Freshman Focus: Jessica Yu
07/28/16 | Women's Soccer
GoDucks.com caught up with incoming freshman, Sunnyvale, Calif. native, Jessica Yu about what she's most looking forward to this coming season both on and off the pitch.
How did you get into the sport of soccer?
After moving from Canada to California, my parents received soccer registration forms in the mail for the previous owner. I was four-years-old at the time and they decided to sign me up. I've been playing ever since.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
I ski and snowboard a few times every year and I used to play a little bit of basketball.
Why did you choose the University of Oregon?
I chose the University of Oregon because of the family atmosphere the team and coaches create and the competitive PAC-12 conference I would get to play in. Oregon provides unbelievable support and facilities to its student-athletes and the energy of the school is incredible.
Have you chosen a major or leaning towards a specific area of study?
I have not declared a major yet, but am leaning towards the business area of study. Accounting or finance are possible majors I am interested in exploring.
What do you like to do in your free time when you're not training?
When I'm not training, I like to hang out with family and friends. I also love watching movies, exploring nature and participating in water sports.
Who was your athletic role model growing up?
Growing up, I looked up to players like Christine Sinclair and Lionel Messi.
What's your favorite part about playing soccer?
Being a part of a team is my favorite part about playing soccer. I love celebrating with my teammates after winning and scoring goals.
Do you have any pre-match rituals or superstitions?
I don't have any major pre-match rituals or superstitions. I say a quick prayer and usually just have to make sure I ate the right amount of food and stayed hydrated.
