CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Behind a two-hit shutout by Miranda Elish, the No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team blanked No. 7 LSU, 4-0, on Sunday morning at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Ducks (11-3) improved to 2-2 this weekend at the Mary Nutter will all four games against top-20 opponents. The Ducks have one more game today before heading back home.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless first, the Ducks jumped out to an early lead in the second. After Gwen Svekis drew a leadoff walk, DJ Sanders mashed her seventh homer run of the season to left, a two-run blast that put the Ducks up, 2-0.
Oregon added two more runs in the third. Alexis Mack started the inning with a single but a two-out LSU error kept the inning alive and allowed Shannon Rhodes to get on base. Rhodes stole second and Svekis delivered with a two-run single to left to make it a 4-0 lead for Oregon.
The Ducks had a chance to extend their lead in the fifth when Jenna Lilley drew a leadoff walk and, with one out, Rhodes was hit by a pitch. But a strikeout and groundout ended the scoring threat.
With a 4-0 lead, Rhodes made a nice defensive play for the first out in the bottom of the seventh. LSU lined a ball to the wall in right center, but Rhodes fielded it quickly and gunned down the runner at second pushing for a double. Elish picked up her 10th strikeout for the second out of the seventh before getting a groundout to end it.
IN THE CIRCLE: Miranda Elish started the game for the Ducks. After working around a walk in the first and a single in the second, the sophomore struck out the side in the third. She also posted a 1-2-3 fourth and fifth inning. Between a leadoff single in the second and a two-out walk in the sixth, Elish had retired 14 straight batters. Elish ended the game with 10 strikeouts plus two hits and two walks allowed.
AT THE PLATE: The Ducks tallied just three hits against LSU ace Carly Hoover, who entered the game with a 6-0 record and a 0.53 ERA. Oregon made them count though, scoring four runs. Sanders hit her seventh homer of the season to drive in two runs and Svekis drove in two more on a two-out single.
UP NEXT: Oregon wraps up the Mary Nutter Classic later today against San Jose State.
