Chris Crutchfield
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Coach Chris Crutchfield was named the head coach of Omaha men's basketball on March 18, 2022, after spending the 2021-22 season on Coach Altman's staff.
Crutchfield came to Oregon after spending the 2020-21 season as the head coach at East Central University in Ada, Okla., bringing with him more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience at some of the nation’s top programs. Crutchfield filled the spot on Altman’s staff vacated by Tony Stubblefield, who was named head coach at DePaul.
“We are thrilled to be able to add a coach of Chris’ caliber to our staff, and are excited to welcome him and his family to the University of Oregon,” said Altman. “He has recruited and developed many elite players throughout his career, and his ability to connect and build relationships with student-athletes will be a tremendous asset for our program. Chris is a proven winner with a history of success everywhere he has been, and we look forward to the significant impact he will have here in Eugene.”
Crutchfield spent eight seasons (2011-19) working under Lon Kruger at Oklahoma, first as an assistant coach for five seasons before being elevated to associate head coach in 2016. He joined Arkansas as associate head coach for the 2019-20 season prior to taking the head job at East Central University, where he led the Tigers to a 10-9 record in 2020-21.
“I’m excited and honored to be joining Coach Altman’s staff at the University of Oregon,” said Crutchfield. “Coach Altman and his staff have built a successful and nationally recognized program, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the Ducks’ ongoing success. My family and I can’t wait to get to Eugene and become a part of the University of Oregon.”
Oklahoma compiled a 160-105 (.604) overall record and earned six NCAA Tournament bids in eight seasons with Crutchfield on staff, including a trip to the 2016 Final Four.
Crutchfield was instrumental in the signing and development of Buddy Hield and Trae Young, two of the greatest players ever to wear the Oklahoma uniform. Hield went on to become the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft to New Orleans, while Young went No. 5 overall to Atlanta in the 2018 NBA Draft.
Hield was the consensus national player of the year in 2016 – receiving the honor from the John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Award, Sporting News, and the Oscar Robertson Trophy – and was the Big 12 Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016. Hield, who averaged 25.0 points per game in 2015-16, compiled 2,291 career points with the Sooners and is the program’s all-time leader in made three-pointers (349).
Crutchfield brought Young to Oklahoma as the first five-star recruit of the Kruger era, and Young averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game while setting an NCAA record with 22 assists in a game during his lone season before going to the NBA. Young was a consensus all-American, John R. Wooden Award finalist, and the 2018 Wayman Tisdale freshman of the year.
After Oklahoma, Crutchfield helped lead Arkansas to a 20-12 record in 2019-20. Crutchfield was key in the development of Mason Jones, an Associated Press honorable mention all-American and AP co-SEC player of the year. Jones became the first Razorback ever to lead the SEC in scoring with 22.0 points per game while ranking eighth in the nation, and he led the NCAA with a school-record 233 made free throws. Crutchfield also played a big role in the Razorbacks landing a top-five recruiting class in the nation according to ESPN.
Prior to his move to Oklahoma, Crutchfield was an assistant coach at Oral Roberts (2007-11), TCU (2005-07) and New Mexico State (2001-05). ORU finished in the top three of the Summit League in each of his four seasons, averaging 20 wins per year and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. At New Mexico State, Crutchfield helped the Aggies to a pair of 20-win seasons and a Sun Belt Conference title in 2002 while working under Lou Henson, the school’s all-time wins leader.
Crutchfield broke into coaching at his alma mater, Nebraska-Omaha, first as a graduate assistant and then as an assistant coach. He worked one season at the University of Texas-San Antonio before moving to Tyler Junior College, where he earned his first stint as a head coach after spending two seasons as an assistant. With Crutchfield at the helm from 1999-2001, Tyler boasted a 35-28 record and saw a player graduation rate of 91 percent.
A Hopkinsville, Ky., native, Crutchfield graduated from Nebraska-Omaha in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, and in 1996 with a master's degree in health, physical education and administration.
Crutchfield and his wife, Jodi, have three sons: Derrick, Jalen, and Josh. Jalen and Josh both played for their dad at East Central University in 2020-21, with Jalen leading the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game.
