Ducks Score Two Late to Beat OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Maryn Beutler and Marissa Everett each found the back of the net in the last 10 minutes to lift the Oregon soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Oregon State Friday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED: It seemed like the Ducks were knocking at the door the entire match and they finally broke through when Maryn Beutler received a pass from Kyra Fawcett in the 83rd minute. There, the redshirt junior put it home from 15 yards out to tie the match up at 1-all.
Then just four minutes later, Fawcett sent a through ball into the box from the left side of the field. Marlo Sweatman controlled it and wound up to take a shot that was blocked. The deflection went right to freshman Marissa Everett who went to the upper right corner to score her third game-winning goal of the season.
SCORING CHANCES: With OSU starting their senior goalkeeper for her final home match instead of the regular starter Bella Geist, the Ducks jumped out on the offensive attack immediately. Kira Wagoner forced her to make Melanie Trumbell to make her first save of the season in the opening 62 seconds and UO continued to put pressure on as Marissa Everett and Maryn Beutler had shots on the goal in the 15th and 16th minutes.
Then, Oregon had a plethora of chances in the 2nd half to tie the match up at 1-all. In the 61st minute, Kristen Parr appeared to have her first goal of the season when she headed in the ball off a free kick and Trumbell made the save but the ball was past the goal line. That score was then waved off as Parr was ruled offside. Then less than 15 minutes later, Kyra Fawcett put a high-arching shot on target that was saved as Trumbell reached up to the crossbar to stop it. The resulting corner kick service gave Parr another shot, but this time she was just off the mark, hitting the post.
With Oregon getting chance after chance, the Ducks finally broke through with Beutler’s score in the 83rd minute.
ROAD WIN: Today’s win was the first time this season that the Ducks have won away from Papé Field. It’s also the first time UO has won in Corvallis since 2003.
QUOTES:
Head Coach Kat Mertz:
“I’m very proud of my Ducks today. It was a hard-fought team victory and we pressed hard and played some good soccer. Both goals by Maryn and Marissa were fantastic and it’s even better that they came within four minutes of each other. In goal, Halla made some big-time saves that kept up in the lead. I’m very happy for our seniors and for ending our season with two great wins.”
DÉJÀ VU, PART 2: Last Sunday, Oregon defeated Washington off a golden goal in overtime to take the match 1-0 for the second straight year. Today, the Ducks beat the Beavers 2-1 in the season-finale with the go-ahead goal coming late in the game. It’s the exact same fashion that UO dropped OSU last year, although that victory came at home while today’s win was on the road.
BACK-TO-BACK: The Ducks have now dropped the Huskies and Beavers in back-to-back years. It's just the third time in program history that UO has won against both Washington and OSU in the same season with the other two times coming in 2006 and last year.
