Cat Rainone concluded her second season leading the Oregon defense after joining the staff on August 24, 2021.
The Ducks showed tremendous growth on the defensive end in 2023. Oregon had their lowest goals against average (12.72) since 2018, holding the most opponents under 10 goals (4) since that season, while producing the first three shutout quarters since the 2022 rule change. The Ducks also finished with the most caused turnovers (112) since 2017 and the best clearing percentage (.866) since 2019. Logan Gierke became the first player in program history to earn Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in the season opener against Xavier. Graduate transfer Margot Hotham led the Ducks in caused turnovers (23) and ground balls (28) in 2023. The defender finished the season tied for the 10th most caused turnovers in a single season with the most by a Duck since 2017. Hotham became the first Oregon player to lead the team in caused turnovers and ground balls since Nikki Puszcz in 2014. Junior goalie Cassidy Eckert currently sits first in program history with 7.47 saves per game and the fifth-most save in UO history with 224.
In her first season at Oregon, the Ducks’ recorded 18.69 ground balls per game, which ranked 16th in the nation at the end of the regular season. Four players caused at least ten turnovers, led by Sydney Lawrence’s 18 caused turnovers.
Rainone was also responsible for the emergence of defender Lexie Likins. The junior emerged as a leader on the back line in 2022, recording 29 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers after playing in just seven games over her first two years on campus.
Before moving to Eugene, Rainone spent the three seasons as the goalkeepers coach and defensive coordinator at La Salle after a standout collegiate career at Penn State.
Rainone's units consistently improved during her time with the Explorers. Her goalkeepers raised their save percentage from .447 to .476 in her first season coaching at La Salle and posted a Goals Against Average of 11.93 in the shortened 2020 season. Rainone coached Explorer goalkeeper Molly Loughlin to a historic season in which she set the school record for saves with 170 stops.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Rainone was a standout goalkeeper at Penn State. She earned the starting job as a senior and picked up two Big 10 Defensive Player of the Week honors while leading the Nittany Lions to the National Semifinals. Penn State posted its highest win total in 28 years with Rainone in net. She was named to Big 10 All-Academic team twice.
Rainone also worked with Ultimate Goal Lacrosse, serving as goalie coach and defensive coordinator from 2014 to 2017, and also spent time as a strength and conditioning coach during her time at Penn State.
