Injury & Illness Frequently Asked Questions BACK TO ATHLETIC MEDICINE HOMEPAGE
What do I do if I get hurt?
If you are injured, regardless of how, come see your Athletic Trainer in the Treatment Center. Your Athletic Trainer will assess the problem and coordinate the necessary care. If a referral is required, one will be made to the appropriate medical specialist.
What about follow-up after the injury?
The outcome of the treatment will be improved if you follow-up with your Athletic Trainer. Be sure to check in regularly and complete all instructions so you can recover as quickly as possible. If you not are improving, let your Athletic Trainer know! If we don’t see you, it may be assumed you are doing fine.
Any limitations in your training, lifting, and conditioning should be discussed with your Athletic Trainer. We can help with communicating restrictions or modifications with your coaches and strength coaches.
Who should I see if I get sick?
Your Athletic Trainer is also your point of contact for illnesses. If you are sick, contact your Athletic Trainer for guidance. If you wake up sick and think it’s likely you need to miss practice, it is your responsibility to contact your Athletic Trainer first thing that morning. We can help determine your status for practice/game, referral to the team physician and relay that information to your coaches.
When is the doctor available?
Our Team Physicians, Dr. Greg Skaggs and Dr. Craig Davidson, offer clinic hours for injuries and illnesses Monday-Friday at both the Len Casanova Treatment Center and Matthew Knight Arena. In addition, the UO has access to many physician specialists (including orthopedics, dentistry, optometry, neurology, etc.). If you feel you need to see one of our team physicians, contact your Athletic Trainer for an appointment.
What if I get hurt after athletic training room hours?
If it is a life threatening emergency, call 911 or Public Safety Emergency 346-6666 (if on campus), and proceed as instructed. If it is a non-life threatening emergency, and you are unable to get a hold of your Athletic Trainer for instructions, you have a few choices:
| University Student Health Center | 541-346-2770 | 1590 E 13th Ave., Eugene |
| Eugene Urgent Care (multiple locations) | 541-636-3473 | 598 E 13th Ave., Eugene |
| Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend | 541-222-7300 | 3333 RiverBend Dr., Springfield |
| Sacred Heart Medical Center University District | 541-686-7300 | 1255 Hilyard St., Eugene |
Contact your Athletic Trainer as soon as possible following any outside care so we can coordinate any follow-up care that may be necessary.
What if I want to see a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist, or other alternative therapy practitioner?
The Athletic Trainers at UO take pride in our advanced knowledge base and clinical skills. We are constantly striving to learn new techniques and therapies that allow us to provide the highest quality of care to our student-athletes. We recognize our limitations and believe alternative therapies can be helpful with certain injuries or conditions. If and when it is deemed appropriate by your Athletic Trainer and team physician, a referral will be made.
At no time is it appropriate for a coach to coordinate medical care for a student-athlete. If you feel you have a need or have been advised to pursue outside therapy, contact your Athletic Trainer for assistance. We will evaluate your need and determine the most appropriate direction to proceed. Communication is essential for coordinating your medical care. The medical staff should be informed if you are seeking outside therapy so coordination of care can be established. This is in your best interest, so duplication of therapies can be avoided and minimize confusion regarding your participation status. UO Athletics is unable to be financially responsible for your care unless you are referred by an Athletic Medicine staff member.
Are my medical records confidential?
UO Athletic Medicine staff will never discuss your condition or treatment with anyone without your permission. The Athletic Medicine staff is a team of healthcare professionals consisting of Athletic Trainers, physicians, nutritionists, and licensed counselors who have your best interest in mind. We often work together to treat the entire individual, not just the injury/illness. Upon evaluation of your injury/illness, we will discuss with you who needs to be aware of your current situation.
