The 2020-21 season is Xavi Lopez's seventh with the Oregon women’s basketball program, and fourth as an assistant coach.
Lopez works with Oregon’s guards and assists in opponent scouting and recruiting, and he also heads the Ducks' international recruiting efforts. UO currently boasts one player from Germany and one from Australia on the 2020-21 roster, and a history of recruiting high-level international players. Spanish native Maite Cazorla, was selected 23rd overall in the 2019 WNBA draft and German native Satou Sabally, was selected No. 2 overall in the 2020 WNBA draft.
Lopez has helped guide the Ducks to three straight Pac-12 regular season championship and the program's first ever Final Four appearance in 2018-19. Oregon's guards were once again one of the top shooting groups in the nation. UO led the NCAA in three-point shooting in 2018-19, hitting 41.5 percent from deep as a team. Erin Boley (12th, 43.0 percent), Sabrina Ionescu (14th, 42.9 percent) and Satou Sabally (23rd, 41.1 percent) all ranked in the top-25 of the country in three-point percentage individually. The Ducks also ranked fourth in overall shooting at 50.1 percent and were 20th in the country in free throw percentage at 76.6 percent.
Lopez was promoted to assistant by head coach Kelly Graves prior to the start of the 2017-18 season. Lopez helped Oregon to both Pac-12 regular season and Pac-12 Tournament championships in his first season on the bench as the Ducks advanced to a second straight Elite Eight. Oregon’s guards shot 40.1 percent from three-point range last year, good for third in the NCAA. Lexi Bando ranked third in the country and first in the Pac-12, shooting 45.7 percent from three while Ionescu ranked 10th in the NCAA and second in the Pac-12, shooting 43.8 percent from deep.
Lopez played for Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore., before finishing his collegiate career at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, Calif. He graduated from Point Loma Nazarene in 2007 and started a six-year professional career in Spain, playing for Bilbao Basket in the prestigious ACB Spanish League among other clubs.
Lopez is originally from Barcelona, Spain. He is married to Megan Lopez and they have a newborn baby girl named Katie.
