Mariota, Takeda Earn Pac-12 Medals

Football quarterback Marcus Mariota and softball outfielder Janie Takeda are Oregon’s recipients of the Pac-12’s Tom Hansen Conference Medals for 2014-15, the conference announced Tuesday.
Given annually since 1960-61 and named for the former Pac-12 commissioner, conference medals are awarded based on performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Mariota became Oregon’s first winner of the Heisman Trophy last fall. He rewrote UO record books while leading the Ducks to a 13-2 season that included Pac-12 and Rose Bowl titles, and an appearance in the first College Football Playoff National Championship.
Takeda enjoyed similar success, becoming Oregon’s career leader in hits, runs, doubles and stolen bases while helping lead the Ducks to the Women’s College World Series. She and her fellow seniors contributed to 202 victories, the most ever in a four-year span at Oregon.
Mariota and Takeda will be featured along with medal winners from the other 11 conference schools on Pride of the Pac, a Pac-12 Networks special that will run July 9 at 7 p.m.
