Ducks Shake Off Rust at Indoor Opener
01/13/18 | Track and Field
SEATTLE – Multiple Ducks opened the 2018 season with new personal-bests on Saturday as the Oregon track and field team kicked off its indoor schedule at the UW Preview in the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
How it Happened – Men: The Men of Oregon got strong performances throughout the day from the sprints group. Cameron Stone won his heats in both the 200 and 600 meters, and his time of 21.78 in the 200 was easily a new indoor personal-record (PR). Sophomore Braxton Canady also set a new indoor PR in the 200 meters (22.18) to win his heat, and he was the top collegian in the 60-meter hurdle finals in 7.91 and second overall to Olympic gold medalist Aries Merritt. Freshman Joseph Anderson joined Canady in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and finished sixth (8.15) in a very talented field. Fellow rookie Rieker Daniel was fourth overall (21.85) in the 200 meters and transfer Orwin Emilien won his 600-meter heat.
Cravon Gillespie, a midyear transfer from Mt. SAC, led the Ducks with a third-place finish in the 60-meter finals, crossing in 6.77. Freshman Myles Webb was fifth overall in 6.86, and newcomers Rashad Swank-Jones (6.90) and Spenser Schmidt (6.92) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Redshirt sophomore Max Lydum hit a new PR in the weight throw to lead a 2-3-4 UO finish with Austin Glynn and Austin Tharp, reaching 58-1.25 (17.71m). Junior Ben Milligan matched his PR in the high jump by clearing 7'0.5" (2.15m) to open 2018 with a win.
In the middle distance, sophomore transfer Jaxson Hoey won his 1,000-meter heat in 2:27.59, while Reed Brown (2:21.49) and Mick Stanovsek (2:21.53) finished third and fourth, respectively, in their heat. James West ran the mile in 4:04.69 in his UO track debut, and Jack Yearian (4:09.67) and Jackson Mestler (4:10.64) went 1-2 in their heat.
How it Happened – Women: Freshman Sydnee Walker got her collegiate career off to a strong start, reaching a personal-best 58-7.5 (17.87m) to place second in the weight throw and move into seventh in UO indoor history. Maddie Rabing (57-10.25/17.63m) and Ronna Stone (54-6/16.61m) also reached the finals, finishing fourth and sixth overall, respectively, and Stone qualified for the finals in the shot put.
Redshirt sophomore Ashlyn Hare performed well in her UO debut after missing last season with an injury, finishing first among collegians and second overall in the high jump after clearing 5'7" (1.70m).

Sophomore Hannah Waller ran an indoor personal-best 24.19 for the second-fastest time in the 200 meters, and was joined by six more Ducks – newcomers Briyahna DesRosiers (24.21), Jasmin Reed (24.26), Shae Anderson (24.35), Venessa D'Arpino (24.52), Rachel Vinjamuri (24.69) and Kaylah Robinson (25.11) – in the top 12. Vinjamuri's mark was also a new personal-best. Sophomore Makenzie Dunmore finished as the top Duck in a 60-meter final that featured four Ducks, taking third in 7.41. Senior Ariana Washington (7.46) and freshmen Lauren Rain Williams (7.52) and Jasmin Reed (7.54) filled out the final three spots of the top eight, and Venessa D'Arpino ran a personal-best 7.54 to win her heat in the qualifying round.
In the 60-meter hurdles, reigning Pac-12 champion Alaysha Johnson finished as the top collegian and second overall in 8.27. Robinson (8.41) was fourth in her collegiate debut, and redshirt sophomore Khadejah Jackson (8.74) came in second after advancing through two preliminary rounds. Senior Kylee O'Connor (57.06) and redshirt sophomore Khadejah Jackson (57.80) both won their heats in the 400 meters.
Redshirt senior Sabrina Southerland, a transfer from Georgetown, used a strong final kick in the mile to place second overall in a new PR 4:40.40, and junior Jessica Hull was right behind in 4:41.27. Lilli Burdon was fifth overall in the 1,000 meters in 2:45.75 in her first race since a terrific cross country season.
What it Means: With many student-athletes competing in events other than their specialties, the UW Preview served as a good rust-buster for them to get comfortable being back on the track. The Ducks will now turn their attention more towards results and qualifying marks as they get set for a big meet in New York at the historic Armory Track and Field Center.
Up Next: Oregon will have next weekend off from competition before traveling to New York for the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge (Jan. 26-27).
