EUGENE - With finals week just around the corner, the University of Oregon volleyball team capped the spring slate with its year-end awards dinner.
A trio of Ducks were honored with its Most Valuable Player (Heather Meyers), Most Improved (Ariana Williams) and Thunder and Lightning (Alaina Bergsma) Awards.
All three honors were voted on by the team, and the last award was based on both on- and off-court contributions.
A senior outside hitter from Temecula, Calif., Meyers picked up her first All-Pac-10 honor after she stood seventh nationally in aces (0.56) and 33rd in points (4.57) per set with averages that stood first and sixth in the league, respectively. She also led the team in kills (3.72 p/s, 402) and hitting (.301), and stood second in assists (0.54 p/s) and double-doubles (6). Among other notable stats, she had three +20-kill matches, eight +.400 hitting totals, and a conference-season high total of six aces in three matches.
A freshman middle blocker from Riverside, Calif., Williams ranked second on the squad in blocking (0.58 p/s) and hitting (.286). She hit +.400 in nine matches, logged six double-digit kill figures, and ranked top two for UO in matches led in hitting (first-tie, 9) and blocks (second, 13). Her season-high .722 hitting mark vs. NCAA tourney returnee Florida International paced the team in ’10 and tied for 13th-best all-time for UO.
A sophomore outside hitter from Chandler, Ariz., Bergsma posted double-digit kills totals in 18 matches, four of the team's top nine kill totals (21, 20, 19x2) and 13 +.300 hitting marks. In late September, she became UO’s fourth AVCA National Player of the Week in as many years with her totals in wins vs. then-No. 7 Washington (season highs of 21 kills, 23 points and .559 hitting) and WSU (12 kills, .417). On the season, she ranked third on the team in hitting (.270) and kills (3.14 p/s).
Last year, the Ducks opened the 2010 campaign with a school record 14-match win streak en route to a season-high national ranking of 11th. The young Duck squad ended the season with only one upperclassmen on its active squad - Meyers - yet still amassed a 19-11 record. The Ducks just missed a record fifth straight NCAA bid and became the first Pac-10 school with +17 wins to not be selected to the 64-team NCAA field.
