Ducks' Season Ends In NIT Second Round Loss At Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Oregon men's basketball team ran into a red-hot Marquette team, and fell 101-92 Sunday at the Al McGuire Center in the second round of the NIT. The Ducks' season comes to an end at 22-13.

How It Happened: Offensively, Oregon had one of its better nights of the season, scoring 92 points and shooting 53.7 percent from the field (29-of-54). But Marquette (21-13) was better, hitting 57.6 percent (34-of-59). Andrew Rowsey led the Golden Eagles with 29 points.

Marquette took advantage of the Ducks' turnovers, scoring 30 points off Oregon mistakes. Eight of those turnovers came in the first half, as the Ducks fell into a hole they could never recover from.

"We buried ourselves with the turnovers and they got hot from three," said Oregon coach Dana Altman.

After a pair of MiKyle McIntosh free throws cut Marquette's lead to 12-11 with 5:03 to play, the Golden Eagles closed the period on an 18-8 run to take a 30-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. Payton Pritchard led the Ducks with seven points in the opening frame.

The Golden Eagles remained hot in the second quarter and took a 58-38 lead into the break. It was the most points allowed by the Ducks in a half this season. Marquette scored 30 points on three pointers in the first half, hitting 10-of-19. Rowsey had 22 points in the half for the Golden Eagles.

"We knew it would come down to three-pointers and they made a lot of tough ones," said McIntosh, who led Oregon with 25 points.

After the teams played an even third quarter, the Ducks went on an 18-4 run midway through the fourth quarter to cut Marquette's lead to 11, but the teams traded buckets the rest of the way before Pritchard's layup at the buzzer made the final margin nine points.

Who Stood Out: McIntosh had career highs in free throws made (15) and attempted (18). White scored a career-high 19, while Pritchard added 16 and Victory Bailey Jr. had 11.

What It Means: Oregon's season comes an end at 23-13. The 2017-18 season marked Oregon's eighth-straight 20-win season, a school record, and eighth straight postseason appearance. The Ducks are one of just 15 teams with an active streak of eight or more 20-win seasons.

Notable: Freshman Kenny Wooten set the school season record for field goal percentage at 68.1 percent. Senior Elijah Brown set the school season record for free throw percentage at .930. Pritchard had three assists to tie for sixth on the UO single-season list with 171.
