Allen Collects Another Top-Five Finish For Ducks
08/16/16 | Track and Field
RIO DE JANEIRO – Sophomore Devon Allen garnered another top-five finish for the University of Oregon, while yet another UO undergrad qualified for an Olympic final Tuesday night at the Summer Games in Rio.
Running in his first Olympic final, Allen finished fifth in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.31.
His training partner, former Duck Johnathan Cabral, now running for Canada, was sixth in 13.40.
The two Ducks survived a challenging semifinal earlier on Tuesday just to make the final. Allen and Cabral found themselves in the fastest semifinal heat on Tuesday. Allen placed third in 13.36 and Cabral was fourth in 13.41, as both runners advanced to the final on time.
Also Tuesday, sophomore Deajah Stevens advanced to the final of the women's 200 meters. She finished third in her heat in 22.38, but advanced to Wednesday's final based on time. She becomes the first Duck women's undergrad to make an Olympic final.
Former Duck Jenna Prandini was fourth in her semifinal in 22.55 and did not advance.
Tuesday morning, UO alum Matthew Centrowitz maintained his composure in a fast but tactical 1,500-meter heat that saw the top seven runners all finish within a second of each other. Medal favorite Asbel Kiprop of Kenya, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, won the heat in 3:38.97. Centrowitz was fifth, less than half a second behind in 3:39.31 as the top six finishers advanced automatically to Thursday's semifinal.
The track and field portion of the 2016 Summer Olympics continues with a school-record 17 current and former Ducks in Rio (11 on Team USA, three for Canada, and one each for Australia, Greece and Guatemala). This is the 20th straight Olympiad in which the University of Oregon has been represented, a streak that dates to the 1932 Games in Los Angeles.
GoDucks.com will provide a daily Olympics version of "What to Watch," as well as a recap of Ducks in competition through the remainder of the Games.
What to Watch – Wednesday, August 17
One Duck seeks gold in the women's 200 meters, while the "World's Greatest Athlete" looks to extend his reign for another four years.
Current Duck Deajah Stevens will make a run at a medal in the final of the women's 200 meters at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Stevens is the first undergraduate Duck woman to make an Olympic final.
Among the favorites in the 200 are Elaine Thompson of Jamaica – the 2016 Olympic gold medalist at 100 meters – as well as Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands, who was the 2015 IAAF World champion at 200 meters, and the American champ, Torie Bowie.
Ashton Eaton's quest for an historic gold medal in the decathlon begins Wednesday. Eaton, a five-time NCAA champion for Oregon, is the world record-holder in the decathlon, having scored 9,045 points at the 2015 IAAF World Championships.
He was the 2012 Olympic champion in London and has also won the last two IAAF World championships (2013, 2015). Eaton is looking to become the first American to win back-to-back decathlon titles since Bob Mathias in 1948 and 1952.
Two Ducks will be in action in the qualifying rounds of the men's javelin, Sam Crouser and Cyrus Hostetler. The two must either throw 272-3 (83.00m) to automatically advance to the final, or finish in the top 12 of their qualification round.
Hostetler, the 2016 U.S. champion, threw a personal best of 275-0 (83.83m) earlier this year, which was his third career throw of 272-3 or better. This will be Hostetler's second Olympic Games.
Crouser has bettered 272-3 once in his career, hitting 273-4 (83.33m) at the 2015 Concordia Throws Center. Crouser's uncle Brian Crouser, who is also a UO alum, competed in the Olympic javelin in 1988 and 1992. Crouser will be joined in Rio by his cousin Ryan, who will compete for the United States in the shot put.
