SETTING THE STAGE
Looking ahead to its second-ever Super Regional trip in as many years, the No. 11-ranked University of Oregon softball team (42-14, 11-10) heads to the ‘Swamp’ to take on No. 4 seed Florida (50-10) for a best-of-three series.
Seeking its second-ever Women’s College World Series trip (and fourth including the AIAW), UO stands as the #13 seed in the 64-team tourney field, and sports its third-most wins and second-best winning percentage ever (.750).
The past two months, Duck pitchers have held Pac-10 teams to a .241 hitting mark and hope to extend their success against the Gators who lead the nation this week in homers (1.78 p/g) and slugging (.589) and rank second in scoring (7.42 rpg) and 10th in hitting (.326).
The Ducks advanced to the Gainesville, Fla., Super Regional after last weekend’s wins over Albany (3-1), Fordham (2-0) and at Penn State (3-1) in the University Park Regional.
Winners of 12 of its last 15 games, UO wrapped the regular season with one of its greatest conference runs ever, and has claimed its last four series against the ‘Conference of Champions’.
In that span, UO sported 2-1 marks against last year’s NCAA champion and then-No.12 UCLA, at last year’s NCAA runner-up and then-No. 9 Arizona and vs. then-No. 10 Stanford, and also swept rival Oregon State.
UO’s third-place tie in the Pac-10 stood as its second-best league record and finish ever behind its 13-7, runner-up placing in 1989 (also the year of UO’s first WCWS trip), and best since the Pac-10 expanded to eight teams in 1993.
The winner of this weekend’s regional advances to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., Thursday-Wednesday, June 2-8, which is also double-elimination format.

RECENT DUCK ACTION
With its 3-1 win in the Regional finale at Penn State, the No. 11 Ducks topped the Nittany Lions for the third time in regional play, and raised its all-time series record to 5-0.
In days prior, UO beat Albany, 3-1, and Fordham, 2-0, in its first- and second-ever meetings with the America East and Atlantic-10 Conference champions. The Fordham win was particularly vital as UO beat returning first-team All-America first-team pitcher Jen Mineau and ended her 81 2/3-inning scoreless streak.
The weekend before in its regular season finale, UO went 2-1 against No. 12 UCLA and took the season series from the 11-time national champion for the second time in school history. Oregon’s 6-5 win in the opener ended a 15-game series losing streak dating back to 2005, while UCLA won the second game, 7-4. The Ducks bounced back for a 5-0 win in the Senior Day finale – only the second shutout suffered by the Bruins this year.
The weekend before at home, UO went 2-1 vs. then-No. 10 Stanford to end a 10-game series losing streak and took its first season series vs. the Cardinal since 2007. After Stanford won the first game, 4-1, UO came back with 2-0 and 4-2 wins.
In Tucson the weekend before, the Ducks took the season series with eight-time national champion and then-No. 9 Arizona for the third time in the rivalry dating back to 1984. Oregon won the openers, 2-0 and 12-6, then came back from a 5-0 deficit in the finale to narrowly fall, 7-6, to the returning national runner-up.
The weekend before, UO topped Oregon State, 7-1, 7-4 and 8-1, for its first Civil War sweep since 1994 (and fourth since the first series in 1974).
DUCK-GATOR SERIES HISTORY
Looking ahead to its fifth meeting all-time with Florida, UO is 2-2 in its prior early-season meetings that have all come since 2000.
In their most recent meeting, the Ducks lost to the Gators, 2-1 in its season opener in 2007, then rebounded with a school-record 18-game win streak en route to a 10th–place early-season national ranking.
UO topped then-No. 19 Florida, 5-4 and 7-2, in ’06 in season-opening wins by Amy Harris, and lost their first-ever meeting in 2000, 5-2.
RECENT DUCK HEROES
Last weekend in UO’s 3-0 run through the Penn State Regional, All-Pac-10 First team pick and sophomore Jessica Moore raised her all-time regional record to 5-0.
The Sutter, Calif., native retired every out in her three starts, struck out 25, walked three, and allowed 10 hits in her 21 innings. Among her game highlights, she one-hit Fordham and logged 11 strikeouts and no walks; posted nine strikeouts vs. Albany in the opener and allowed one walk and five hits; and struck out five vs. Penn State and allowed four hits.
At the plate, freshman catcher Alexa Peterson banged out five hits in her eight at-bats, and led the team in hitting (.625), hits (5), slugging (.750), on-base percentage (.667), doubles (1-tied) and RBI (3).
Among notable individual efforts at the plate:
- Senior Kaitlin Vitek went 2-for-3 with her first career triple in the opener vs. Albany.
- Freshman Kailee Cuico hit a game-winning, two run-homer in the fifth inning of the second game to end a 81 2/3-inning scoreless streak by Fordham’s first-team All-America pitcher Jen Mineau.
- Freshman Alexa Peterson went 3-for-3 with a game-winning two-run double in Oregon’s three-run sixth inning in the finale against Penn State.
Figuring in last weekend’s numbers, Moore climbed Duck career categories in strikeouts (third, 456), shutouts (seventh, 11-tied), wins (ninth, 40), innings (10th, 390) and appearances (10th, 80), and season lists in strikeouts (second, 218), wins (third, 24-tied) and starts (10th, 33).
With her sixth-inning double vs. Penn State, senior Monique Fuiava also climbed the career and season doubles charts (third, 38-tied / ninth, 13-tied).
SEASON SCORECARD
Overall this year, Oregon is 16-11 against teams that received NCAA invites with its marks against #1 seed Arizona State (1-2), #2 seed Alabama (0-1), #7 seed California (0-3), #8 seed Arizona (2-1), #12 seed Washington (1-2), #15 seed Stanford (2-1), #16 seed Texas A&M (1-0), Albany (1-0), BYU (1-0), Fordham (1-0), Illinois State (1-0), Louisiana-Lafayette (1-0), Pacific (1-1), Penn State (1-0) and Portland State (2-0).
Against top-20-ranked teams this year, UO is 12-11 with all of those squads qualifying for the postseason except for Hawai’i.
In its six, three-game series in Pac-10 play, UO swept Oregon State, 3-0; topped both then-No. 9 Arizona, then-No. 10 Cardinal and then-No. 12 UCLA, 2-1; went 1-2 vs. a pair of top-10 teams - then-No. 3 Arizona State (W 2-1, L, 2-0, 10-5) and at then-No. 6 Washington (W, 8-0; L, 3-2, 4-2); then dropped all three games at then-No. 13 Cal (5-0, 2-0, 5-2).
In other top-20 tilts, UO opened the year with wins vs. then-No. 16 BYU (5-0) and then-No. 19 Texas A&M (3-2). In Las Vegas the next week, it handed World Series returnee and then-No. 9 Hawai’i its first loss of the season (13-5, 5 innings). Two weeks later in Orlando, it split with then-No. 1 Alabama (10-0 loss, 5 innings) and then-No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette (5-2 win).

THIS WEEK’S OPPONENT INFO – No. 4 Seed Florida (50-10, SEC 21-7)
After starting the season with a 24-0 record, the Gators ranked first and second and nationally in the USA Softball / NFCA polls at the season’s midway point. However, it was swept afterwards in consecutive series by Georgia, 10-7, 13-5 and 5-1 in Gainesville, and at Kentucky 10-2, 7-6 and 9-2, and dropped to 11th and 10th, nationally. Since then, it went 17-2 to cap the regular season and climb back into the polls’ top three the last two weeks of the regular season. Its last game before the postseason was a 6-2 loss to NCAA qualifier Auburn in the SEC Tourney opening round.
Last weekend in the Gainesville Regional, Florida beat Bethune-Cookman (8-0) and went 2-1 vs. returning national champion UCLA (W 4-2, L 3-2, W 11-3). After the Bruins lost their starting catcher to an ACL tear in their opener, the Gators stole 21 bases in the three games (while their 1.21 steal per game average before the series ranked 81st nationally). SEC Player of the Year and senior left fielder Kelsey Bruder hit both of the team’s series homers in the finale, and freshman pitcher Hannah Rogers went 2-1 (14.2 innings, 16 SO, 2 BB, 21 H, 3 ER).
Looking at its season scorecard, UF is 24-10 against NCAA tournament qualifiers with wins vs. #2 seed Alabama (6-5, 3-2), #3 seed Texas (6-5), #14 seed Tennessee (4-2, 3-0, 7-2), Auburn (14-4, 8-2, 13-4), Bethune Cookman (8-0), Florida State (1-0), LSU (8-1, 5-0), North Carolina (3-0, 9-0, 10-0), North Dakota State (18-0, 9-0), Indiana (7-0), Jacksonville (7-0), San Diego State (4-2) and UCLA (4-1, 4-2, 11-3). Two weeks ago, Bruder was joined on the SEC First Team by sophomore right fielder Brittany Schutte. Freshman shortstop Cheyenne Coyle was also an All-SEC Freshman Team pick with Rogers.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
The Pac-10 continues to confirm its reputation as the Conference of Champions with three teams topping the national polls this season - Arizona, ASU and UCLA. UO is one of seven league members ranked top 15 nationally this week, and the eighth and final program (OSU) received a vote in the national poll a month ago.
Last week, ASU picked up the 64-team tourney’s #1 seed overall, and five of the other six Pac-10 teams selected were top-16 seeds - #7 California, #8 Arizona, #12 Washington, #13 Oregon and #15 Stanford. All five seeds advanced to the Super Regional stage, while returning national champion UCLA ultimately bowed out at Florida in a hard-fought seven-game regional.
With seven of its eight teams earning postseason bids, the Pac-10 had the highest percentage of postseason representation, ahead of the Big 12 (8 of 10), SEC (7 of 11) and Conference USA (5 of 9).
As expected before the season, the Pac-10 is unquestionably the deepest league in the nation. Since its early-April loss to Oregon, No. 1 ASU (53-6, 17-4) has won 16 of its last 18 games and captured its second-ever Pac-10 title. No. 5 California (40-9, 13-5) has won 13 of its last 14 and finished second in the league chase two games behind.
Oregon (42-14, 11-10) tied for third place with returning national runner-up and No. 10 Arizona (43-16, 11-10) - one game ahead of No. 11 Stanford (41-14, 10-11) who followed in fifth place.
12 UCLA (33-18, 9-12) and No. 14 Washington (37-14, 9-12) followed in a tie for sixth place, and Oregon State (eighth, 19-27, 2-19) rounded out the eight-team standings.
In the NCAA tourney regional action last week, Pac-10 teams sported a near-perfect 20-2 mark with only 11-time national champion UCLA (3-2) losing a contest(s), and the other teams all going 3-0.
MOORE LEADS THE WAY
Helping Oregon to wins in all six of her NCAA regional starts the past two seasons, All-Pac-10 First Team honoree and sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore has positioned the Ducks for many of its biggest wins this year, and here are various highlights from the past two months in reverse chronological order.
- Working her first 21-inning stretch in a 48-hour window in 2011, Moore notched all 21 outs in the regional finale vs. Penn State (5/22), struck out five, walked two, gave up four hits and one earned run. After UO scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead, she got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the inning’s bottom half with a pair of ground-ball outs, then set PSU down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
- In a NCAA regional second-game dual (5/21) vs. Fordham’s returning first-team All-American Jen Mineau, Moore logged her third one-hit complete game of the season, walked one, and struck out 11 – one off her season high.
- In the NCAA regional opener (5/20) vs. America East champion Albany, her nine strikeouts was her sixth effort of nine K’s or more this season, and she allowed only one walk, five hits and one earned run.
- In her win vs. then-No. 12 UCLA (5/12), Moore struck out 10 – her Pac-10 season high and most career-wise in a seven-inning league tilt. She also got her third save of the season in the 5-0 series clincher and regular season finale when she came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, and got a double play and ground out.
- In her 2-0 shutout of then-No. 10 Stanford (5/7), she struck out eight Cardinal batters – a team then-Pac-10 season high, then got the win in the 4-2 finale (5/8) after she struck out strike out six in the final 3 2/3 innings.
- In her 2-0 first-game shutout of then-No. 9 Arizona (4/29), she four-hit the nation’s ninth-leading hitting team (and added four strikeouts) to become the third Duck to ever beat the eight-time national champions in consecutive seasons.
- In her 2-1 win in the finale vs. then-No. 3 Arizona State (4/10), she one-hit the nation’s leader in hitting (.380) and second in runs per game (8.76).
- She picked up two of the team’s three wins vs. rival Oregon State (4/21, 4/23) in 7-1 and 8-1 wins.
- In the 8-0 series finale vs. then-No. 6 Washington (4/3), she struck out five and allowed five hits in her 6 2/3 innings, and helped UO tie its largest winning margin vs. the returning World Series advancers.
HOME SWEET HOWE
Sporting a 12-4 home record this year, UO ended 15- and 10-game losing streaks to then-No. 12 UCLA and then-No. 10 Stanford in early May, and took each season series for the first time since 2005 and ’07, respectively. In mid-April, UO celebrated its first series sweep of Oregon State since 1994, and third ever. Two weeks before, Oregon’s 2-1 win vs. then-No. 3 ASU in early April marked its seventh top-10 ranked Pac-10 victim at Howe Field the past two years. Earlier this season, UO went 4-0 in non-conference action vs. Weber State (6-1, 6-2) and Utah State (11-3, 9-0).
In 2010, the Ducks went 14-5 in the friendly confines after they rattled off a 12-0 start, then staked at least one win in every home series against the nation's top conference. Oregon's perfect early season run included its first-ever sweep of then-No. 13 Cal in April. The following weekend, UO beat its first top-ranked team, then-No. 1 Washington, since 2004, with its 4-0 victory against the returning national player of the year Danielle Lawrie. Oregon’s other league home victories came vs. then-No. 3 Arizona (2-1) in nine innings when Neena Bryant hit a two-run shot off another of the nation’s top pitchers, Kenzie Fowler.

Oregon again comfortably paced the Pac-10 this week in batters struck out (437), most stolen bases in a game (8 vs. North Texas) and most doubles in a game (a school-record 7 vs. Utah State), while senior Brittany Rumfelt and freshman Kailee Cuico tied for first in the league in relief appearances (21) and most doubles in a game (3), respectively.

POWER SURGE
With its six homers the last two weeks in the NCAA Regional and vs. then-No. 12 UCLA, UO reset its school season record, thanks to the 71 homers from 12 Duck players. That ratio (1.27 per game) ranks 10th nationally this week, and improved upon last year’s total (51) in 57 games by 13 players that ranked fifth-most overall in school history. From a historical standpoint, UO’s former school record (69) came in a 69-game season in 1999 (for a 1.0 per game ratio).
With her five homers the past month vs. then-No. 9 Arizona, then-No. 10 Stanford and then-No. 12 UCLA, junior Kelsey Chambers now has a career-high 13 homers this year – the sixth-best mark all-time for UO in a season – and her 26 career-wise is tied for seventh all-time for the Ducks. On the career list, senior Monique Fuiava stands sixth all-time for the Ducks on the career charts (27),and sophomore Samantha Pappas hit 11 homers last year and tied for eighth all-time for UO in a season.
Other Ducks that have cleared the fences in 2011 include senior Kaitlin Vitek (9), Fuiava (8), Pappas (8), freshman Kailee Cuico (7), junior Christie Nieto (6), freshmen Courtney Ceo (5) and Alexa Peterson (5), sophomore Kaylan Howard (4), junior Lindsey Chambers (3), and sophomores Jessica Moore (2) and Allie Burger (1).
Five Ducks have connected on grand slams this year:
- senior Monique Fuiava in a win at Portland State.
- junior Christie Nieto vs. then-No. 9 Hawai’i as a pinch-hitter.
- sophomore Samantha Pappas and freshman Kailee Cuico in separate games vs. UNLV.
- sophomore Kaylan Howard in a 6-5 win over then-No. 12 UCLA.
In prior years, Fuiava connected on a grand slam as a freshman vs. Cal Poly, and last year a pair of then-freshmen turned the trick - Pappas vs. Idaho State and Kaylan Howard in a NCAA regional win at then-No. 7 Georgia Tech.
AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH
Under head coach Mike White’s tutelage, the Duck pitching staff is on another near season-record pace for strikeouts (437, 367.0 innings (1.19 K/Inning)). The current record belongs to the same four-person staff last year (470, 381.2 innings (1.23 K/Inning)) that easily topped the former mark (394, 432.2 innings, 57 games) set by White’s former crew in 2004. For comparison’s sake last year, the Ducks ranked 33rd nationally in batting (.299) and 34th in slugging (.460), and 47th in home runs per game (0.89).
On the individual front in ‘10, outfielder Allie Burger ranked 72nd in batting (.387), and right fielder Samantha Pappas stood 82nd nationally in batting (.383), 88th in RBI (0.84 per game), 90th on-base percentage (.472), 123rd in slugging (.641) and 131st in home runs (11).
Jessica Moore was equally easy to find last season on the final NCAA pitching stat charts in strikeouts (36th, 8.7 per 7 inning average), total strikeouts (46th, 238), ERA (52nd, 1.86) and fewest hits allowed (160th, 6.38 per 7 innings). The Sutter, Calif., native ranked 11th nationally in saves (4), and was followed by teammate Brittany Rumfelt (101st-t, 2).
IN THE POLLS
In last week’s 15th edition of the national polls, the Ducks received its highest rankings of the season with its No. 11 and No. 12 pollings in the USA Softball and the NFCA editions.
Oregon has now been ranked for 26 straight weeks by USA Softball and 19 straight polls by the NFCA. Among this week's two editions, 10 Duck foes were ranked top 25 (USA SB / NFCA) - Arizona State (1/1), Alabama (3/4), Florida (5/3), California (5/7), Arizona (9/10), Stanford (12/11), Washington (14/15), UCLA (16/14), Texas A&M (17/18) and Louisiana-Lafayette (24/25). Two other Duck opponents – BYU and Pacific - received vote(s) in at least one poll.
Overall in both editions, Pac-10 champion Arizona State ranked first for the fourth straight week after it went 2-1 at home vs. Stanford the last weekend of the regular season.
Among other teams in this week’s top five:
- No. 2/2 Michigan (35-3) head steady after it twice beat Michigan State by 8-0 scores and clinched the Big 10 title.
- No. 4/8 Missouri won the Big 12 title after it went 3-0 with wins over Oklahoma State, 5-1, and Iowa State, 8-2, 8-1.
- No. 5/5 Tennessee won the SEC Tournament over No. 8/9 Georgia, 6-5, on an eighth-inning walk-off homer.
- No. 3/4 Alabama and No. 5/3 Florida remained in the top five after failing to make the SEC title game.

DOUBLE YOUR FUN
The Ducks again sport a pair of twins on their roster in 2011 and both have played key roles for the Ducks the past three seasons.
The identical junior pair of Kelsey Chambers and Lindsey Chambers have combined for 35 homers (26 / 9) in their careers, including 13 and three, respectively, this year. They saw the most action among newcomers as freshmen when Kelsey started in right field the first half of ‘09, then started 24 games in the remainder at second base (and had two more at shortstop), while Lindsey’s starts came in the left side of the infield with 18 at third base and 22 at shortstop. Last year, Kelsey Chambers was tabbed an All- Pac-10 Honorable Mention, and this year ranks sixth all-time in homers hit in a season and seventh career-wise (26).
PICKS OF THE PAC-10
Picking up their first Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors two weeks ago, freshman catcher Alexa Peterson and senior pitcher Brittany Rumfelt were rewarded after Oregon’s history-making 2-1 series win against returning national champion and then-No. 12 UCLA.
Peterson was the only Duck to hit safely in all three games, and for the weekend paced the team in batting (.714), hits (5) and on-base percentage (.750), and stood second in slugging (.714) and third in total bases (5).
Rumfelt won her first career start vs. the Bruins on Senior Day; struck out seven in her six innings; and helped Oregon become the second team this year to blank the Bruins in the 5-0 decision. For the weekend, she paced the team in ERA (1.83), wins (1-tied), strikeout-walk ratio (1.83:1) and opposing batting average (.148).
In early March, sophomore Jessica Moore became the second Duck hurler to stake multiple Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors in her career.
The Sutter, Calif., native went 3-0 the week before in the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. In the four-game tourney, she led UO in wins (3), strikeouts (19), ERA (0.00), innings (16.0) and opponent batting average (.115); and allowed three hits or less in all three of her starts
Last year, Moore picked up her first honor after she helped the team to a 6-0 record vs. Idaho State, Seattle and at Portland State. Altogether that week, Moore went 3-0, averaged more than two strikeouts per inning (29 / 14 innings), and led the team in strikeouts (29), opposing batting average (.082), ERA (0.00), innings (14.0), appearances (3) and starts (2). She also combined with Samantha Skillingstad on a five-inning perfect game in the second Idaho State meeting, also the 18th no-hitter in school history.
The trio are the fourth, fifth and sixth Ducks on the current roster to honored (with 2010 honorees Allie Burger, Monique Fuiava and Samantha Pappas), and all-time Oregon has claimed 36 softball POW honors since 1989.
HONOR ROLL
Last week, eight Ducks were honored to the All-Pac-10 Teams and four enjoyed nods on the NFCA Pacific All-Region squads.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore became the third Duck pitcher to ever land on the All-Pac-10 First Team, while senior Monique Fuiava received her first All-Pac-10 Second-Team commendation. Four others added honorable mention status - freshman Courtney Ceo, sophomore Samantha Pappas and seniors Brittany Rumfelt and Kaitlin Vitek.
Ceo and Alexa Peterson were also tabbed to the All-Pac-10 Freshman Team, while Kailee Cuico was an honorable mention.
Regional coaches took similar notice as Moore and Fuiava made their first appearances on the NFCA Pacific All-Region First Team, as did freshman second baseman Courtney Ceo and catcher Alexa Peterson on the Second Team.
Dating back to 1988, UO has now staked 15 first-team and 23 second-team regional-team laurels, and this year’s quartet tied its second-best tally ever (and was one shy of its all-time all-time high (5) from 1989). On the All-Pac-10 rolls, Oregon has racked up 19 first-team honors and 35 second-team selections.
NEW TO THE FOLD
The Ducks will say farewell to three seniors after this season, yet will welcome a six-person newcomer class next fall. The group of prep seniors includes pitcher Karissa Hovinga (Ralston, Neb.), outfielders Alyssa Gillespie (Hillsboro, Ore.), Sara Goodrum (Red Mountain, Ariz.) and Janie Takeda (Placentia, Calif.), and infielders Hannah Melick (Auburn, Wash.) and Jamie Rae Sullivan (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
An all-state first-team pick in 2009 and ’10 and second-team choice in ’08 for Glencoe High School, Gillespie helped lead her team to the state title the last three seasons, and also played for the Northwest Blaze club team, the 2009 ASA national tourney champions.
Goodrum was an All-Class 5A state team honorable mention as a junior, and a 5A All-Region East Valley pick the last two seasons for Red Mountain High School.
Hovinga has been an all-class all-state first-team choice the last three seasons, and helped her Pappillion team to the state title last fall and also as a freshman, to go along with four district titles and two conference crowns (2008, ’09).
Melick was a South Puget Sound League First-Team pick as a freshman and junior, and Second-Team choice as a sophomore for Auburn High School, and has played for the Washington Ladyhawks club that placed third in the 2010 Champions Cup.
Sullivan was a Sunset-League First-Team pick as a junior for Marina High School and an All-CIF Second-Team choice as a sophomore, while her Firecrackers 18 Gold club team won the Canada Cup and Colorado Fireworks Tournament in 2009 and 2010.
Takeda is a three-time all-league first-team pick for El Dorado High School and was her team's MVP last spring and an All-County Second-Team honoree, while her OC Batbusters club took third place in the 2010 Premier Girls Softball Tournament.
SKED CRED
The Ducks faced another grueling regular season slate in 2011 with 25 of their 55 games against 13 returning 2010 NCAA qualifiers. That list is a who’s who in collegiate softball, and includes last year’s national champion and runner-up (UCLA / Arizona); two more Women’s College World Series qualifiers (Hawai’i, Washington); five additional regional champions (Alabama, ASU, BYU, California, Louisiana-Lafayette); two more regional finalists (North Carolina, Texas A&M); and two additional tourney qualifiers (Stanford, Virginia).
Last week, UO held steady at 15th nationally in the NCAA RPI rankings among the 289 programs nationwide, and current collegiate softball RPI rankings are available at the http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2011WSBrpi1.html website.
Glancing at the preseason NFCA and USA Softball polls, 13 of UO’s 32 opponents this season were ranked, including five in the top 10. That list includes UCLA (1/2), Arizona (2/1), Alabama (6/3), Hawai’i (8/13), Washington (10/11), California (12/12), Arizona State (13/10), BYU (16/20), Louisiana-Lafayette (17/21), Stanford (20/18), Texas A&M (21/19), Illinois (24/24) and North Carolina (25/-), and two others received votes – Illinois State and Oregon State.
TOP DUCK PROFILE
Second-year head coach Mike White is widely regarded as one of finest-ever U.S. National Team players and pitching mentors. The 2009 International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame selection, also is well-known in the area as an integral part of two of Oregon’s greatest teams in 2003 and ‘04 and one of the West Coast’s top prep coaches.
Sporting a program-best 69.0 winning percentage as its head coach, White has compiled a 78-35 mark already after leading the Ducks to its first-ever Super Regional trips the last two seasons.
In his first year at the helm, Oregon went 36-21 in 2010 – nearly reverse the previous year’s mark (16-34) – and staked its most Pac-10 wins (8) since its 10 in 2003 and ’04. Oregon beat five different Pac-10 teams – No. 1 Washington, No. 3 Arizona, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 13 California (3 times and its first-ever sweep in the series) and OSU (2) – for the first time since topping all seven in ’04.
The Ducks opened the postseason by upsetting then-No. 7 ranked / No. 8 seeded Georgia Tech twice in Atlanta in the regional, and ultimately ended the year ranked 14th nationally in both polls.
In his prior Duck stint as an assistant coach, the Ducks lowered their ERA from 3.01 the season prior to his arrival to 2.12 and 1.68, respectively, while its strikeout totals of 347 and 394 – then the best two in school history – far outdistanced its 223 total from 2002.
His first-year pupils included then-freshman Amy Harris who set a single-season strikeout record (180) his first season, while senior Andrea Vidlund led the nation in saves and set a Pac-10 record (11). The next season, newcomer Ani Nyhus was an All-Pac-10 First Team and NCAA Regional All-Tournament choice and two-time conference pitcher of the week. The junior college transfer notched 20 wins (25-12), rewrote the program’s single-season strikeout record (202) and pitched a no-hitter vs. Utah State. Catcher Jenn Poore was also an All-American and All-Pac-10 Second Team honoree in ’04 and drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league.
Since then, he continued to live in Eugene with his family and remained active as an assistant coach for one of the nation’s top programs at Marist High School during the 2008-09 seasons. The program ended 2009 ranked 22nd nationally by USA Today and won consecutive 4A state titles after identical 29-1 seasons. He also coached the Northwest Thunder and Northwest Bullets Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) youth club teams and served as a private instructor for various elite players of all levels.
As a player, the New Zealand native became a U.S. citizen in 1994 and helped the two national teams claim two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze in his four trips with New Zealand and two with the United States
In 2000, he helped guide the USA to a bronze medal in the World Championships when he went 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In 1999, the U.S. won the silver medal at the Pan Am Games, and he was 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 35 strikeouts. He also played on three silver medal Pan-American Games teams in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Among other honors, the multiple Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) MVP pitcher and All-American helped lead teams to five ASA national titles and five ISC World Club Championships, and was the 2002 ASA Player of the Year.
MORE LOVE FOR THE DUCK STAFF
Oregon’s highly-regarded staff also includes three other talented coaches that sport equally impressive playing resumes.
Second-year Duck coach and former UCLA All-American Lisa Dodd has earned similar respect as a Nevada assistant coach after she helped the Wolf Pack to a WAC Conference title, top-20 rankings and NCAA bid in 2008. As a pitcher and infielder, the 2007 NFCA Second-Team All-American starred on Bruin teams that claimed three straight WCWS trips and a Pac-10 title in 2006. She went on to play professionally in Italy in 2007 and ’08, while as a prep she was tabbed the 2003 Gatorade National Prep Player of the Year.
White first shared the field with first-year assistant coach Blake Miller when the latter was a top infielder for the U.S. National Team. As a collegiate coach the past 10 years, Miller has worked with two All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans, and guided four teams to regional bids and one Junior College World Series trip. His resume includes stops as a head coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville the past three seasons and at Darton College (2006-07) and as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State (2005), Missouri Western State (2004) and Mesa State (2001-03).
The Ducks rounded out one of their most experienced coaching staffs ever with the addition of Julie Strand as a volunteer assistant coach. The Eugene native joined the program after serving the last two seasons as the head coach at Southern Utah (2009-10) and four seasons as its assistant coach (2005-08). In that stretch, she helped the Thunderbirds advance twice to the NCAA Tournament (2006-07) after three Mid-Con Conference tourney championships (2005-07) and a pair of regular season league titles (2005-06). She also served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Colorado, and was a two-time all-league catcher for Colorado State University-Pueblo.

PAC-10 PRESEASON POLL
In the annual Pacific-10 Conference Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, defending national champion UCLA and runner-up Arizona tied for first place after they each received 46 points and four-first-place votes. Arizona State followed in third place with 30 points, and was trailed by California (fourth-tie, 26), Washington (fourth-tie, 26), Stanford (sixth, 22), Oregon (seventh, 21) and Oregon State (eighth, 7).
THE ‘CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS’
The Pac-10’s moniker is validated by the fact the eight Pac-10 schools have combined to win 23 of the 29 softball NCAA national championships, including the last five by four different teams. Last year, the Pac-10 advanced six teams to the 16-team Super Regional level, including three of the eight World Series qualifiers (national champion UCLA, runner-up Arizona and defending champion Washington).

TICKET INFORMATION
In 2011, the Ducks will host 16 home games on 14 dates at Howe Field. Varsity sport tickets are available through the Oregon Athletic Ticket Office (1-800-WEB-FOOT, 541 346-4461 locally), and tickets are for general admission seating are $5 for Adults and $3 for Children (2-18) and Seniors (62+). Groups of 10 or more that arrange for tickets in advance can purchase GA tickets for $2 each. Current UO Students that show valid UO ID’s at the entry gate will receive general admission at no charge.
