Sand Volleyball to Open in Hawaii

EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon sand volleyball team will begin its second season next week with Frankie Shebby and Kacey Nady taking part in a special tournament at the birthplace of the sport.
The duo will participate in The “Dad” Center Founder’s Cup in Waikiki, Hawaii, March 21-22 in honor of George David “Dad”, the inventor of beach volleyball.
History tells us that in 1915, on a still day with no surf, Dad brought a net and balls to the sands of the Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki. Little did they know that day, but Dad and Duke Kahanamoku were making history as the first people in the world to play volleyball on the beach.
UCLA, Cal State Northridge, Oregon State, Chaminade and USC will compete for the Championships on the sands of Waikiki where the sport was first played 100 years ago.
The tournament will be the first of the season, while the rest of the Oregon volleyball team will play in its first match, April 4 in a neutral-site match in Portland, Ore., against Washington.
The Ducks’ season will see more Pac-12 schools in the schedule as the sport begins to grow. Oregon will travel to Stanford for a tournament April 10-11, and will head to Corvallis for a Civil War matchup against Oregon State, April 15.
The last scheduled matches of the season are in Boise, Idaho where Oregon will have a doubleheader against Arizona and Boise State, April 24.
