Nevada assistant coach after she helped them to a WAC Conference title, top-20 rankings and NCAA bid in 2008. As a pitcher and infielder, the 2007 NFCA Second-Team All-American starred on Bruin teams that claimed three straight WCWS trips and a Pac-10 title in 2006. She went on to play professionally in Italy in 2007 and ’08, while as a prep she was tabbed the 2003 Gatorade National Prep Player of the Year.
White first shared the field with first-year assistant coach Blake Miller
when the latter was a top infielder for the U.S. National Team. As a collegiate coach the past 10 years, Miller has worked with two All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans, and guided four teams to regional bids and one Junior College World Series trip. His resume includes stops as a head coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville the past three seasons and at Darton College (2006-07) and as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State (2005), Missouri Western State (2004) and Mesa State (2001-03).
The Ducks rounded out one of its most experienced coaching staffs ever with the addition of Julie Strand
as a volunteer assistant coach. The Eugene native joined the program after serving the last two seasons as the head coach at Southern Utah (2009-10) and four seasons as its assistant coach (2005-08). In that stretch, she helped the Thunderbirds advance twice to the NCAA Tournament (2006-07) after three Mid-Con Conference tourney championships (2005-07) and a pair of regular season league titles (2005-06). She also served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Colorado, and was a two-time all-league catcher for Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Fans from Duck opponents can catch multiple games online for a $12.95 automatically-renewing monthly membership (and should cancel the membership before the end of the month to prevent the next month's charge).
Live stats for all home and away contests are available for free via the softball schedule page by clicking on the page icon with the '1" in the far right media column.
PAC-10 PRESEASON POLL
In the annual Pacific-10 Conference Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, defending national champion UCLA and runner-up Arizona tied for first place after they each received 46 points and four-first-place votes. Arizona State followed in third place with 30 points, and was trailed by California (fourth-tie, 26), Washington (fourth-tie, 26), Stanford (sixth, 22), Oregon (seventh, 21) and Oregon State (eighth, 7).
THE ‘CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS’
The Pac-10’s moniker is validated by the fact the eight Pac-10 schools have combined to win 23 of the 28 softball NCAA national championships, including the last five by four different teams. Last year, the Pac-10 advanced six teams to the 16-team Super Regional level, including three of the eight World Series qualifiers (national champion UCLA, runner-up Arizona and defending champion Washington).
