EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team held firm against the incoming waves, sweeping Pepperdine, 4-0, Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: On an unexpected clear day in February, the Ducks (4-2) took on Pepperdine, playing on UO's outdoor courts for the first time this season.
Oregon established their presence early in doubles play as Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts recorded a dominant 6-1 victory over Dennis Uspensky and Nicholas Baez at the No. 1 position.
Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry secured the doubles point from the No. 3 spot picking up their 10th straight win, fifth in dual play, with a 6-2 victory.
Stevens continued his stellar play at the No. 2 singles position. The senior defeated Pepperdine's Yusef Khamis 6-3, 6-3 to give Oregon a 2-0 lead.
Besides the weather, fans were also treated to quite the ranked match at the No. 1 spot as No. 6 Thomas Laurent squared off against No. 100 Dennis Uspensky. After winning the opening set, Laurent rallied from behind to win the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Riki Oshima clinched the win for the Ducks at the No. 5 position, downing Max Mendelsohn, 6-4, 6-3.
Notable: The 4-0 victory marks the fourth match this season where the Ducks have not conceded a point ... Simon Stevens and Riki Oshima both snapped two-match singles losing streaks with their wins today … Following his win, Thomas Laurent improves to 8-2 on the year against nationally ranked opponents … The doubles pairs of Stevens and Ty Gentry along with Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts each have five wins on the season to lead the Ducks.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On playing outdoors in February…
"I thought we did great playing in really slow conditions, it certainly wasn't warm out here. The ball was not traveling that fast. I think the guys responded very well, and grinded out the conditions and had a very convincing 4-0 victory."
Up Next: The Ducks will return to the courts this Friday, Feb. 9, to host Wisconsin at 4 p.m. PT.
