Ducks Shine in Women's Sprints, Men's Mile on Saturday
02/10/18 | Track and Field
The sprints group for the Women of Oregon enjoyed another very productive day at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, and the Men of Oregon placed four runners under 4 minutes in the mile at the Husky Classic in Seattle as the Oregon track and field program wrapped up its split-squad weekend on Saturday.
The Ducks were able to move into NCAA qualifying position in a number of different events across both meets over the weekend, and will now get ready for postseason action with the MPSF Championships up next on the schedule (Feb. 23-24).
How it Happened – Don Kirby: Sophomores Makenzie Dunmore and Hannah Waller both ran personal-bests and moved themselves into NCAA qualifying position, with Dunmore winning the 60 meters in 7.18 and Waller taking the 400 meters in 52.44. Both of those marks rank sixth in the NCAA this season, and Waller's time is third all-time at Oregon while Dunmore's mark is the sixth-best at UO.
Freshman Lauren Rain Williams, who dazzled in the 200 meters on Friday, also ran a personal-best in the 60 meters in 7.36, and senior Ariana Washington crossed in 7.38. Junior Briyahna DesRosiers was second to Waller in the 400 meters in a PR 52.72, good for fourth-best in UO indoor history, and both Shae Anderson (53.41) and Venessa D'Arpino (54.00) also ran personal-bests.
In the final event of the day, DesRosiers, Dunmore and Waller teamed up with Shae Anderson to win the 4x400 relay in 3:30.18, the second-best mark in the nation this season and third-best all-time at Oregon.
Alaysha Johnson pulled out another win for the Women of Oregon, taking the 60-meter hurdles in 8.13, and freshman Kaylah Robinson finished in a PR 8.33.
In the men's sprints, junior Cravon Gillespie won the 60 meters in 6.68, and both Cameron Stone (46.37) and Orwin Emilien (47.08) ran personal-bests in the 400 meters. Stone's time ranks third in Oregon indoor history, and will put him in the mix for NCAA qualifying. Freshman Joseph Anderson took third in the 60-meter hurdle finals, running the ninth-best time in UO history (7.93).
After winning the long jump on Friday night, junior transfer Tristan James finished second in the triple jump Saturday with a top leap of 51-0 (15.55m) to cap a terrific weekend in Albuquerque. Junior Chaquinn Cook improved her school record in the triple jump with a mark of 43-0 (13.11m) to win the event.
How it Happened – Husky Classic: While their teammates impressed in Albuquerque, a number of other Ducks performed well in Seattle at the Dempsey Indoor Facility, headlined by tremendous showings in both the men's mile and the women's 3,000 meters.
The Men of Oregon placed four runners under the 4-minute mark in the mile for the second meet in a row, led by a 1-2 finish from senior Sam Prakel (3:56.89) and freshman Reed Brown (3:57.23). Mick Stanovsek was sixth in 3:58.23, and senior Blakey Haney broke 4 minutes for the first time this season in 3:59.01. Prakel and Brown both put themselves in NCAA qualifying position with new personal-bests while moving into third and fourth, respectively, on the UO indoor mile list. Sophomore transfer Jaxson Hoey also performed well, running a 15-second PR in 4:04.04.
Jessica Hull and Lilli Burdon both ran huge PRs in the women's 3,000 meters, joining former Duck great Jordan Hasay as the only Ducks to ever break 9 minutes. Hull was second overall in 8:58.50 and Burdon was right behind in 8:59.18 as both women secured NCAA top-10 marks.
In the men's 3,000 meters, junior transfer James West ran a seven-second PR in 7:51.23, and freshman Cooper Teare bested his personal-best by more than 20 seconds in 7:53.66. All four of Oregon's marks in the 3,000 meters should hold up for NCAA qualifying.
Senior Sabrina Southerland strengthened her NCAA standing in the women's mile with a fourth-place finish in a PR 4:36.30, and junior Susan Ejore ran a career-best 4:38.65 to place seventh. Southerland's time ranks eighth all-time at UO. Sophomore transfer Amanda Gehrich also posted a new PR (4:47.18).
In the short sprints in Seattle, freshman Rieker Daniel ran a personal-best 6.85 in the 60 meters and redshirt sophomore Khadejah Jackson posted a career-best 8.62 in the 60-meter hurdles. Jackson's time ties for 10th in Oregon history.
Freshman Sydnee Walker placed eighth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 59-5 (18.11m), and Maddie Rabing was 12th at 58-1.25 (17.71m).
What it Means: The Ducks entered the weekend hoping to strengthen their standing across the board for the NCAA Indoor Championships, and they seemed to accomplish that goal with many marks that moved into qualifying position. The Men and Women of Oregon will now have one final chance at the MPSF Championships to earn qualifying marks for the national indoor meet in College Station, Texas (March 9-10).
Notable: For NCAA qualifying purposes, 0.02 will be added to 60-meter hurdles times, 0.11 will be added to all 400-meter times and 0.44 will be tacked on to the 4x400 relay times … Braxton Canady won his 60-meter hurdle semifinal heat in 7.93 but false started in the finals.
Up Next: The Ducks will compete for conference titles at the MPSF Championships in Seattle on Feb. 23-24.
