Rovello Tabbed Northwest Region Freshman of the Year

EUGENE – Freshman Alex Rovello from the Oregon men’s tennis team received some recognition for his stellar inaugural collegiate season.
The Ducks’ top singles and doubles player was tabbed the Northwest region’s Freshman of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Rovello went 18-15 on the singles court and amassed a 14-12 doubles record in his first collegiate season. The Portland, Ore., native played all of his dual singles matches and all but one dual doubles match at the No. 1 position. In his first season, Rovello cracked in the ITA’s national singles rankings, jumping as high as 120th on the singles circuit on Feb. 14.
The Ducks’ freshman was able to finish with a winning singles record despite playing 12 of his 33 singles matches against nationally ranked opponents. He concluded his season by advancing to the second round of the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., two weeks ago.
Rovello is now a finalist with 11 other freshmen players across the country for the national award, which will be announced May 24.
