Ducks Add First Recruiting Wave

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field team added its first wave of the 2016 freshman class, as head coach Robert Johnson announced five additions to the Duck program, Thursday.
The group includes nationally ranked student-athletes in the distances, jumps, throws and sprints. The five soon-to-be Ducks hail from four states and include Matthew Maton (Bend, Ore.), Travonn White (Phoenix, Ariz.), Tanner Anderson (Spokane, Wash.), Cameron Stone (Sacramento, Calif.) and Ronna Stone (San Jose, Calif.).
“We are really excited to announce the first group of newcomers who will join our program next year,” said head coach Robert Johnson. “Our coaching staff looks across the country to find the best, and I think we found that in this group. As has been the case over the last couple years, we will continue to add to this list throughout the spring and summer as we look to build our 2016 class.”
The Ducks posted women’s No. 1-ranked recruiting classes in 2011, 2014 and 2015. The men’s team, ranked second last season, has received top three nationally-ranked recruiting classes during five of the past six years.
Matthew Maton (Summit High School / Bend, Ore.)
Personal Bests: 1,500 -3:49.38; 3,000 – 8:18.66; 5,000 – 15:54.61
Maton has won six 5A Oregon state track and cross country tiles, winning both the 1,500 and 3,000 at the state track and field championships as a sophomore and junior, running 3:49.38 at the meet in 2014. In Cross Country, he won the 5A state title in 2013 and 2014 after finishing second in 2012. Maton took third at Foot Locker Nationals as a junior and second at Nike BorderClash as a senior. In 2014, he broke Galen Rupp’s legendary Oregon High School State Cross Country record, running 14:45 and finishing almost a minute ahead of second place. His sister, Ashley is a junior on the Oregon track and field team and his mother was the 1988 NCAA Cross Country Champion while running for Indiana.
Travonn White (Central Arizona / Phoenix, Ariz.)
Personal Bests: Long Jump – 25-10; 200 – 22.16;
White will come to Oregon from Central Arizona Junior College where he was the NJCAA Division I National Champion in the long jump in 2014. He was also part of the 4x100 relay team which finished second at the national meet. At the 2015 NJCAA Indoor Championships, White took third in the long jump. He finished fourth at the World Junior Championships at Hayward Field in the summer of 2014. In High School, White was the Arizona Division I State Champion in the long jump in 2012 and finished third in 2013 for Mountain Pointe High School.
Tanner Anderson (North Central High School / Spokane, Wash.)
Personal Bests: 1,600 – 4:13.00; 3,200 – 8:56.80
Anderson won the 2014 Nike Cross Nationals after placing third in 2013. He won the Washington 3A Title in the 3,200 as a sophomore in 2013 in 9:01.79. Anderson placed second in the event at the state meet as a junior in 2014 despite running a personal best of 8:56.80. Anderson also took fourth in the mile as a junior with a personal best of 4:1300. In cross country, He won the 3A WIAA State Cross Country Championships as a junior and a senior after finishing third as a sophomore.
Cameron Stone (Sheldon High School / Sacramento, Calif.)
Personal Bests: 400 – 46.99; 200 – 22.50
Stone finished seventh at the California State Championships in the 400 as a junior, running 47.67 in the finals. Earlier in the season, he ran a 46.99 at the CIF-SJS Division I Championships, setting a personal best in the event.
Ronna Stone (Valley Christian High School / San Jose, Calif.)
Personal Bests: Shot Put – 42-11.75; Discus – 153-8
Stone threw 153-8 while finishing second in the discus at the Arcadia Invitational this season, which ranks fifth in the United States. She finished fifth in the discus at the CIF CCS Finals in 2014 and 15th at the state championships in the shot put. Stone threw a personal best of 42-11.75 in the shot put this season while winning the Avis Kelley meet.
