Andrus & Looney in 5th & 6th in Oregon Invite Hep/Dec 1st Day
EUGENE - The University of Oregon men’s and women’s track teams got a head start on the Oregon Invitational Thursday in first-day action in the Oregon Invitational heptathlon and decathlon.
At the end of the women’s heptathlon’s first four events, redshirt senior Abby Andrus ranked fifth with 3,072 points, and trailed Wichita State’s Iveta Grunte (first, 3,322) and Koy Webb (second, 3,221), unattached entrant Suzanne Krings (third, 3,198) and Montana’s Carla Breuer (fourth, 3,144). Other scorers Thursday included Wichita State’s Lindsay Eck (sixth, 3,040), Portland’s Julie Elliott (seventh, 3035), Idaho’s Mary Ann Graves (eighth, 2,817), Wichita State’s Emily Green (ninth, 2,741) and Jessica Bowser (10th, 2,677) and USC's Shannon Lewallen (11th, 2,200).
Andrus posted first day marks of 14.15 in the 100 hurdles, 5-3 3/4 in the high jump, 34-7 in the shot put, and 26.07 in the 200. Her hurdle time ranked second in the hurdles, her high jump ranked fourth, and her shot put and 200 stood fifth.
"It was a decent first day, but the way I’ve been practicing I was hoping for more points so it is still a little frustrating," Andrus said. "My 100 hurdles was pretty good; I was a little close to the bar and a little fast in the high jump; I got a little too excited with my shot put warmups and fouled my first two attempts because of it; and my 200 was slow."
Andrus’s tally (3,072) was only 46 points off her first day personal best (3,108) that came in last year’s Pac-10 Championships where she ultimately finished third with her current personal best (5,303). In last year’s Oregon Invite, she scored 2,979 points en route to a then-personal best tally of 5,152 points that placed her second in the competition’s final standings.
The day’s top heptathlon marks in each event belonged to Lindsay Eck (100 hurdles, 14.11; 200, 24.98), Carla Breuer (shot put, 42-8 3/4) and Iveta Grunte (high jump, 5-9 3/4).
The heptathletes return Friday for second-day action in the long jump (2 pm), javelin (3:10 pm) and 800 (4:30 pm).
On the men’s side, Duck freshman and unattached entrant Ben Looney ranked sixth in the men’s decathlon (3,404) behind unattached entrants Bryan Anderson (first, 3,955) and Andrew Levin (second, 3,845), Idaho’s Jerome Richardson (third, 3,837), Nike’s Santiago Lorenzo (fourth, 3,831) and Wichita State’s Paul Speer (fifth, 3,789). Other event competitors included Idaho’s Ryan Long (seventh, 3,387), Washington’s Doug Blaty (eighth, 3,282), Idaho’s Marcus Luckstead (ninth, 3,279), Wichita State’s Jason Conley (10th, 2,905) and Matthew Wartick (11th, 2,761) and unattached entrant Adam Bork (12th, 1,381).
Individual event leaders included former Oregon NCAA champion Santiago Lorenzo (long jump, 23-2), unattached entrant Bryan Anderson (shot put 44-5 1/2, high jump 6-8 1/4) and Wichita State’s Paul Speer (11.15, w:1.5).
Looking ahead to Friday’s final day decathlon action, upcoming events include the 110 hurdles (noon), discus (12:50 pm), pole vault (2:10 pm), javelin (3:50 pm) and 1,500 (5 pm). The women’s and men’s 10,000 meter races will follow Friday evening at 7:15 and 8 pm, respectively. Admission to all of Friday’s events is free to the public.
