EUGENE, Ore. — Senior guard Joseph Young led a 33-1 run to close the first half, putting the Oregon men's basketball team on track for a season-opening 107-65 victory over Coppin State before 5,476 at Matthew Knight Arena on Friday.
How It Happened: The visiting Eagles came out hot, making their first four shots, including three three-pointers for an 11-2 lead that forced an Oregon timeout. Two Young three-pointers from the left wing got the Ducks going, but another trio of Coppin State three-pointers made it 19-14, and the Eagles' seventh three-pointer of the game put them up 22-16. Young then helped Oregon wrest control of momentum, scoring or assisting on six of the next seven baskets during a 13-4 run that put the Ducks in front 29-26. The last basket of that sequence, by Jalil Abdul-Bassit on an assist from Young, kicked off a 33-1 run by the Ducks to close the half, with Coppin going the final 9:45 without a field goal.
The second half was fairly academic, as Coppin State got no closer than 28. The comfortable margin allowed Young to go to the bench with 6:27 to play, a luxury given that the Ducks were scheduled to play again Monday. The Ducks used a 13-2 run to surpass 100 points, capped by a Theo Friedman three-pointer set up by a pretty drive-and-dish from Abdul-Bassit.
Who Stood Out: Young finished the first half with 25 points, six assists and four rebounds, on his way to 32 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the game. With his parents in town and watching from the stands, Young was 6-of-8 from three-point range on the night, including 5-of-7 in the first half. Young led five scorers in double figures, as the Ducks cracked the century mark as a team after doing so in both exhibition games. Junior Elgin Cook added 15 points, Dillon Brooks had 14 in his collegiate debut, fellow freshman Casey Benson scored 13 and a third freshman, Ahmaad Rorie, added 10. Oregon's fourth freshman, forward Jordan Bell scored eight and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Quotable: "We didn't start off very well defensively. They threw in a lot of threes early, and they weren't very well contested. But after that I thought our defensive intensity picked up. I thought we moved the ball pretty well. Guys made some plays." — UO coach Dana Altman
"As the season goes on, guys are going to get more (comfortable on) the court, their play will get better and I won't have to do as much as tonight. But it's the season opener, we've got a lot of new faces, we've got to learn each other and we'll get a lot better." — Young
"It was a step. Obviously we're going to play really good teams here in the next 10 days, so we needed to take a step. I thought we took a little one tonight. We'll have to take a bigger one Monday against Detroit." — Altman
Odds and Ends: Oregon's 107 points were one off the Matthew Knight Arena record. … Benson was a key contributor early in the 33-1 run. He and Dillon Brooks trapped a Coppin State player to force an awkward shot, and on Oregon's next possession Benson hit a three-pointer to put the Ducks up 36-26. Benson had a steal and drew on charge on the Eagles' next two possessions. … Oregon's primary rotation included the eight available scholarship players, with forward Michael Chandler still sidelined by a knee injury. … Walk-on Tim Jensen played one first-half minute, entering at a stoppage that shortly preceded a media timeout. Jensen and Friedman entered the second half with 4:10 to play and the Ducks up 99-56. … Coppin State returned 11 players from the team that won at Oregon State last season, though the Eagles were playing under a new coach. … The game tipped off at 9 p.m., and ended at 10:51 p.m.
Up Next: The Ducks open the four-game, weeklong Progressive Legends Classic against Detroit in Matthew Knight Arena on Monday (8 p.m. PT, ESPNU).
