Ducks Draw Georgetown in Maui Opener
07/19/16 | Men's Basketball
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Oregon will play Georgetown in the first round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Nov. 21 at the Lahaina Civic Center, tournament officials announced Tuesday morning. The Ducks and Hoyas will play at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time (11:30 a.m. HAST) and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
The winner of the Oregon-Georgetown game will play the winner of Wisconsin-Tennessee on Nov. 22, with the losers meeting earlier in the day in the consolation round. The championship game is scheduled for Nov. 23.
Opening round games on the other side of the bracket are Connecticut-Oklahoma State and North Carolina-Chaminade.
Oregon head coach Dana Altman said he is looking forward to taking in part in one of the nation's top preseason tournaments.
"It's an outstanding field and we're excited to be a part of it," said Altman. "There are a lot of teams with experience and a lot of guys back. When I look at the field, that's probably the thing that is the most exciting."
The Maui Invitational will mark the second time in four seasons that the Ducks and Georgetown will play outside of the Continental United States. The two teams opened the 2013-14 season at Camp Humphreys in South Korea, a game won by Oregon 82-75 to give the Ducks a 2-1 series edge.
"I remember the physicality of the game," said Altman. "Georgetown prides itself on being a physical basketball team. A few years ago we did a good job of keeping the floor spread. We scored some points, but we also had a hard time stopping them."
The Ducks and Wisconsin have become familiar foes of late, as the Badgers knocked Oregon out of both the 2014 (85-77) and 2015 (72-65) NCAA Tournaments. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 5-2.On the flip side of that is Oklahoma State, a team the Ducks eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in both 2013 (68-55) and 2015 (79-73). Oregon has a 3-0 lead in that all-time series.
Oregon's last meeting with North Carolina came in the 2008 Maui Classic, a semifinal won by the top-ranked Tar Heels 80-69. UNC is 4-0 all-time against Oregon.
The Ducks' lone meeting with Tennessee came more than 50 years ago at the 1964 Far West Classic in Portland, which was won by the Volunteers 70-63.
Oregon has never played Connecticut or Chaminade.
The 2016 Maui Invitational field has combined for 14 national championships, including six squads that have won at least one NCAA title (Oregon in 1939), and 40 Final Four appearances.
"I think all coaches try to schedule to the level of experience and talent that they have," said Altman. "You don't want to beat them down and overschedule, but we need to challenge this team.
"This tournament will do us a lot of good in that regard. A tournament like this early in the year will really help us."
Last season, both Oregon and North Carolina earned No. 1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels advanced to the national championship game, Oregon reached the Elite Eight and Wisconsin made the Sweet 16.
This will be just the second Maui Invitational appearance for Oregon. The Ducks went 1-2 in the 2008 tournament.
