- Title:
- Volunteer Coach
One of Oregon's most decorated women's hurdlers in recent history, Kayla Mellott returns in 2006-07 as a second-year volunteer coach for the Duck sprints and hurdles crews.
Mellott worked with the talented UO men's sprint, hurdle and relay corps in 2006 and helped them to another record-breaking season. The men's 4x100m relay scored its first ever Pac-10 win at home, then added a third-place regional effort and seventh-place NCAA finish (39.48). The 4x400m relay also added its third straight NCAA outdoor honor (sixth), and added top-three placings in the Pac-10 Championships (second) and West Regional (third). On the individual front, Matt Scherer claimed UO's third Pac-10 title in the 400m (45.19), while Richard Del Rincon finished top-three in the 100m (second, 10.41) and 200m (third, 10.55). Scherer and Eric Mitchum were later tabbed All-Americans in the 400m (fifth, 45.41) and 110m hurdles (fifth, 13.58), while Mitchum also scored another All-America plaque indoors in the 60m hurdles (third, 7.68) to help UO to a sixth-place NCAA indoor team finish.
A decorated 400m hurdler for the Ducks from 2002-05, she was a two-time Pac-10 scorer and still ranks eighth all-time for the Ducks with her personal best of 60.13 that placed her fouth as a senior in the 2005 Pac-10 Championships. She wrapped up her career as an NCAA qualifier in 2005 (61.23) after she placed fifth in the West Regional Championships (60.38) in Eugene. She also competed in the Pac-10 and West Regional Championships as a junior in 2004 (seventh/15th).
As a prep, she was a Washington state championship qualifier all four seasons for Sehome High School in Bellingham, and scored invididually in the 300 hurdles as a senior (seventh, 46.58).
Off the track, she graduated from the University of Oregon after the 2005 spring season with a degree in Human Physiology, and was an Pac-10 All-Academic pick.
Currently, she also works part-time in various sales and product management and ordering areas at the Eugene Running Company.
